college campus. a gunman goes on a shooting rampage at unlv. three victims killed. the fourth faceoff. four republican presidential candidates go head to head targeting each other instead of the frontrunner who was absent from the stage. and zeroing in. fighting intensifies across gaza as israeli troops surround the home of the hamas leader believed to have orchestrated the october 7th attacks. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the tragedy in las vegas. another mass shooting at another school. this time at unlv. here's what we know -- three people are killed, a fourth critically wounded. the gunman, according to law enforcement sources, a former college professor who is also dead. what we don't know is why. cbs' danya bacchus joins us from las vegas with the latest on this investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. law enforcement continues to surround unlv's campus trying to piece together a motive as this

college community grapples with what happened here. in a scene that's become all-too familiar in the u.s., s.w.a.t. teams moved in to confront an active shooter at a las vegas campus wednesday afternoon. students with their hand raised were ushered to safety after police say the gunman killed several people, opening fire in the student union and the business school building. he died in a shootout with two university detectives outside. >> if it hadn't been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken. >> reporter: a law enforcement official tells the "associated press" the gunman was a professor who tried unsuccessfully to get a job at the university of nevada las vegas. miles thomas is a unlv teacher who sheltered in place with students as shots rang out. >> sitting there quietly and heard three gunshots, pop, pop, pop. i was like, oh, my god. there was a second when -- i

thought -- i was going to -- i thought that was it, you know. >> reporter: the unlv campus is about two miles from the las vegas strip and specifically the mandalay bay resort which is the site of the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. many unlv students describe the panic they felt knowing an active shooter was nearby. >> we had to close the door and barricade six tables up. i'm still scared out of my mind. >> trying to keep alert and comfort students. there was a lot of students that were crying. >> reporter: police have not yet identified the gunman, the victims, or a possible motive. flags on campus are flying at half staff, and classes will be canceled for the rest of the week. anne-marie? >> all right. danya bacchus in las vegas. thank you so much. well, four republican presidential hopefuls battled it out on the debate stage last night in tuscaloosa, alabama. instead of going after the frontrunner who was absent again, they went after each other with nikki haley taking

most of the hits. cbs' naomi ruchim is here to break it down for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. with nikki haley gaining recent traction among the shrinking field of candidates, her opponents were quick to come after her during the debate last night. and with the help of one defender on stage, haley fought to fend off the constant attacks. it was a night of blows and comebacks for the smallest field yet of gop presidential hopefuls. nikki haley took most of the heat with entrepreneur vivek ramaswamy setting his sights on the former u.s. ambassador. >> you were bankrupt when you left the u.n. after you left the u.n., you became a military contractor, and now you're a multimillionaire. that math does not add up. it adds up to the fact that you are corrupt. >> reporter: haley, whose poll numbers are on the rise and has welcomed new high-profile endorsements, appeared to take the shots in stride. >> i love all the attention, fellas. thank you for that.

>> reporter: former new jersey governor chris christie came to haley's defense, delivering one of the most memorable jabs of the night at ramaswamy. >> fourth debate that you would be voted in the first 20 minutes as the most obnoxious blowhard in america. so shut up. >> reporter: former president donald trump skipped the debate once again, instead holding a fundraiser in florida. but the clear frontrunner's bid for 2024 was a hot topic as florida governor ron desantis walked a fine line on whether trump is fit to be president for another term. >> we have an opportunity to nominate someone and elect someone for two terms. we should not nominate somebody who -- who's almost 80 years old. >> reporter: scuffles among the four candidates still shooting for second place marked the final debate before the iowa caucuses next month. the latest cbs news poll from early november showed trump winning 61% of likely gop primary voters nationwide.

more than any other candidate and all of them combined. desantis came in at a distant second at 18%. anne-marie? >> all right. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. turning now to the war in gaza. israel is closing in on the man that they say is the mastermind of the october 7th attacks. the idf says troops have surrounded the home of yahya sinwar, hamas' gaza chief, who they believe is hiding underground. the u.n. secretary general invoked a rare article urging the security council to act now to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in the besieged territory. in tel aviv there's a special memorial to victims killed at the nova music festival. the festival producers re-created the venue saying that they want the whole world to see the atrocities that happened there. cbs' chris livesay has the latest from jerusalem. >> reporter: from the north to the south in khan younis, house-to-house fighting with the israeli military hunting down hamas fighters.

israeli forces are hammering targets behind me. they say they're now operating across the gaza strip leaving vanishing options for hamas fighters to flee but also for civilians. some 600,000 people have been told to evacuate, according to the united nations human rights chief who says life in southern gaza has become apocalyptic. sammer soukar displaced for the fifth time washes her baby just ten days old. what did she do to deserve being in a tent? i named her innocence because she didn't do anything to deserve this. >> reporter: at a khan younis hospital, saba magnam desperately searches for her father. in a moment, tears of sorrow turn to rare tears of joy. rarer still since the collapse of the seven-day cease-fire when more than 100 hostages were freed from hamas captivity like

"i was in a hiding place that was shelled, and an israeli helicopter shot at us on the way to gaza." chris livesay, cbs news, tel aviv. there are growing calls for the presidents of harvard, mit, and the university of pennsylvania to resign after their controversial answers tuesday during a congressional hearing on rising campus anti-semitism. >> does calling for the genocide

of jews violate penn's rules or code of conduct? yes or no? >> if the speech turns into conduct it can be harassment. it can be depending on the context. >> during the hearing the three college leaders said that they were appalled by anti-semitism and taking steps to combat it. but when asked if students called -- calling for the genocide of jews should be disciplined, they said it depended on the context, it as you heard. yesterday they tried to clarify those comments. the president of penn, elizabeth magill, issued a video statement. >> in my view it would be harassment or intimidation. penn must initiate a serious and careful look at our policies. >> and harvard president claudine gay released a statement saying "those who talent our jewish students will be held accountable." amid the rise in anti-semitism the eight-day jewish holiday of hanukkah takes a special significance this year. the world's largest menorah in

"the austin american statesman" reports a texas man is under arrest after allegedly going on a shooting rampage that killed six people including a mother walking her baby. shane james has been charged with capital murder. authorities say he has a history of mental health problems. he allegedly killed his parents at their home in the san antonio area tuesday. four more people were found dead later in austin. two police officers and a cyclist were also wounded. james was arrested after crashing his car during a police chase. "the hill" says the air force grounded the entire fleet of ospreys after a crash off the coast of japan killed eight service members. the navy and marine corps also grounded its ospreys. it came after a preliminary investigation into last week's crash indicated that there was a potential material failure. the aircraft has been involved in multiple deadly accidents. and "the las vegas sun" says six republicans are charge ed with falsely certifying donald trump as the 2020 election in nevada.

nasdaq 83, and the s&p 500 fell 17 points. some disturbing allegations in a new lawsuit against meta, the parent company of facebook and instagram. the state of new mexico alleges the sites steer minors toward explicit content and enable child predators to find and conduct children. new mexico's ag says the claims come after an investigation using test accounts that feature photos generated by a.i. in a statement, meta says it has a range of protections in place. some interesting developments in that lead scare related to cinnamon apple sauce. more than 60 kids in 27 states got sick possibly linked to recalled products. the fda says it's likely that the lead was in the cinnamon itself. they've got a team collecting samples from the plant in ecuador to that shipped the applesauce. authorities found cinnamon from the supplier negasmart had lead levels above what's allowed in the country according to the fda.
