it's a major u.s. hub for travel. now we're learning the runways at sfo are sinking. >> if you don't want to imply there is a danger, that they have to have a concern. but this is just a warning for the future. and that future is not that far. >> we break down how much and how fast these runways are sinking and who the researchers are calling on to take notice. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook. it is not what you want to hear especially if you have flights booked right now during the holidays. but we're looking into what a new study on

sinking runways really means for travelers now and in the future. but first let's get you caught up to the headlines. police are investigating this as a hate crime. pieces of the menorah were thrown on the ground, some spray painted with anti-semitic graffiti. unclear who is responsible for all of this. police are asking anyone with information to reach out. a new menorah will be lit tonight. northbound 680 is closed off this afternoon. an overturned vehicle spilled diesel on berryessa road. the hazmat crew have been on scene since this morning. tesla is recalling more than two million cars because of issues with its self-driving feature. this comes after a two-year investigation into a series of crashes involving autopilot. according to documents from u.s. safety regulators, tesla will send out

a software update. city leaders announced a nearly $13 million grant from the feds to help protect e pedestrians. they say they will use that money to make improvements. things like protected bike lanes, better sidewalks. police say 47 people have died in traffic accidents this year, and that is outpacing the number of homicides in the city. draymond green has apologized. a flagrant two foul and another ejection, his third so far this year. the nba has not decided how many games he will be suspended. our next chance for rain is not too far from now. meteorologist darren peck joins me from the virtual studio. >> and that chance for rain on

sunday and monday. giving you an early heads up here and we'll be a couple of degrees warmer for the remainder of the week. the fog shouldn't be widespread or too problematic for the rest of the week. that's what we're waiting for. this system out here, we see it in the long range models. watch it develop off the coast. it will kind of wind itself up and then holds off until sunday. if we want to see when it will bring rain here, we need to go to longer range models and lose some of the resolution on that. but we see it. showers will come in for sunday and monday. yes, another one that will come in behind it. so the forecast to put it mildly is a messy one. two separate systems are coming in. what we're going to focus on right now is just the first one. if we look at how rainfall accumulates across california over the next few days, we'll let it go through the days. for saturday, we likely don't get much of anything. it'll hold off until very late saturday night. by sunday and just looking at how much rain we could have gotten on sunday, maybe as much as half an inch of rain. on monday, we're going to add

more. and that is just from the first system. we're going to take a look at that in its entirety and get into the seven-day forecast. we'll see you for the full forecast, back. back to you. thousands of people get ready to fly out for the holiday. a new study reveals they're sinking. researchers say they are doing so at a faster rate than other runways around the country. our max darrow has more on what that means for travelers now and down the stretch. >> reporter: day in and day out, planes take off and touchdown at the san francisco international airport. the runways send planes off or welcome them to the bay area. according to researchers of virginia tech, those runways are sinking. >> if we don't want to imply

that there is a danger, but it is just a warning for the future and that future is not that far. >> they will present their findings this week put on by the physical union. they spend about seven teams surveying 15 coastal airports. they found the runways are sinking at a rate of 10 millimeters a year or .4 of an inch. >> it's the highest of the outpost we consider. >> but he says it isn't happening all at once. it's happening at varying rates along the runway. >> it could change the slope, barging along the wrong way. it could lead to the rainfall. >> according to the researchers, the shifts are small, but they will add up in the bigger picture. they're hoping their findings will serve as an eye opener for

policymakers. >> it helps policymakers to prioritize where to spend the money when and how. by prioritizing the infrastructure, we can reduce the vulnerabilities to future hazards. >> we will save a lot in the future. and it is important that action is taken on time. >> reporter: the reason is climate change that will continue to impact life and infrastructure in the years to come. >> the better that we will begin to think about building resilience against structure and climate change. then the better. >> reporter: a spokesperson told us they haven't had a chance to review the study, and they were not ready to comment. however, they said their protection program is being developed to protect sfo from rising sea levels should keep the airport safe for decades to come and will be completed more than 40 years in advance. the sinking runways will pose no imminent threat.

