enroll by december 31 at coveredca.com. ♪ ♪ ♪ this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. >> it's a huge part of our daily lives now. technology, including the ever growing artificial intelligence. but who is really leading the charge, and what happens if those leaders and those companies don't deliver? but afternoon. i am elizabeth cook. today, we are taking a closer look at tech leadership. how it affects not only the actual companies themselves and their workers, but also us, the consumers. first, let's get you caught up on today's news headlines. if there is a bad smell in your neighborhood, this could be where it's coming from. authorities issued a health advisory after flaring at the martinez refinery. people as far west as crockett reported the smell. the company blames the flaring

as some kind of operational incident. health officials urges everyone with respiratory issues to stay indoors with doors closed. the israeli military says three hostages being held by hamas in gaza were killed by friendly fire. the military says the three hostages were mistakenly identified as a threat. the identities released do not include americans remaining unaccounted for. now, this isn't normally something we see in december a brush fire burned on the hillside in pittsburgh overnight. it broke out at about 1:15 this morning after a car caught fire on bailey road and willow avenue. that fire burned nearly 50 acres before firefighters contained it. san francisco giants just formally and bounced their new outfielder, zhang li, 25 year old korean star signing a six year 113 million dollar contract with the team. he was the mvp of the korean league in 2022, and he won five

gold gloves in seven seasons. let's get to our first look at weather now. eric regulators just extended our spare the air alert through sunday. meteorologist darren pack is in our studio with more on that. and with the timing approximately for this next round of rain, which we need, darren. >> we are getting closer, this chance of rain showing up on sunday. in fact, the high resolution models are depicting the first bands on sunday. but they're also showing most of them are likely gonna stay off the coast. technically, yes, we can get some light rain on sunday, but it wouldn't be much. let's look at the system on the wide to get a better handle on it. you can see cut off low, taking its time. it finally comes on short in enough meaningful way that on monday, we've got some widespread rain. and you can see that right here. that's where we are pulling some of the best of what the storm has to offer. at this point it looks like that will be monday morning. and then, another storm comes in, totally separate, distinct system. but with very similar characteristics. and another cut off low, it will sit around for a few days.

it will provide just about as much rain as the first one did. as a result, when we look at the 70, seven day forecast, you're gonna see every day from sunday on a chance of rain. sunday, not much. monday we get about three quarters of an inch. tuesday we add some more. wednesday we add some more. thursday we add some more. it won't rain consistently every day, there will be breaks. but we should start thinking about the very real likelihood that much of next week, we will have rain on it, each day at some point. and it will add up, as we saw, we probably get close to two inches. in the meantime, it's not raining today. if we just look at the daytime highs here, that is for our friday, low to mid 60s. and low to mid 60s in general, pick out your part of the bay here, these are all just about 3 to 5 degrees above average. some of these are even more than that. when we go to near 70 degrees today in the south bay for san jose, you will be sitting close to about ten degrees above average. and then tomorrow is actually the day when it gets a little more. saturday, we've got three or

four degrees warmer. and in fact, let's look at that, in the seven-day forecast, and while we will peek at a pretty nice start to it, with friday and saturday being our two rain free days, it does get quite clouded in the tubes back here for the next several days. the two more impressive days at this point it would be monday, and then likely into wednesday. but that second system, we need a more time to get a little more detail on it. >> all right, sounds good. thank you, darren. technology, including a i, has become such an essential part of our everyday lives. and it seems that it's only gonna grow from here. government leaders agree, but they say there needs to be some safeguards. >> this is on one of the most important issues we face transparency, explainability, copyright, intellectual property. this is one of the keys we have to unlock to let a i move forward. we have to understand why a.i.

systems produced that answers they do. we need the companies to lead the way and help us. this is beyond the ability of us to do. we can set rules and guardrails, but they have to figure out how to. >> now, recent shakeups and tech leadership are raising questions about the huge impact that those individuals who hold so much power. and a new study is shedding light on how founding ceos can impact companies outcomes. joining me live now is one of the people behind that study, the dean of lucas college and graduate school of business at san jose state university. thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. >> thank you so much for having me, liz, pleasure to be here. >> pleasure to see you. how much of a difference does it make to an organization to have a founder, and developer of a technology stay on as leader of that company. is it always a good thing? >> i wouldn't say it's always a good thing, but it's a good thing in many ways. founders, ceos, and

organizations innovation performance, they can enhance it. and this is really important for companies, if you look around, companies like netflix, meta, alphabet, you know, think about and video, all these companies either have founders, ceos at the help. or have founders, ceos closely gauge with working with them. and this is why these companies are so successful. >> now, what if a founder isn't the best leader of a company, then what? how does that impact the company. it can't be good, right? >> it cannot be good. founders, ceos, especially those with a lot of power, are extremely hard to this place. previous research also says that ceos that found the companies are sometimes not the best scale-up leaders for the organizations. however, when they hold a lot of power, it's very difficult to displace them from their jobs. >> now, we are talking about a less than 1% of the population, when it comes to leading these companies, developing, groundbreaking technology. so, how do the headlines of these different changes at the head of these companies impact

everyone else, people who rely on companies like open a.i., chatgpt, or even social media companies like twitter, how does that impact folks who rely on these companies in their everyday lives? >> it is very important for founders, ceos to have a vision because several stakeholders, as you mentioned, are really engaged with the companies. they are really employees, customers. having a founder ceo who is stable, who can set the vision, and who can also show the employees and other stakeholders that the company is beyond them. it is not about their ambitions and they're fulfilling their own personal desires. it's not what the company is about. it's very important for founders ceos to show that. >> so, what role should government really play in all of this. clearly, there should be regulations to be put in place, but given the potential global impact of these companies, should government play a bigger role? or crossed this very fine line? >> i'm not sure, again, i'm not the expert on the role of

government and businesses. but i think governments do have a responsibility. but i also think that responsibility is for the immediate stakeholders, the board of directors, the employees, the people, the other businesses and investors that support the company, they have a huge role to play especially in an emerging technology like a.i., which is still perceived as very volatile and with complications. i think we all have a role to play including the government in that technology, and to help the founder define the mission of the company and lead the company forward so that it benefits us all. >> all right, priya, with san jose state, thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you. it's a pleasure to be here. still ahead, the blue cockpit is laid out and vendors are hoping for a boost in holiday business. the winter destination back open in san francisco. bless -- >> we're gonna go to greet on ice, with all my friends, we are here for a good cause to raise money. we will tell you how you can help. and yes, i did get on skates.

we went to oakland international this morning, and there's this what we saw, travelers facing long lines and more than a little holiday stress. >> we had no clue. we tried to come as early as possible. but this is a bad line. i hope we make it. and i still do. >> we can all relate to that stress. the tsa projects that more than 700,000 travelers will make their way through bay area airports over the next week alone. the coming thursdays and fridays are expected to be especially busy. ♪ ♪ ♪ well, this holiday season and all year around, a lot of the bay area families really need a little help to keep food on the table. today, you have a chance to do your part, while having some fun as well. our reporter is live at greek on ice, with more from bay area families. all right, jules, let's see your moves. >> hello there, liz.

1500 man hours from my pastry department. >> i wonder how many people actually tried to take a bite out of that gingerbread house. it looks really delicious. it will stay open until january 1st. there is still some time to go and check it out. the 49ers recent win certainly have them in the spotlight. and there's one player who never seems to shy away from the camera. ♪ ♪ ♪
