toll in gaza put increased pressure on the jewish state to change tactics. terror plot foiled. authorities stopped a hamas plan to target jewish sites in europe. the arrest and heightened security. and breaking overnight, new york city plunged into a brief but sudden darkness. what went wrong. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with the israel-hamas war. israel is telling the u.s. the war in gaza will likely last for several months, but a change in intensity could come much sooner. meanwhile, israeli forces recovered the body of a 28-year-old hostage who was captured at the music festival on october 7th. this as troops continue to round up suspected terrorists. the idf posted this video they say shows 70 men surrendering at a gaza hospital. and israelis gathered at the so-called hostages plaza in tel aviv last night to mark the final night of hanukkah.

jarred hill joins us from new york with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the white house national security advisor is set to meet with the palestinian president today about a post-war gaza. this is after israeli officials gave the u.s. a bit of a timetable for winding down the intensity of the war. israel's war in gaza, now raging for over two months, could soon enter a new phase. the israelis have told the u.s. the heavy air strikes and large ground operations in gaza should wrap up in the next two to three weeks. that's according to two u.s. officials, though one warns this would not mean the end of combat operations. >> do you want israel to scale back its assault -- >> reporter: yesterday president biden again urged israel to protect civilians in gaza. >> i want them to be focused on how to save civilian lives, not stop going after hamas. but be more careful. >> reporter: the white house says national security advisor jake sullivan took that message to israel meeting yesterday with

prime minister benjamin netanyahu. though netanyahu repeated that the war will continue until israel achieves, quote, absolute victory against hamas. [ chants ] the biden administration continues to come under increased public scrutiny at home with some americans calling for a cease-fire. the hamas-run gaza health ministry says more than 18,000 palestinian civilians have died since the conflict began. according to the united nations the nearly two million people who have been displaced face starve a and will disease. family members of the more than 100 hostages unaccounted for came together to call for the return. they've recovered the body of french israeli hostage elia toledano. the 28-year-old taken during the attack on a music festival. as the u.s. has part of the security team is trying to keep the conflict from spreading

following raids, prosecutors say the suspects planned to store weapons in berlin for possible attacks against jewish targets in europe. danish intelligence officials saying the investigation revealed a network of people preparing a terrorist act. on social media, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu posted. law enforcement agencies arrested seven terrorists acting on behalf of hamas and thwarted an attack. the goal, to kill innocent civilians on european soil. >> and based on my experience when the agency is knocking on the door of a country in the middle of the night to say, guys, we have a problem over here, everybody is cooperating like in a minute. i don't want to rush into conclusion, but no doubt that this block was a serious one. >> reporter: elevated terror threats not just here in the middle east or in europe, fbi

coast. a powerful storm will bring intense rain and strong winds to florida late today. it will continue to impact the southeast through the weekend. up to five inches of rain is expected from florida to north carolina. the northeast will see heavy rain sunday and monday. there could also be 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts near the atlantic coastline. jurors will continue deliberations today in the damage portion of rudy giuliani's defamation trial. the former attorney for donald trump was earlier found liable of defaming two former georgia election workers by making false claims that they committed election fraud. they say it led to threatening and racist messages. giuliani chose not to testify. the women are seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages. and a new york city jury will resume deliberations today in the assault trial of actor jonathan majors. his former girlfriend, grace jabbari, claims majors hit the side of her head, twisted her arm, and broke her finger during an argument in the back seat of a car in march.

majors' lawyers say jabbari was the aggressor. he could face up to a year in jail if convicted of the misdemeanor assault and harassment charges. and overseas, leaders of the european union failed to agree on a $54 billion financial aid package for ukraine. during a meeting in brussels yesterday, all 27 members needed to approve the aid. but the prime minister of hungary vetoed it. it comes after ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy failed to persuade u.s. lawmakers to approve additional aid for its fight with russia. the eu did agree to open negotiations with ukraine on joining the group of nations, but that could take years. russian president vladimir putin says that there will be no buys in ukraine until moscow achieves its goals. speaking at his year-end news conference yesterday, putin said russia's goals are unchanged after nearly two years of fighting. he also said his country is in talks with the u.s. about a deal to free americans evan gershkovich and paul whelan.

plane preparing to land on the same runway. the planes were more than two miles apart when that happened. no one was hurt, but the jetblue plane was damaged. the home at the center of an idaho murder case is scheduled to be demolished, and the results of a review following the lewiston mass shooting on the "morning newsstand." "the portland press herald" reports an independent review found sheriff's deputies responded reasonably before october's mass shooting in lewiston, maine. the local county sheriff's office has acknowledged that it was warned twice about shooter robert card's mental health issues before he killed 18 people at two locations. card died by suicide. the review says deputies responded reasonably under the circumstances at the time. "the idaho statesman" said the university of idaho will be demolishing the home where four students were killed last year.

it will begin december 28th. the suspect, bryan kohberger, is awaiting trial on four counts of first-degree murder. his attorneys were scheduled to visit the site of the murders to prepare for the trial. three of the victims' families previously questioned destroying the house before the trial. and a british teenager macing for six years was found in southern france. that's according to authorities. alex batty was 11 when he vanished during a trip to spain with his mother and grandfather in 2017. a delivery driver spotted the now-17-year-old walking along a road wednesday and picked him up. local media says the teen told the driver that he had been walking for four days after fleeing a spiritualist mountain community. police say his mother and grandfather are wanted in the boy's disappearance. still to come, weight watchers launches a new plan for ozempic users. first, an escaped animal is found on the wrong side of the tracks. i was looking at my ancestry traits the other day.