>> this moment everything is safe. >> reporter: he hopes their research will pay off as planes continue to take off and touch down well e into the future. >> of the 15 airports they measured, lax's runways have had the slowest rates of sinking. other bay area airports were not included in the survey. what is sfo doing to fight climate change? had they didn't specifically address the sinking runways, but the airport has proposed a $590 million project to build a new sea wall to protect them from rising sea levels. construction could start as early as 2025. still ahead, it was suppose to be the future of shopping. those self-checkout lanes. they were meant to get you in and out faster, right? find out why some bay area stores are doing away with them. plus celebrating one big

is that a perfect shot of the golden gate bridge or what? i could look at that all day. well the self-checkout options at some san francisco stores were suppose to help you get in shop and get out faster, right? but it seems to have some unintend ited consequences. shoppers say the shopping experience of the future is now a thing of the fast. >> reporter: as soon as you walk into this safeway, you are greeted by gates, designed to deter shoplifting. empty checkout aisles also have gates. the exit doors are permanently closed on the other side of the store. a security guard told me the store recently added more guards to

deal with thieves. safeway completely removed its self-checkout kiosks. he says it is not unusual to witness shoplifting. >> two guys stuffing bags of chicken in their backpacks. when i told the security people about it, they said there is nothing that we can do. we have to see them in action. >> reporter: on this night, he came to pick up the baking ingredients. he remembers when he has to scan his receipt to exit the self-checkout area. >> i thought that would stop some of them because i used to use the self-checkouts. i would see people come with stuff and walk through that area and just walk out because then they don't have to go through the cashiers. >> reporter: in july, safeway added these gates designed to slow down possible thieves. now the entire area is closed off.

johnson also noticed that the self-checkout stands were removed. >> it would be nice, but i get the reason of why they are having them out. >> reporter: the screens at the self-checkout area have been disabled. workers confirmed they were deactivated due to shoplifting. target has pointed to theft both shoplifting and organized retail crime responsible for the increases in losses. they closed three bay area stores for those reasons. >> it's a symptom of the larger problem, i believe. >> we did reach out to safeway and target about removing the checkout kiosk, but we haven't heard back yet. these volunteers are packing up for the holidays. today glide and the living campaign bag meals in the bay

we don't round here. we're making sure they have a chance to live a successful life. >> what's happening that's making the need so much more serious? >> we've had disaster after disaster. a lot of people found out the help was available. >> there is a short fall that you're facing? >> that's right. we will have a difficult decision to make, which they will be fed and everybody will get a little less. >> understanding how it could be different for different people? >> right. it's not having the dependable access to food and the hunger is basically the uncomfortable pain that people will experience.

patchy fog tomorrow. they have not issued the fog advisory. the fog has been getting less widespread and that trend will continue into tomorrow. so plan on some patchy fog likely north bay valleys, where it will be cold. going back down in the mid to upper 30s about everywhere else. daytime highs on thursday. there's that warmth that liz was talking about. these temperatures are above average with a few high clouds and that's it. we've kind of taken a look at this chance for rain. it will be one of those cut off lows that will sit off the coast for a little bit and stall for a day. thankfully they will not sit there forever. but it does sit there and stall for a day and then wobbles a little bit, which it does make the forecast for this still slightly uncertain, but we are close to it now that it will come in on sunday and monday and then it

will get real messy. let's slow that down. the first system comes in on sunday. on monday, we're dealing with that. put rain on both of those days at this point. another one sneaks in had from behind it, and we go through a fairly wet system, getting us into next week. every day next week will have a chance for rain on it. there will be breaks, but a chance for each one of these days. it will be a busy week. another way to look at it. let's break it down by day, saturday, we don't get anything. sunday is rainfall. could get as much as half an inch of rain on sunday. then into monday, we add some more, so you can pick out the numbers there. the numbers will go up a bit. we are keeping it broad here. that's what we've got to do with this system. the details will likely adjust a little bit. sunday into monday.

the next system, we will take you through the rest of next week. each day the totals will go up a little bit more. stay on top of the forecast with us. it will be an active one. and if you have heard there is another storm, maybe more than one coming our way, that also is a good part of the forecast. we'll get into the details on that over the next few days. that's too far out, but we're watching the storm track go through a unique evolution. just a little tease there and an advisement to stay on top of it. your seven-day forecast. when we do that, we'll take a lack at numbers that are kind of warm. sunday and monday, they have the rain on them. so tuesday and wednesday, but tuesday and wednesday, it's more generalized with a good chance for rain as well. even after we will get this first system, which again is
