darkness. this year things feel different. they look different, too this union square where extra police and ambassadorred stood guard over the bill gram menorah lighting. our andrea nakono was there and spoke to people who say this year it is more important than any. >> reporter: families gathered. there was a leaf police presence here to make sure everyone stayed safe and many families were able to find joy during what has been an incredibly tough year. >> for this family, this lighting ceremony is a yearly tradition. it is a time for relatives and friends to celebrate hanukkah together. this year, a cousin from israel was able to join them. for this family it is first time her whole family has not been together at this type of the year. >> it was pretty hard because like i have family and friends there.

>> reporter: coming to the u.s. with her mother but for now her dad is still in israel. she says her family had been thinking about moving to the u.s. but the plans were accelerated after the october 7th attack. while she can not be with her dad this year she is constantly in touch with him. >> i know they are safe and they are happy as well. >> reporter: there was a heavy police presence around union square during the lighting ceremony. many said they did not have safety concerns and just wanted to focus on celebrations. those of jewish faith will light a candle for eight straight days. for some, each thrapple is a symbol of hope and peace. >> to have hope. and god is always with us. especially in this crazy time in israel. yeah. >> united the jewish people together during the difficult times it is very important that we unite. god saves us from all of this. >> reporter: and she not only prays for peace but hopes that her family will be reunited next year. >> everything is going to get

better. >> reporter: the event here at union square will be an eight day event until all of the candles are lit on the menorah. the war between israel and hamas entered the third month. hamas is still holding 130 hostages while hundreds of thousands of palestinians lack essentials like food, water, power, a safe place to go. the u.n. estimates nearly 80% of gaza's population have fled their homes since fighting began. it is important to provide humanitarian assistance to palestinian civilians who are in harm's way in gaza through no fault of their own. >> back here in the bay area we met a palestinian christian who told kenny choi it does not feel right to celebrate this year. >> reporter: this family were visiting family on the west

bank on october 7th and realized they had to leave quickly. >> at that point they told them they are not letting them through. >> reporter: they drove east to the jordan border knowing it would be safer but knew her parents without u.s. pass ports would face a different situation. >> i just wanted my kids safety. so, i take them, of course, without thinking twice. i will cross. but then also that meant to say, good-bye to my parents. >> reporter: she feared her parents would return to a palestinian city that could become a war zone overnight like gaza. >> and he said good-bye to me and hugged all of us and they turned back and went back. >> reporter: with israel air strikes escalating, she, like so many others, tries to get updates on loved ones. she is christian but not decorating her trees in the courtyard this year. a cousin leaves a message

sharing how palestinians are not celebrating christmas. lights and decorations are absent. a baby jesus lies in rubble at a church in bethlehem. >> with occupation, with destruction, with the bebardment of children. why the world is celebrating our children are under the word's problem.. >> a lot of kids, women, men, are just being massacred and then we are celebrating, you know, it is not, it is not right. it is not right. >> reporter: her family has already lost friends and loved ones. >> the idea that they were hiding in the church, thinking it is safe. then they all, they are all gone. it is a dad and a few of his kids and a sister and brother. it is, it is sad. >> reporter: at a time of celebration around the world, she is trying to cling to hope. >> where do they go? where do they go? >> reporter: even when so many of her people are facing death

and utter darkness. >> she eventually reunited with her parents who remain in jordan. tonight we learned that the boyfriend of a san francisco tech worker was just arrested for her murder. 27-year-old kimberly wong was found dead in her apartment last thursday during a well being check the police arrested 29-year-old scott fisher in concord this morning. friends of wong tell kpix she and fisher dated for several years, wong worked as a product designer at plaid. the police are not saying anything tonight about a possible motive. supervisor, who represents the area, tweeted out she was grateful an arrest was made in the case and that we must all take a stand against domestic violence. more school violence in santa rosa to tell you about. the police say a middle school campus went into lockdown after a student pulled out a knife during a class room fight. it happened this morning at

