how the president is responding. fierce fighting. israeli troops suffer their biggest single-day loss as the families of american hostages look for answers from the white house. and a record-breaking day on wall street. what the fed said that sent stocks soaring. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. house republicans escalated their investigation into president biden, voting unanimously to launch a formal impeachment inquiry citing his son's legal troubles. democrats accused their gop counterparts of playing politics and exacting revenge on behalf of twice-impeached former president trump. jarred hill is joining us from new york with more on the inquiry and hunter biden's public defense of his father. >> reporter: yeah, the congressional investigation has been going on for months already. republicans say the vote to officially approve an impeachment inquiry gives their

probe some new teeth. that's despite concerns from within the gop that the investigation hasn't produced enough evidence of misconduct by the president. in a party-line vote -- >> the resolution is adopted. >> reporter: the house gop majority formally authorized an impeachment inquiry into president joe biden. >> the house has spoken. and i think pretty loudly, pretty clearly. >> reporter: house republicans questioned whether the president has financially benefited from his son's foreign business dealings, and they claim the white house has stonewalled their investigations. with the probe under way the vote gives the body stronger leal standing to issue subpoenas for witnesses and documents. >> we expect to have people honor our subpoenas. we want to wrap this investigation up. >> reporter: the president's son, hunter, a focal point of the investigation, defended his father in a rare public statement on capitol hill. >> there is no evidence to support the allegations that my father was financially involved in my business because it did not happen.

>> reporter: his comments came as he defied a house subpoena to testify behind closed doors. instead, offering to appear at a public hearing. >> republicans do not want an open process where americans can see their tactics. >> reporter: hunter biden was indicted last week on new federal tax fraud charges, and he also faces federal gun charges. the white house said president biden was familiar with what his son was going to say yesterday. >> did you watch -- >> reporter: with the elder biden slamming the republican impeachment inquiry as a baseless stunt. what happens now? now those in charge of the inquiry will continue work with added subpoena power. and at some point the gop is going to decide if whatever they find is enough to bring articles of impeachment, and that is a high bar. >> it is a high bar. going to be really interesting. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. now to the war in gaza. white house national security adviser jake sullivan will be in

israel today to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu as the country comes under international pressure amid the humanitarian crisis in gaza. heavy rain is adding to the misery for palestinians now living in tents in gaza's south where they were told to seek refuge even as the region also comes under daily bombardment. israeli forces have been locked in heavy combat in and around gaza city with palestinian militants carrying out one of the deadliest single attacks since the invasion began. sadly, we are learning about the deaths of two more hostages whose bodies are believed to be held by hamas. one is an agricultural internal y -- -- intern from tanzania. ed o'keefe has more on the families of american hostages who met with president biden yesterday. >> reporter: the two-hour meeting was the president's first face-to-face encounter with families of americans being held hostage in gaza. >> we could have no better friend in washington or in the white house than president biden himself and his administration.

>> reporter: but little is known about the state of those still being held. was the president able to share anything about their condition? >> we are going to keep the content of the conversation private. >> reporter: the white house says there are eight americans still unaccounted for including americans still being held hostage. it is believed 135 total hostages of varying nationalities remain in gaza. the meeting came a day after the president for the first time publicly since the hamas attacks questioned israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu saying he has to change as israel's coalition government is making it difficult to establish a palestinian state. mr. biden also said israel is losing global support for its indiscriminate bombing of gaza. attacks deemed indiscriminate are usually considered violations of international law. did he misspeak yesterday when he said that israel was carrying out indiscriminate attacks? >> the president has spoken about our concerns over civilian casualties in gaza and about

urging our israeli counterparts to be more careful and deliberate. >> reporter: in israel, netanyahu defiantly said "we are continuing until the end," adding, "in the face of international pressures, nothing will stop us." in gaza heavy fighting continued leading to the deaths of ten israeli soldiers. their highest single-day losses so far. while the president met with families of hostages being held in gaza, it's incredibly rare for him to come into contact with any family members of dozens of other americans being detained around the world, something that advocates for people being held in afghanistan, china, venezuela, and other countries called out today. ed o'keefe, cbs news, the white house. the supreme court agreed to hear two cases that could have a big impact across the country. one case involves access to the so-called abortion pill mifepristone. one of two drugs used in the

most common method of abortion in the u.s. the justices will decide on the most common abortion pill and whether to reverse a ruling preventing mail order access and limiting the drug's use to the first seven weeks of pregnancy. the second case involves charges filed on the january 6th attack on the capitol. the justices will review a charge of obstruction of an official proceeding that has been brought against more than 300 people including former president donald trump. the defendants say that law does not apply to them because it specifically involves the destruction of documents and records. a federal judge has put donald trump's washington election interference case on hold. judge tanya chutkan agreed to pause the case while the former president pursues his claims that he's immune from prosecution. on monday special counsel jack smith asked the supreme court to fast track an opinion on trump's claims of immunity. meanwhile, a federal appeals court denied trump's attempt to claim that presidential immunity protects him from being held liable in a defamation lawsuit.

