f0 from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. now at 11:00, a big day for the 49ers as their march towards the super bowl looks like it may go through santa clara. one street in oakland is taking the term nosey neighbor to a new level. how they're coming together to fight rising crime. >> i think our biggest defense is unity with your neighbors. plus, recent violence at santa rosa schools has the district making changes. what they're doing and when you can weigh in on the plan. thank you for joining us at 11:00. i'm andrea nakano. it
11:01 pm
was a big day for the 49ers. there were two games san francisco was happy about on sunday. vern glenn has the details on the first one. >> the 49ers finished off a season sweep of the seahawks on sunday. then watched philadelphia lose to dallas. that moves san francisco into the number 1 seed in the nfc. the 28-16 victory was the 49ers fifth win in a row. they had over 500 yards of offense with brock purdy throwing for a career high of 368. samuel and mccaffery each went over the century mark, and the defense force turnovers, but still they weren't satisfied. >> i think there were some things that were a little sloppy. we were just a little inconsistent throughout the day. but guys made a ton of plays. it wasn't perfect football by any means, but our only goal is to get a win, and we found a way to do it.
11:02 pm
>> getting 500 yards of offense is good, but the game didn't feel as dominant as it probably looked on the stat sheet. felt real sloppy on the offense every now and then. we left a lot of meat on the bone. >> well, we won't leave any meat on the bone from sunday's win coming up on game day at the bottom of the hour. >> thanks, vern. the 49er faithful are celebrating tonight after getting the win. as odd as this may sound, many gathered to cheer on their bitter rival the dallas cowboys. betty yu was at a bar in sunnyvale flooded with 49er fans for a game they weren't playing in. >> reporter: after the niners beat the seahawks earlier in the day, faithful fans celebrated yet another win of sorts inside this sunnyvale bar. life long 49ers fan and sunnyvale resident jason found

an unlikely alliance with cowboys fans sunday evening. 49er fans needed dallas to beat the philadelphia eagles for the team to move to the top spot in the nfc. you need to root for the cowboys? what's that like? >> it's tough. but in the long run, when it comes down to it, we want home field advantage throughout the playoffs. so sometimes you have to bite the bullet and root for a team you really don't want to. >> reporter: if just for one night, the two rival fan bases were friendly at the stadium sports bar. the cowboys cruised to a 33-13 victory. >> everything is starting to fill in. like tetrisful everything is filling in the way you want it to. >> reporter: how do you feel about rooting for the cowboys? >> we didn't really root for them, but it was positive for us. >> reporter: and cowboys fans embraced it. how did it feel to have the niners support? >> it was cool. it was great. they all bought me drinks
11:04 pm
because they were winning. tomorrow they'll hate each other. >> reporter: from tailgating in the parking lot to the stands, you could feel the energy among the faithful at levi stadium. >> i missed maybe three games in 25 years. i was born a niner fan. i was born in san francisco. team of the 80s. i was there for that. so this is an amazing moment right now. >> oh, i'm feeling awesome. i'm feeling great. i'm feeling immaculate. i feel like we're ready to take over the world. let's go! >> reporter: the high from the niners game lasted through the night. we still have four weeks to go, but you sound very confident. >> yeah, i'm very confident. i called it earlier in the year that they would make the super bowl. i didn't say they would win, but i feel they'll make the super bowl. >> reporter: and after today? >> a lot more. we might win the whole thing. >> fans also sharing their enthusiasm on social media. one fan saying they've never believed in the team more. and
11:05 pm
remember, as vern just mentioned, he'll have much more on the game and the race to the playoffs coming up on game day. turning now to other news, santa rosa's superintendent is teaming up with the city's police department to bring extra security to school campuses through the end of the year. an officer will be stationed at each santa rosa high school for the next two weeks leading up to winter break. officers will also routinely check in with each middle school campus. the board of education will be talking about school safety at their meeting on wednesday. there will be a chance for public comment. now, this comes after a montgomery high school freshman was stabbed to death in a classroom fight this past march. and nearly two weeks ago, a stabbing at santa rosa high school landed a 14-year-old in the hospital. last week, a fight at a santa rosa middle school ended in one student brandishing a knife. a live look at oakland where people living in the city's laurel district say there have been several home

