unique opportunities to put renewable technology to the test. >> reporter: just about everywhere you go here, it's a tradition to take off your shoes. it helps keep the inside spaces clean. >> it's kind of a nice tradition actually. >> reporter: it's also a tradition because it's been a coal mining community for the last 100 years, and coal is a dirty business. burning coal warms the planet, contributing to the very problem this community now faces. but not for much longer. it's last coal mine is closing by order of the norwegian government. and the people here have ambitious plans to transition to renewable energy while helping other arctic communities do that too, including in alaska. >> most of them are getting their energy from fossil fuels these days, so we have a large potential. >> reporter: heidi is the ceo

of the local mining company leading that transition away from coal. we met in one of the company's old mines. your job is to take this company in a new direction, huh? >> yeah, it is. it is a huge challenge, right, to try and transform the energy production in the whole arctic from fossil to renewable. >> reporter: sounds like a great idea, but heidi is telling me the reliability of solar and wind power in the arctic is still an unknown. >> we don't have a lot of experience of how it can handle the rough climate and weather conditions that we have up here. so we have a job to verify the technology in the arctic climate. >> reporter: in an even more report part is the northern most solar park in the world. it's getting great results in the summer when the sun shines 24 hours a day, but surprisingly also in spring.

turns out solar panels can capture light from the sun and light that reflects off the snow. and when there's too much power, it can be stored for several hours in industrial batteries like these. in the united states, we're on a similar path. since 2019, we now get more of our energy from renewable sources than we do from coal. here they've stopped burning coal all together. in a celebration in october, the coal plant switched over to diesel, which is cleaner. >> so how are we doing here? well, government data from 2022 shows 46% of the power produced in california comes from renewable energy. that ranks our state fifth in the nation. all right, from that we go to our renewable weather. >> you might think we'd be

higher on that list for as many solar panels and wind farms we have. but there are other states that do a lot of wind energy. like iowa and oklahoma. florida has a ton of solar. >> we need to catch up. >> we're in the top five, so that's a good thing. let's just keep going. >> so you were saying earlier you're thinking seven of eight days we may see the rain kind of down the road. >> it is way down the road. in the short term nice weather for the weekend. whatever you want to do outside. >> do it. >> just be outside. it will be fine. a little chilly tonight because we have clear skies over the bay area, including over downtown san francisco as we look out from the mark hopkins hotel. here's what to know over the next few days. clear and chilly, even flat out cold in a few locations by early tomorrow morning. but high temperatures are going to warm up to near average over the next few days. it's going to be dry this weekend. some passing clouds overhead, especially on sunday. just filtering the sunshine. the

next rain chance doesn't approach until the end of next week at the earliest. rain chances next week, you can see we're way down the line here. maybe friday night, maybe saturday more likely saturday night. some of the latest forecast model data pushes that back into the following week, the last full week before christmas. a lot of uncertainty at this point because it's down the line which is beyond the trend forecast. just a pattern recognition for forecasters. is it a favorable set up for a chance of rain to approach our corner of the west coast? that's something we'll focus on plenty over the next several days. hopefully the details come into better focus during the time frames that are a little closer to that rain arriving. different perspective. looking east from salesforce tower. clear skies. temperatures dropping quickly, except in san francisco. still 53 degrees. everyone else dipping into the 40s. low 40s most spots. still 48 in san jose. but lows tonight are going to be cold. dropping all the way down into the mid to

49ers taking on the seahawks. matt will have more on that momentarily. weather looks great. some passing clouds. just filtering the sun. chilly for the early tailgaters, but temperatures around 60 at kickoff, and temperatures warm into the low 60s throughout the course of the afternoon. no need to layer up too much. let's look at the seven-day. we start with inland parts of the bay area where temperatures will warm up just a little bit by early next week. monday and tuesday looking like the warmest days in the seven-day forecast, and we're not talking about december heat wave or anything close. but temperatures running five or six degrees above average. we'll take that while it's here. temperatures are not going to be impacted by the cloud cover much. nearly identical highs saturday and sunday. friday's cloud cover is the beginning signs of the more unsettled weather pattern that will eventually head our way. it's just a matter of when the next rain chance is going to arrive in the bay area. just enjoy the dry weekend while it's here. looks like we'll be dry for most of next week as well. >> all right, paul, thank you.

so we're just going to say it. the chp was on paw patrol today. officer lugo was heading down 880 in oakland when she saw this guy running around in the lanes near 66th avenue. so she scooped him up, gave him a ride to the shelter where hopefully he found his forever family. look at that face. all right, we also have an update on two orphaned mountain lions rescue on the peninsula last month. it looks like maple and willow are getting stronger and stronger by the day. their keepers at the oakland zoo say the sisters keep gaining weight and are learning to climb and like people. they also enjoy the luxury of regular feeds and warm padded places to sleep. well, they call it the silent night. why this college basketball crowd can't make a sound until their team does something very specific. matt? one of my favorite things

him something about the warriors. they started a tough three-game road trip, and it's not great. started off in oklahoma city. golden state has already seen the thunder three times this year. all tight contests. friday no different. tie game with seconds left. steph curry, step back, looked like the dagger. but once more chance for the thunder. the warriors elect to foul, up three, usually a good news. but second look, looked like a fair call. so okc sink all their free throws. two minutes to go in overtime, curry's pass intercepted. isaiah can't knock it down from the corner, but chet is there for the offensive board and put back. thunder win 138-136. the warriors are now 10 and 12. far too many turnovers for golden state.

they gave it away 29 times, the most turnovers in the steve kerr era that was previously 27. the warriors set a franchise record for most turnovers since february of 2002. there was some good. they had seven players in double figures, led by steph with 34. and another big game from jonathan coming off the bench. he ended up in the closing line up, and deservedly so. he played a season high 29 minutes. the 49ers might be the hottest team in the nfl entering week 14. they're riding four straight wins into the game against the seahawks on sunday. with a win in this game, and a loss from the packers or vikings, the niners can punch a ticket to the playoffs. but the 49ers have won their last four meetings against seattle, including the 41-13 win on thanksgiving. at 13 point home favorites, all signs indicate the niners will make it five in a row on