herbert slater middle school. the fight spilled into the hallway and the student who was initially attacked brandished a kitchen knife and tried to lunge at the two other teens. the police say two 13-year-old boys walked into a class room and started punching another 13-year-old student. the teacher managed to stop all of this and all three students were arrested. chilling details tonight in the wake of yesterday's mass shooting at unlv. the police say the gunman that killed three people and wounded a fourth had specific victims in mind. >> the suspect had a list of people he was seeking on the university campus. as well as faculty from the eastern carolina university. >> but no one on the 67-year-old's target list was hit. the police shot and killed the former professor after a 10-minute rampage at the business school at unlv. the police say he mailed letters to two dozen staffers across the country and some of them had

white powder inside. we know it turned out to be harmless. the gunman had been denied several professor jobs including one at unlv. two business school professors were killed in the shooting. they have not publicly named the third victim that died but no students were shot. the pilot that tried to shutdown a plane while on its flight to sfo is out of jail. he was released before his trial. he can not come within 30 feet of a plane, needs to seek mental health treatment and stay away from drugs and alcohol. he was reunited with his wife today and his attorney said they will be coming back to california. his wife says their children are excited that he is returning home but that this whole case is putting a spotlight on a much larger issue. >> i am saddened that this

situation had to happen to my husband and to these people that it affected. but i know that this has created a movement, a momentum to help thousands of other pilots and people in mental health situations. >> emerson was off duty at the time but riding in the cockpit of the flight he was accused of trying to sabotage. he previously faced attempted murder charges. that was reduced to reckless endangerment. a driver crashes through the crowd at a california christmas parade. how a food truck parked in just the right spot may have saved people's lives. and this bay area business might as well not of bothered with putting all of the bars up. the back to back break ins that cleared them out ahead of the holidays. teens swarm around a car trying to lift it off of the ground. this was no prank. it was a matter of life and death . the past couple of days

. a christmas parade in bakersfield took a violent turn when a pick up truck went through the route as it was about to start. three people hurt, one critically. the driver stepped on the gas before going into the crowd. luckily a food truck that was parked there for the parade was in his way. >> it sucks. it is our primary income but it was not, trucks can be replaced. >> had he not hit my truck he would of hit all of those little kids. >> witnesses say the driver tried to take off after the crash but his truck would not move. he is under arrest tonight on suspicion of dui. a union city sneaker store says thieves went after them, not once but twice this weekend

and cleaned out merchandise and cash. pictures of broken glass and empty shelves saying this is the third time that they have been hit in the last few months. they shared the security video of thieves using power tools inside of the store, hopping out of a window after they ransacked it. the window does have bars but that clearly did not stop them. they basically cut through the bars like butter. the owner says they have to stay closed while they try to bounce back from this big financial hit. the sierra is getting a lot of snow. its first major snowfall of the season. tonight, cars are buried in it along i-80. chain controls are in effect tonight. not surprising that is the case for the past couple of days the sierra has seen 11 inches of fresh powder over the last 24 hours. it nearly doubled the seasonal snowfall to date. i know paul, we saw a lot of snow last winter, looks like we are off to an interesting start.

>> right. a little slow. both in terms of bay area rainfall and sierra snowfall so far this year. this is what we are anticipating. a slow december with some rain here and some snow in the mountains. it looks like the long-range data is pointing at an active pattern shaping up once we are passed the first of the year. long-range data. we will keep you updated. in the short term, things will dry out again over the next few days, high pressure, hill of air in the atmosphere. edging closer to the coast. that sop so -- keeps it down. the high cloud cover over head it filters the sunshine. does not block it. we will be doing okay in terms of solarpower generation, better than we did today with the rain showers and the cloud cover in the afternoon. we saw a little bit of sun towards the end of the day. should see plenty of sunshine tomorrow. clear skies

tonight, cold start tomorrow morning, passing clouds over head. fog at ground level to begin the day on saturday. but, i think part low cloudy skies at the worst. same on sunday, a lot of gray on future cast here for the second part of the weekend. clouds up in the atmosphere that produce that milky filtered effect. no rain anywhere close to the pay area as we head through the next several days. next hint of moisture does not arrive until after the seven-day forecast. the winds will pick up tomorrow. not too strong to start the day. tomorrow afternoon, 20-30 mile-an-hour on the map. it will be enough to notice, enough to make it feel cooler than near normal friday afternoon. now, the temperatures are dropping off. clear skies over head. the temperatures have dropped to the 30s in santa rosa. holding to to 50 in san jose and santa rosa. middle to upper 30s to around 40 degrees. the temperatures around the bay, in