burglaries and violent assaults. the latest victim happened to be the neighborhood watch block captain. da lin shows us how she's responding by uniting neighbors to keep each other safe. >> reporter: this part of laurel district is typically pretty safe, but neighbors say in the last six months, they've experienced a big increase in burglaries and violence. the action of burglars was frightening. the response from neighbors has been heartwarming. let's go back to thursday morning around 11:30. surveillance footage shows two masked men with hoods walking up to this house. >> came out to the dining room, and someones jumping up in the window. i just said oh, no, like you're not going to do that. >> reporter: the two burglars saw ann and ran down the stairs to a waiting car. >> i don't get scared, i get mad. >> reporter: she came out of her house and got the license plate. she called 911. but
11:07 pm
because they had already left, it was no longer a crime in progress. she says police never came. she found out at the time same car and burglar successfully broke into a neighbor's house a short time later. >> it is daunting that you know somebody consider ready to break in, and nobody will come out. >> reporter: neighbors say that due to the shortage of police, they feel helpless and on their own. many neighbors on georgia street have experienced crime in recent months, including this october shooting. the people inside a black car fired 17 shots at a white car that was driving away. also in october, a man shoved a uc berkeley student in front of her house, took her purse, and drove off with her car. >> already this year, two doors get broken and they come in and search my house. >> we're going to try to all get motion lights. >> reporter: the neighbors have been working together, and on sunday morning met again at
11:08 pm
ann's house following the attempted break in. >> it's a good idea to have your neighbors like in front of you next door on speed dial. >> we recognize that the best way to address this is to partner with each other, to look out for each other. >> reporter: cameras, gates, and communicating via what's app. but they say no amount of technology can beat eyes and ears. >> i think our biggest defense is unity with our neighbors and talking. >> reporter: oakland police say violent crime is up 21% this year compared to last. neighbors admit it will be a big challenge for them. they also talked about hiring private security guards to patrol their street. it will be an ongoing topic for them. it is the fourth night of hanukkah, and community members in san jose gathered for the city's menorah lighting event. the night included music, dancing, and some special speakers, all with san jose police standing by providing heightened security amid fears prompted by rising antisemitism

pieces today after a pair of tornadoes ripped through two communities north of nashville killing at least six people and injuring dozens. the tornadoes were part of a larger weather outbreak with two dozen tornado reports across multiple states. as for tennessee, tens of thousands remain without power as temperatures are expected to dip below freezing tonight. at least 25 are displaced after their homes collapsed. >> we got down to the basement just in time. within less than five minutes, we shut the door, and everything began to rip apart. >> reporter: what was that like? >> it was frightening. >> a total of 82 american lives have been claimed by tornadoes this year. it's the worst year for tornadoes in over a decade with tennessee among the hardest hit states just behind mississippi. in southern california's ventura county, the south fire is now 50% contained. firefighters will work overnight to knock down the

flames. most of the evacuations have been lifted. the fire broke out yesterday morning, burning along the ridge line of south mountain. there's been no reported injuries and no homes burned. darren peck is joining us now. we're kind of looking ahead to maybe some rain later in the week. but there's something else we need to watch out for. >> we need some rain in this state. and we are going to get there. but i want to talk about the fog, which i think is what you were mentioning. because that's coming first. it's coming on tuesday, and considering what we went through last week with the fog, which was pretty intense, it already looks like a somewhat similar set up. not for monday. monday looks fine. but we'll watch the futurecast and visualize the fog on tuesday in two different ways. watch what happens tuesday morning. can you see that? different kind of cloud on that. that's the fog filling the central valley. i'll bring up the opacity a little more and zoom into the bay. it's contouring into the valleys. this is going to be
11:15 pm
fog. it's that time of year where, when this stuff develops, it's fairly low to the ground. here's another way to kind of forecast this. using the actual visibility numbers, remember these numbers are telling you how far down you'll be able to see the road in miles. if it goes down below a mile, you'll have some difficulty seeing. we're seeing a lot of 0.5s and 0.4s. that's tuesday morning. so early heads up. we could be in for a little more of that on tuesday. doesn't look like it will last too long, but just a heads up. let's look ahead now. there's a chance of rain for next weekend, and this one will be a very familiar pattern. watch the storm develop out here, right back there. that's ours. not this leading line. that gets us to wednesday. we'll switch, it gets a littleless detailed, but watch what happens to our storm. it digs a deep trough, gets caught off from the storm track, and sits out there and spins for a few

day. let's just watch friday and saturday for the cut off low. we've had several of these already this winter. incredibly difficult to forecast the details and timing. we'll look at this what would be the most responsible way, and typically the most accurate way is to use ensemble models. saturday it maybe rains a little. but we'll go to sunday now. we add a little more. so you're going to see rain in the seven-day forecast on sunday. i could keep going here. monday we get a little more, tuesday we get a little more. that's too far down the road. that's not this tuesday, it's next tuesday. so start thinking about the chance of a return to rain by next saturday. and to talk about the much longer term, christmas week, we are starting to see a pretty strong signal in the long range forecast out to two

weeks that the storm track will start reorienting in a favorable way to bring us rain. here's the cut off low. the storm track is doing the loop around it. that's kind of what this whole winter has been like so far. it's been very wavy. watch it change. we'll let it play through to the last week of december, and now you have a straight line that's coming across the pacific. that's a very strong jet stream, and a very well organized storm track. and that's what it looks like when el nino starts reorienting the storm track in the winter. and the timing on that looks like as we head into christmas week. it's not a specific forecast for exact storm location or rain, but it's definitely a very strong heads up from a lot of the forecast models out that far that we'll likely start to see a more active pattern towards christmas. or at least that week. maybe a little before. much more on that as we get closer too it. all right, seven-day forecast shows you
11:18 pm
that rain showing up sunday. saturday you have a chance. remember there's still the technicality of maybe a few showers on saturday. maybe a little more on sunday. this system is going to be tricky. it will be interesting to watch. we'll have much more as we get closer to it. back to you. >> darren, those cut off lows, right? still ahead, a teen in the north bay hoping his christmas cookies will bring cheer to needy families this christmas. we'll tell you about his big goal, and ho test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test
