as that war stretches on, the fbi now warning terror groups will likely use it to call for violence and the u.s. over the holidays and that has jewish and muslim places of worship in the bay area on high alert. joining me like right now to talk about this is a rabbi from a temple in oakland. today marks two days since the attack on israel. my first question is, how are you doing and how is your congregation doing at this time? >> thank you. you are kind to ask. there are a lot of folks that are still in pain, folks that are worried and concerned about the families that are in israel and a lot of folks worried about everyone living in gaza and a lot of folks in the crossfire. >> while the fbi in the chp in the bay area, what are you the morning and is your temple or do you know of any other temples taking measures? >> every single temple i know is taking higher security

measures. we all have since october 8. it is often the case that things are happening in israel or the middle east that they were repercussions and ripples and folks who want to carry out their frustrations and things on the local jewish community or local muslim community as well. we have been on high alert in terms of our own security and our security measures. >> as we enter the first day of hanukkah which is at sundown, what are your hopes and what are your thoughts? >> i think that i have been proud of my community and seeing the other folks in the jewish community, it really feels like people want to stand up and be proud of who we are and what we stand for. this is a time where we talk about finding light. we keep moving on in a positive way, creating positive relationships with other folks in other communities and recognizing that things can get better, we can work to make things better.
3:05 pm
>> we talked about positive communications with other people and other communities. what have you done to reach out to other side or to help educate people about what is happening? >> we have tried a lot to talk with a lot of different organizations , whether that is the school board and city council or those kinds of things. we have been in conversation with a lot of folks to understand what happens and more important how it affects the people here. when we do things like pass resolutions and do these protests and things, they don't have an effect on what is happening in the middle east but they have a very strong affect here in the guiding of people here . our work is to recognize that those of us in the bay area, certainly in oakland, we are here together. this is our community and one of the things we love about it is the fact that it is so diverse and that we need to make sure that when we are expressing our feelings and expressing our thoughts, we are sensitive to who is here in our community with us. in order to make sure that these are not lasting difficult feelings and

know any mosques or temples that are preparing just in case something happens? >> thank you so much for having me. we live in an environment where security concerns are every day for us but since october 7, we have seen over 170% increase in complaints of experiences of islamophobia including violent hate crimes in the bay area and an assault in monterey, hit and run in stanford and more. mosques have been preparing. i recalled sitting in meetings in october with mosques as this all began. they had hired security. they were reviewing their video cameras. they were thinking about which doors need to stay opened and closed at different times. with an exponential increase in complaints of islamophobia across the country, prevention is necessary. mosques are doing what is important to protect

their congregants. >> this war is weighing heavy on a lot of people and a lot of different communities. how are you doing and how are your family, your friends and your community doing? >> just a couple of hours ago, i saw the news that one of my reporters who i follow had been killed by israeli forces. every morning i wake up and i check my friends who have family here. did your family make it through the night? there are no words to describe what it is like to watch a genocide happening live on our phones and on our televisions and to know what is happening without any accountability. we are all funding the murder of women, children, men of all ages and it is beyond belief that it continues this long. >> today marks two months since that war began. the latest estimates say 80% -- i believe

that is 1.9 million people in gaza -- have been displaced by the fighting. that number is likely to rise. you had mentioned this already but what are you hearing from community members who may have family members stuck in gaza? >> we are between a rock and a hard place. we want to help those people get out and get to safety but we also know that that is exactly what the israeli government wants, to take over the land in gaza. every day we watch as they hold onto life and faith that the world will stop this. but, it continues. so too will our advocacy, so too will our cries for our government cease-fire now. >> you had mentioned a simple question that a lot of people in the community are asking yourself and even on the other side too. are you doing? how important is that question? >> it is one that we ask because we care about each other but every time i asked kid or have been asked, we struggle for the answer. most of us in my community are

waking up and watching the news, going to sleep watching the news and offering condolences on a regular basis to people we know or friends of friends, reporters that we are following online. how are we? how can we all be anything but heartbroken as we watch babies being burned alive by howard tax funded weapons? >> i know it is a very difficult conversation. i thank you for taking the time to share in your thoughts and information on the war. thank you very much. you can stay up-to-date with everything happening in gaza and the ripple effects happening here in the bay area. it affects a lot of people and a lot of communities that we call our neighbors. right here on our website, www.kpix.com , streaming on cbs news bay area. coming up next, san francisco's fbi is looking for several russian hackers they say were targeting a number of national security entities. we will let you know which ones and its ties -- has its ties to