the lower to middle 40s. moderating influence of the water. these temperatures are chilly but, normally chilly for this time of the year. only two to three degrees below average. not unexpected for the middle of december. we are going to recover from the chilly start with the temperatures reaching up to near or slightly above average. should be a couple degrees above in san jose. 59 or 60 degrees. so, we will be within two or three degrees on either side of the the cool spots, livermore, 57 degrees, or on the coast. half-moon bay. 57 degrees. track that to summertime where we will see it. right at 60 degrees in san francisco. the temperatures in the north bay, you will be the cool spots tomorrow morning. the cold spots in fact with the temperatures a couple degrees above freezing. you are going to warm up to 60 degrees, that is where you should be for the middle of december. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. inland parts of the bay area. we will continue the trend of near average temperatures through the weekend. then, just a little bit of a warm up, a baby warm

up heading through next week. the temperatures up into the middle 60s on a widespread basises. reaching to the upper half of the 60s next week. there is absolutely not a drop of rain in the forecast. one of the long-range forecast models was trying to bring in a chance of rain showers wednesday night into thursday. it looks much more likely it will hold off until friday night into saturday. it is something that we have plenty of time to continue to evaluate. making our way through a pleasant weekend. outdoor plans for what you want to do or have to do, mother nature will not interfere at all. keep it on the agenda. bay area food bainchs could really use your help this holiday season of the food bank of contra costa and solantra got $10,000 worth of help. the

the anticharles barkley approach. check out all of these teenagers trying to lift a car outside of their school. it looks like they are pulling a prank but an airman realized it was anything but. >> i noticed legs come out and i was like my gosh there is a child under this car. >> a whole family actually pinned underneath. together, the group was able to free a 2-year-old boy, a 3-year-old girl, and their mom who works at the school near salt lake city. she was injured enough to need surgery. her two kids are already out of the hospital. >> the doctor said it was a miracle that they did not have severe life-threatening injuries. the 2-year-old actually had tire marks on his back. and, the doctors can not find anything wrong. >> wow. >> the police think the driver may have been blinded by the sun at the time. 17-year-olds are usually thinking about what they will do after high school. dreaming about turning 21 and hitting

the bar but one teen just passed the state bar to become a lawyer, a different kind of bar. something that a lot of adults spend years trying to do at 17 years old. he became the youngest person ever to pass california's exam when he took it over the summer. wow! the previous record holder not much older, only 18 years old. park started high school at 13 and finished law school earlier this year. he is now 18 and was just sworn in as one of california's youngest practicing attorneys. my goodness. she is a catholic, lighting a menorah for the first time. what one east bay community is doing differently this holiday season

at a boiling point. >> every holiday season mary kelly lights up a christmas tree. but tonight, for the first time in her entire life she is lighting up a hanukkah menorah instead. mary is not jewish. she is catholic. but this, she says, is her way of slowing her support for the jewish community. >> i was taught rightious gentile during the holocaust. i would like to think that i would have been one. this is a gesture towards that. >> reporter: with anti-semitism on the rise, and the war between israel and hamas. good-hearted nonjews across the country are joining their jewish friends and neighbors in solidarity. placing candles in their windows as part of a

grass roots national movement called project menorah. mary, who has many jewish friends says this was the least that she can do. >> i feel helpless. i also felt as a nonjew that so much of the negative response is not out of unkindness it is really out of ignorance. >> this rabbi says having support has made all of the difference in the world. >> jewish people right now are feeling very much alone lelight menorah and having our friends light them in their windows, lets us know we, indeed, are not alone. >> the miracle was the oil lasted eight days. her friend, who is jewish, echoed those sentiments >> when you have people who are willing to stand with you, it
