good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. those powerful storms are unleashing a trail of destruction starting with a string of deadly tornadoes in tennessee. the northern end of this system is now moving across the northeast with blinding rain, damaging winds, and snow. snowstorm warnings are in effect from northern new england southwards to upstate new york, areas that could see up to a nato of snow. -- foot of snow. flooding is also a big concern. alerts are posted from parts of the mid-atlantic to maine. drivers are urged to use caution for what could be a slick commute. as for the devastation in central tennessee, look at this drone video showing the extent of the damage. a mangled mess of rubble. six people were killed including a toddler. cbs' manuel bojorquez is in nashville with the story. >> reporter: there was little doubt as the intense storm blew through middle tennessee. >> oh, my god! whoa!

>> reporter: that these incredibly large funnel clouds near the heart of nashville -- >> oh, my god. >> reporter: -- would cause major damage. >> i hope nobody was in those houses. it was really bad. >> reporter: the rubble devastating, deadly, and widespread. >> this morning we have a lot of families who are suffering. >> it's going to take a lot of time and resources and that's coming together to get through this difficult time. >> reporter: the damage is heaviest in clarksville, and in hendersonville where little is left of this antique mart. that's where pam miller and five customers including sheila mays and gwendolyn murphy gardner rushed to the shelter below. >> we got down to the basement just in time within about less than five minutes, we shut the door, and everything began to rip apart. >> reporter: what was that like? >> it was frightening. >> reporter: had you not gone down there, what do you think would have happened -- >> we'd have been under all this stuff. no doubt. no doubt. >> we made it. we made it.

>> oh! >> reporter: those here are salvaging what they can, cleaning up, and taking stock. >> we need help. need help. you made it. >> reporter: how grateful are you now that you and your customers -- >> god was with us the whole time. no doubt in my mind. >> reporter: crews have been deployed to these hard-hit neighborhoods to try to restore power, but at last check more than 20,000 customers were still without electricity, and temperatures are expected to dip below freezing overnight. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, nashville. now to the war in gaza. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu's urging hamas militants to surrender saying the end is near. israel says 20 of the 117 hostages still in hamas captivity are dead, and it's not known how they died. meanwhile, hamas is threatening to kill all of the remaining hostages if its demands for more aid and prisoner swaps are not met. the u.s. state department has approved the emergency sale of

nearly 14,000 rounds of tank ammunition worth more than $106 million to israel. cbs' naomi ruchim is joining us now from new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. israeli leadership is not setting any deadline for its goal of eradicating hamas saying the duration of the war cannot be measured in weeks or perhaps even months from now. a military colonel says israeli forces are not attacking the humanitarian corridor into egypt, while some aid groups say help isn't entering the region fast enough. israeli tanks have moved into the heart of gaza's southern city of khan younis calling it the command center for hamas. sunday in a televised address, benjamin netanyahu called on fighters to surrender. hepatitis says israel will not recover the remaining hostages through force, only through negotiations. key mediators say

willingness to discuss a cease-fire is fading as the hamas-run health ministry in gaza reports the death toll is nearing 18,000. "i will take revenge for you," this man cries after he says his son was killed by sniper fire. about 90% of gaza's population have been displaced, and the head of the u.n.'s world food program says half are starving. >> we have come to a point where we're not sure if we are able to fulfill our mandate to provide assistance to people in need in gaza. >> reporter: the u.n. general assembly has scheduled an emergency meeting tomorrow to vote on an immediate cease-fire in gaza. friday the u.s. blocked a similar effort by the security council, and on saturday the biden administration announced it approved the emergency sale of ammunition to israel, bypassing congress. >> israel is in combat right now. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll finds most americans disapprove of president biden's handling of

the israel-hamas war, with few thinking his administration's actions are bringing things closer to a peaceful resolution. in terms of that u.n. emergency meeting tomorrow, there are no vetoes in the general assembly. but unlike the security council, its resolutions are not legally binding. also happening today, president biden plans to host a white house reception to mark the jewish festival of hanukkah. anne-marie? >> all right, naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much. pressure is growing on harvard's president to step down as prominent alumni, donors, and politicians call for her ouster. she's getting some support from a group of faculty. this comes after her upenn counterpart, liz magill, resigned following outrage over their testimony at an anti-semitism hearing on capitol hill. the story now from cbs' nikole killion. >> reporter: university of pennsylvania president liz magill stepped down from her

role saturday telling the school community in a short statement "it has been my privilege to serve as president of this remarkable institution," but made no reference to the firestorm surrounding her system last week to the house education committee about anti-semitism on college campuses. >> does calling for the genocide of jews violate penn's rules or code of conduct? yes or no? >> if the speech turns into conduct, it can be harassment, yes. it is a context-dependent decision, congresswoman. >> it's a context-dependent decision? that's your testimony today, calling for the genocide of jews is depending upon the context? >> reporter: new york congresswoman elise stefanik who questioned magill and the presidents of harvard and mit posted, "one down, two to go. this forced resignation of the president of penn is the bare minimum of what is required." a house panel has opened an investigation with subpoena power into the universities. >> this is not just confined to these campuses. we want to look at columbia, cornell, and many, many other

$110 billion spending bill that includes additional funding for ukraine's fight against russia. and an aboutface for donald trump. the former president says he's decided not to testify for a second time at his new york civil fraud trial. he was set to return to the stand today as the final defense witness. yesterday on social media, trump said he very successfully and conclusively testified last month and has nothing more to say. he's accused of inflating the value of his properties to obtain loans and make deals. he denies the allegations. former trump attorney meanwhile rudy giuliani is set to appear in federal court in washington today for the damage portion of his defamation case. a jury will decide how much the former new york mayor will have to pay to georgia election workers he falsely accused of fraud. the judge earlier ruled giuliani was liable. the election workers sued giuliani claiming they were harassed and threatened after his false claims. coming up, a breakthrough in

a large whale created quite the stir at a beach in perth, australia. it was spotted in shallow waters close to the beach on saturday. about a dozen people swam up to the whale to touch it. people who were there said that they were concerned about the whale's health. it swam away, though, to deeper waters about an hour later. a nebraska priest dies after being stabbed, and a break in a homicide case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the detroit news" reports police have a new suspect in custody in the deadly stabbing death of a going leader. the body of samantha woll was found outside her home in october. sources tell "the detroit news"

that the man is not acquaintance and appears to be a random stranger. another man was taken into custody last month and released without being charged. authorities have said there's no evidence the attack was motivated by anti-semitism. "the omaha world herald" says a priest died after he was stabbed in the rectory of his small church. police responded to a reported break-in yesterday at the baptist church near omaha. they found the reverend, stephen gutsgsell, injured, and the alleged attacker inside. he later died. kierre williams was arrested and charged with homicide. and the "san antonio express news" says a man was arrested in the killing of a texas cheerleader. 16-year-old lizbeth medina was found dead last tuesday in her family's apartment in the small town of edna. on saturday police arrested 23-year-old rafael romero about 60 miles away. authorities say it's unclear if the undocumented man had a previous relationship with the
