deteriorating conditions. as fighting rages on, life is becoming more desperate inside gaza. the push to get aid in, but first -- ukraine is a stepping stone for russia. >> a dire warning. ukrainian president zplen ski sounding the alarm as he kicks off a quick trip to the u.s., his personal plea to congress. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the white house says time is running out for congress to pass an aid package to help ukraine in its fight against russia's invasion. today ukraine's president will make his appeal directly to members of congress and the white house. this is volodymyr zelenskyy's third trip to the u.s. since the war began. cbs's naomi ruchim is joining us from new york now with details on this. naomi, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. newly declassified u.s. intelligence shows that russia

seems to believe that a military deadlock through the winter will drain western support for ukraine, so this is last-ditch plea from president volodymyr zelenskyy to keep aid flowing as winter settles in. >> reporter: ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy warns his country is just a stepping stone for russia as he makes his plea for more aid from the white house on capitol hill today. >> you can count on ukraine, and we hope just as much to be able to count on you. >> reporter: in addition to his white house visit, zelenskyy is meeting with u.s. senators from both parties nearly a week after a multi-billion-dollar aid pack package that included funding for ukraine, israel, and border security failed to overcome a procedural vote. president zelenskyy is also set to meet with house speaker mike johnson who says a national security bill should focus first on u.s. security.

>> the battle is for the border. >> reporter: yesterday zelenskyy addressed military officials alongside secretary of defense lloyd austin who talked about support. >> it's unshakeable. >> reporter: senate democrats say talks continue toward a deal on a national security package, though, their republican counterparts remain bitterly divided. >> we need to continue supporting ukraine. >> i won't vote to give them another penny. >> reporter: senate republicans who do support aid for ukraine say they don't think zelenskyy's visit today will change minds. the white house says ukraine's president is expected to give president biden an update on developments on the battlefield during their meetings today and that president biden will make clear that the u.s. stands with ukraine during this difficult time. still, time is running out for a new round of aid. there are just a few days left before congress recesses for the year on friday. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much, naomi.

well, the supreme court is set to weigh in for the first time on the historic criminal prosecution of a former president. special counsel jack smith asked the justices yesterday to break from tradition and decide quickly on whether donald trump can be prosecuted on charges he plotted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. now, the high courtindicated it would decide swiftly. legal analysts say smith is trying to make sure his case moves forward on march 4th. >> he knows that time is of the essence, and he is trying to keep that march trial date, so that's why he doesn't want to wait for the intermediate court. he doesn't want to wait for the d.c. circuit. he's going straight to the supreme court, and he said throughout his request i need a ruling from you now. >> well, the court is scheduled to meet in january. it's unclear whether the justices would convene sooner to take up smith's request. a texas woman who sued the state so that she could have an abortion is now getting the

procedure elsewhere. the state supreme court rejected kate cox's unprecedented challenge of one of the most restrictive bans in the u.s. a judge gave cox permission last week, but that decision was put on hold by the state's all-republican high court. the court then ruled against the mother of two yesterday. doctors say her fetus has a fatal condition, putting her life at risk, and may prevent her from getting pregnant again. >> i think ultimately it's really important to recognize that pregnancy is not a health-neutral event and it can be unpredictable and we need to recognize situations like these are going to continue to happen and that ultimately, thankfully, kate is able to leave the state for her care, but there are going to be plenty of others who won't be able to do the same. >> it was not disclosed where cox went to get an abortion. >> and turning now to the war in gaza and another attack on a ship in the red sea. authorities say a missile

slammed into a norwegian flag tanker. yemen's houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for it. meanwhile israel says it is opening a second crossing to inspect cargo, a step meant to increase the amount of humanitarian aid getting in. the idf released video of what it says is a stache of weapons found inside a mosque in gaza. and another hostage is sharing her heartbreaking story. sharon alony cunio survived 55 days in captivity with her twin 3-year-old girls. her husband is still being held. she said every day waiting was like russian roulette, not knowing whether she would live or die. charlie d'agata has the report. >> reporter: the video shows troops advancing further into southern gaza. a house-by-house battle urban warfare.

with hamas officials updating the death toll past 18,000, envoys from the u.n. security council visited the egyptian border crossing with rafah. the u.s.'s sole vito against a cease-fire has fueled anti-war protests in the west bank. the anger and the outrage is growing here in the west bank with every day the war goes on and every victim inside gaza. aimed not at just israel but increasingly against america. >> my message to the united state is not to use their veto against the cease-fire because they believe in democracy and they support democracy and democracy is saving lives. >> reporter: despite those frustrations, the u.s. is already part of post-war plans for gaza, according to palestinian minister of social affairs ahmad majdalani. >> we have discussed the ideas. >> reporter: those ideas may not be the same.

surveillance video captured the moment a seven-story apartment building partially collapsed in new york city. no injuries were reported but more than 30 families were displaced. officials say residents of this bronx building must now find a new place to stay just two weeks before christmas. the cause of the collapse is under investigation. a russian opposition leader is missing from prison. a new punishment was handed down in the discord leads case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news"line. teixeira is now facing charges under the espionage act. he has pleaded not guilty. the bbc reports jailed russian opposition leader alexei navalny has gone missing. he was serving a 19-year term at a russian penal colony on russian extremism, which are widely viewed as being politically motivated. a spokesperson says he's no longer an inmate on the roster. navalny is a fierce critic of russian president vladimir putin. he has been behind bars since 2021 and was due to be transferred to another penal colony. the white house says it's deeply concerned by the reports. and the portland press herald says the brain of a gunman in a mass shooting in maine will undergo testing. boston university cte center will take a closer look at robert card's brain. they hope to learn about any injury or trauma his brain may have received during his service in the army reserves. he opened fire at a bowling alley and a bar in october,