former magazine columnist e. jean carroll is suing trump for comments he made in 2019 when he denied raping carroll in the 1990s. the appeals court upheld a lower court's ruling that trump waited too long to raise the immunity defense. former trump attorney rudy giuliani, meanwhile, is expected to testify today in the damage portion of his defamation case. a judge earlier ruled that giuliani was liable for making false claims in 2020 that two georgia election workers committed fraud. he claimed they passed around a usb drive. the women later said it was a mint. a jury will decide how much giuliani will have to pay in damages. coming up, contaminated candy. schoolchildren are sickened after eating gummy bears in a bag laced with a dangerous drug. and later, tesla recall. why millions of vehicles need to be updated. i have moderate to severe crohn's disease.

police in los angeles seized about $300,000 in merchandise from what they say is an organized theft ring. officers raided two stores last night. inside they found a huge amount of goods allegedly stolen from big box stores including cases of cosmetics, diapers, and energy drinks. they say the store owners knew the products were stolen and sold them anyway. three people were arrested. elementary school children became sick after eating gummy -- gummies from a 15 to 20-laced bag, and new developments in the detroit murder investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports a suspect has been charged in the stabbing death of synagogue leader. the body of samantha woll was found outside her home in october. michael jackson-bolanos pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, home invasion, and lying to police. investigators say he did not know the victim when he broke into her home. authorities say there's no evidence that anti-semitism

played a role in the attack. "the arizona daily star" says police are ramping up patrols around the university of arizona campus after a third woman was attacked. authorities say a man has tried to abduct three women near the campus over the past few days. the most recent attack was monday when a woman reported being groped by a man who fled when she screamed. all the women gave similar descriptions of the suspect. "the daily press" says a group of virginia elementary school students became ill after eating gummies from a bag that contained fentanyl residue. authorities say seven students experienced a reaction tuesday after eating gummy bears at school. fie were taken to the hospital. one of the kids brought the gummies to school in a plastic bag. officials say the candy tested negative, but residue in the bag tested positive for fentanyl. >> i was shaking a lot because i was really scared. my mom came. she was right beside me the whole time. and i -- i was like, sorry, mom, sorry.

here's shanelle kaul with today's "money watch." >> reporter: the dow jumped to its highest point ever after the central bank signaled it would implement several rate cuts next year. the index gaining 512 points, surpassing a 37,000 mark. the nasdaq was up 200, and the s&p 500 gained 63 points. tesla is recalling almost all vehicles sold here in the u.s. to fix a system that monitors drivers using autopilot. the recall impacts roughly two million vehicles and follows a two-year investigation by the national highway traffic safety administration into crashes, some deadly, that happened while the autopilot's partially automated driving system was in use. tesla will update the car's software remotely. now to a recall from coca-cola. the fda has recalled nearly 2,000 cases of diet coke, sprite, and fanta due to

potential foreign material. although they were pulled from shelves starting last month, customers in florida, alabama, and mississippi are urged to discard the products if they still have them at home. and a classic cookie with a new twist. oreo is introducing three new flavors including this new york city inspired black & white cookie, a peanut butter version, and gluten-free golden flavor will also hit store shelves in january. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. golden state warriors forward draymond green has been suspended indefinitely by the nba. it came after green hit phoenix suns center jusuf nurkic in the face on tuesday. green was ejected from the game. he was suspended five guys last month for putting a player in a headlock during an altercation. the league said green will be required to meet certain conditions before he's allowed to return. and the los angeles dodgers will introduce their

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ ♪ you got a fast car ♪ >> "fast car" singer luke combs is apologizing to a fan after seeing a tv report this week. the report said combs won a $250,000 copyright lawsuit against nichol harness, a disabled woman in florida who sold tumblers with his likeness on them. she earned $380 for the tumblers. combs said that he was unaware of the lawsuit. >> i'm so apologetic. it makes me sick. this is not something that i would ever do.
