leaders are hiding out. and his reason for running. what president biden says is driving his re-election bid. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the fbi's warning the u.s. is facing an unprecedented level of terror threats this holiday season as the israel-hamas war rages half a world away. an intelligence report says the most likely primary targets include churches, synagogues, and members of the jewish community. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us from new york with details on this. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. risk of terrorist activity is always heightened around the holidays, but the director of the fbi says this is different. the u.s. is facing the greatest threat of attack in years with some foreign terrorist groups exploiting the war in the middle east and openly calling for strikes against americans. groups like al qaeda and

i.s.i.s. will likely use the israel-hamas war to increase calls for violence in the u.s. this holiday season. that's according to a new joint bulletin from the departments of justice and homeland security. >> all the lights were blinking red before 9/11. would you say that there's multiple blinking red lights out there? >> i see blinking lights everywhere i turn. >> reporter: fbi director christopher wray warned senators on capitol hill tuesday that terrorists may try to exploit the u.s. southern border and says the bureau is working to identify and disrupt potential attacks. >> i've never seen a time where all the threats, or so many of the threats, are all elevated all at exactly the same time. >> reporter: last week the fbi and nevada authorities arrested a 16-year-old who allegedly threatened to attack las vegas in the name of i.s.i.s. >> we charged the suspect with multiple felonies to include terroristic threats. >> reporter: wray also pressed

senators to reauthorize a program that allows the u.s. government to collect without a warrant the communications of targeted foreigners outside the u.s. but lawmakers on both sides have criticized the program following revelations that fbi analysts improperly searched the database for information about people tied to the january 6th capitol riot and racial justice protests in 2020. >> we have absolutely no reason to trust you because you haven't behaved in a manner that's trustworthy. >> reporter: the program is set to expire at the end of the year. that surveillance program can also capture communications of american citizens and others in the u.s., but only when they're in contact with targeted foreigners. as of now, though, the top concern is over lone perpetrators who may be inspired by the war in israel and gaza. anne-marie? >> thank you so much. turning now to the israel-hamas war.

israeli ground forces rolled into the heart of southern gaza's largest city, khan younis, calling it the most intense day since the beginning of the ground operation. this as more disturbing details are coming to light about the october 7th atrocities. israeli authorities releasing video of witness accounts saying they have collected hundreds of testimonies of sexual violence they say hamas committed. meanwhile, a heartwarming video of one of the younger hostages. cl classmates greeting 5-year-old emilia aloni with hugs on her first day back at school. cbs' chris livesay has the latest from jerusalem. >> reporter: southern gaza, once relatively safer than the rest of the strip no longer. paramedics flee nearby tank fire, saving who they can along the way. israeli forces say they are now in the heart of khan younis, a

city they believe to host many hamas leaders, as well as hundreds of thousands of palestinians now left with vanishing options for safety. rushed to the hospital, these sisters breathe fresh air for the first time after being plcked from beneath the rubble after four days. "i want my mom," says lana abu safi. "ouch, my arm." rescuers hurry to save this trapped boy, as well, but can only come up with his body. with the war in its 60th day, israelis are shouting that some of their children are trapped underground, as well. more than 130 hostages are still held captive in hamas' tunnels and around gaza including eight americans like 23-year-old hersh goldberg polin. with the cease-fire now in shambles, his parents fear what's next. what does that do to your hope for your son? >> we're of course worried not

just about him. if hersh somehow, somewhere can hear this, just know we love you. stay strong. survive. we're coming. >> reporter: the government spoke with the hostages' families who are demanding israel resume negotiations immediately. hersh's father told cbs news -- >> i don't know that the cabinet needed to have a flame lit under them to get the hostages out. if they did, it happens today. >> reporter: israelis are also lighting a flame under the international community after women's advocates flooded the u.n. over accusations that hamas has used rape as a weapon of war. >> where the hell are you? i expect all civilized leaders, governments, nations to speak up against this atrocity. >> reporter: chris livesay, cbs news. turning to the weather now, there are more flood alerts this morning across parts of washington state, oregon, and northern idaho. an atmospheric river is bringing heavy rain, flooding, and unusually warm temperatures to

the pacific northwest. the coast guard rescued several people trapped by floodwaters yesterday in washington state. a raging river flooded roads and homes and cut off areas north of seattle. the storm will continue to impact the region before moving across the country. it's expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and possible snow to the central and eastern president biden says he's not sure he'd be running for re-election if former president donald trump was not running, as well. mr. biden made the comments yesterday during a campaign fundraising event in boston. he said american democracy is at stake in 2024, and trump and his allies are out to destroy democratic institutions. last night during a fox news town hall in iowa, trump was asked if he would abuse his power to seek revenge if he wins the election. trump said he will not become a dictator except on, quote, day one. trump said he'd use his

presidential powers to close the southern border and expand oil drilling. after trump made the comments, the biden campaign issued a statement, it read, "donald trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he's re-elected, and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. americans should believe him." rising anti-semitism on college campuses took center stage on capitol hill. a house committee grilling three university presidents on their response to tensions that erupted at their schools following the october 7th attacks. skyler henry reports from washington. >> reporter: presidents of several of the most prestigious universities were asked to explain an alarming outbreak of anti-semitism on campus. >> today, each of you will have a chance to answer to and atone for the many specific instances of vitriolic hate-filled anti-semitism on your respective campuses. >> we are deeply committed to protecting free expression, even of views that we find

objectionable and outrageous and offensive. >> reporter: during heated questioning by new york republican elise stafanik, harvard university professor dr. claudine gay cited free expression and said the school consistently enforces its rules of conduct. >> does that speech not call for the genocide of jews and the elimination of israel? you testified that you understand that is the definition of interfada. >> reporter: the presidents of the university of pennsylvania and mit also testified about anti-semitism on their campuses. separately house speaker mike johnson hosted jewish college students who spoke out about what they've encountered at their schools. >> i was forced to leave my study group for my doctoral exams halfway through the semester because my group members told me that the people at the nova music festival deserved to die because they were partying on stolen land. >> at nyu, i hear calls to gas the jews and am told hitler was right. >> i along with most of campus sought refuge in our rooms.

"the washington post" reports the virginia man whose house exploded during a standoff with police had a history of rambling lawsuits. investigators say james yoo was inside his arlington home monday night and is presumed dead. police were attempting to execute a search warrant after they say he shot flares across the neighborhood. court records reveal yoo had filed lawsuits that were dismissed, accusing relatives, judges, lawyers, and doctors of conspiring to violate his rights. "the anchorage daily news" says charges were reduced for the alaska airlines pilot accused of attempting to cut the engines. joseph emerson was originally charged with 83 counts of attempted murder, one for every person on board. on monday, a grand jury indicted him on 83 misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person, and one count of

never reaching the end ♪ british rocker denny laine has died. he was a founder of the moody blues and co-founded "wings" with paul mccartney. he was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame five years ago, and his wife posted on line that his cause of death was lung disease. denny laine was 79. the woman accusing jonathan majors of assault took the stand yesterday. grace jabbari claims majors, her then-boyfriend, assaulted her in the back of an suv in march. in tearful testimony she said he had a violent temper that he was increasingly unable to control. majors has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges. actor jamie foxx is speaking out about his health scare in his first public appearance. >> i wouldn't wish what i went through on -- on my worst enemy
