the los angeles coroner has released the toxicology report for matthew perry revealing he died with high levels of ketamine in his body. as much as a person under general anesthesia. the 54-year-old was found unresponsive in his hot tub back on october 28th. the autopsy also found traces of prescription medications used to treat opioid addiction and anxiety. while both were low doses, it was likely a lethal combination mixed with the warm water. >> what i foresee happened with him is what it does is it puts you in kind of a trance state. so he probably was in a hot tub in a trance state, slipped under the water, and drowned. >> perry was receiving ketamine infusions to treat anxiety and depression, but the report says

his last known dose should have been out of his system by the day he died. we have new video of a very close call on a colorado runway. this jet blue pilot had to literally haul tail to avoid a head on collision with a smaller plane descending toward his runway at a tiny regional airport. this happened nearly two years ago, but the footage was just released now. you can see the air bus a320's tail hit the ground. the pilot then made a quick right turn to avoid the incoming plane. they fly so high and for so long, they are essentially living, breathing, weather satellites. tonight how scientists are using these creatures to get a bird's eye view of how our planet warms. >> reporter: they are among the most magnificent birds in the world. >> they have these big wingspans and relatively light body, so they can soar into the

2:21 am
air quality, and climate impacts. it rises as the planet warms during the day and falls at night when temperatures cool. >> if you're really interested in air quality forecasts, weather forecasts, or the changing climate, understanding the dynamics of the boundary layer is critical. and thinking about climb changing and global warming, we're unsure how the boundary layer will change. >> reporter: typically scientists study the layer using ground-based measurements or satellites. but it's expensive and tough to study far flung regions over the oceans. that is, until now. >> that's where the birds really do come in. >> reporter: with a mild adhesive, scientists attached a tiny temporary sensor called a biologger to the tails of several friggat birds. these birds glide for long distances using the pbl as it rises and falls. falls. the tagged birds

had no trouble collecting data in bad weather or night. the hope, as these birds take flight, that the data they gather will help humans develop better strategies to cope with the changing climate. awesome to see the ingenuity that researchers are using to get a better handle on what's happening with the whole climate system. let's focus on our weather the next several days. tomorrow, not much change from today. should be warmer, still dry, and still with that not so great air quality at ground level. but the storm system over the pacific is getting closer and closer over the weekend sending showers into the bay area sunday with more widespread rain arriving sunday night into monday. more on that momentarily. looking outside right now from the mark hopkins hotel. high clouds floating through. a lot of 40s on the map. still clinging to 52 in san francisco. but the high clouds are going to depart, and temperatures will drop to a mix of 30s and 40s to

talk about those rain chances, and let's start with the discussion of atmosphere rivers. we have a little demonstration to go through to refresh your memory on what they mean. this will be the first significant one of the season headed our way. these are narrow channels in the atmosphere that transport a ton of moisture through the atmosphere. narrow on an atmospheric scale. 250 to less than 400 miles across. but the amount of moisture they send through the atmosphere over our heads is equivalent to ten times the amount of water that flows through the mouth of the mississippi river. the interesting stuff for us happens when they encounter land. they hit the coastline, and a couple of things happen. first of all, they hit the coast, and the air slows down because there's friction with land. that contracts horizontally. your shrinking the air pocket in two different
2:25 am
directions, and that squeezes the atmosphere, which squeezes a lot of the moisture out of the atmospheric river, and we see moderate to heavy rainfall across the bay area associated with these systems as they travel through basically the entire west coast. a lot of times it's like a fire hose aimed at one point along the west coast and then transitions farther down the coast. a look at what that means for us in terms of specific rain chances over the next couple of days. we'll look at futurecast here, and we're going to look, hopefully at what's going to happen. drop the map out of the way. and check out futurecast hour by hour with the entire thing headed our way. let's try to get the monitor actually working. there we go. this will be an atmosphere river towards the lower end of the spectrum, but it's sending moisture starting sunday with showers first. you might think okay, we can handle shower activity. but the heavier rain is headed our way sunday night into monday. monday morning's commute will likely be a mess, and we'll see
2:26 am
the afternoon commute likely a mess as the rain comes in waves monday into monday evening. it tapers off into showers monday night into tuesday. then another wave of heavy rain is headed our way tuesday night into wednesday. so it all adds up to a significant amount of rain. anywhere from one and a half to three inches of rain on a widespread basis. some spots picking up three to five inches of rainfall. but again, it's spaced out over the course of several days allowing us to avoid any significant flooding potential. we'll watch the details over the next several days. the one dry day is next friday. ahead in sports, george kittle will be healthy for the 49er, one of the few. and he has a new way of describes his game. plus, the giants are finally opening up the checkboo

around. good things to talk about when it comes to the ninners. big time. they're head hot, but could have their work cut out for themselves on sunday in arizona. i know it seems like a game that might be a bit of a blowout, but they'll be without at least three defensive starters in arizona. linebacker greenlaw and ward are questionable. could have tough. so let's talk about a healthy player. in last sunday's win over the seahawks, the niners attacked with the deep ball, including a 44-yard touchdown to george kittle, and kittle
