mistaken killing of three hostages. the blunt message the u.s. is set to deliver to benjamin netanyahu. and presidential security scare. a car plows into one of the secret service's vehicles guarding president biden. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. a major storm that's pummelling the northeast this morning already brought flooding, wind damage, and even reported tornadoes to the eastern seaboard. over the weekend, parts of florida saw torrential rain and coastal flooding. strong winds pushed ocean water on shore just north of miami. record-breaking rainfall submerged streets in charleston, south carolina. that city seeing more than three inches of rain. that is nearly a month's worth in the span of just hours. it flooded homes and businesses and left drivers stranded in their cars. a reported tornado struck near myrtle beach toppling trees and

damaging homes. this doorbell video in myrtle beach shows the storm hitting a house and ripping a flag pole from the porch. this morning, there are flood alerts stretching all the way from north carolina down to maine with the chance of potentially damaging wind gusts in the northeast. it all comes just days before some of the busiest travel of the year. now to the war in gaza where israel is stepping up its bombardment across the entire territory despite new calls for a truce and restarting hostage talks with the help from qatar. defense secretary lloyd austin arrives in israel today where he's meant to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu and other leaders. the idf investigating the three hostages who were mistakenly killed by soldiers saying it found a sign written on what appeared to be a white sheet asking for help. and another hostage, a 27-year-old woman abducted from the music festival, was killed in gaza.

it's unclear how she died. naomi ruchim joins us now with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the karem shalom crossing at egypt, israel, and gaza reopened this weekend for aid trucks. it's the first time since the war began, and the move is meant to double the amount of food and medicine enter gaza. this comes amid mounting international pressure to protect civilians in the territory. secretary of defense lloyd austin is receiving an update from israeli officials on its war against hamas and pushing for more civilian protections and humanitarian aid for gaza during his trip to tel aviv today. israel has stepped up its attacks in gaza despite growing international calls for a cease-fire, particularly following the accidental killing of three hostages by israeli defense forces. blasts at a united nations-run

school and a maternity and children's hospital over the weekend in southern gaza killed at least six people. and also over the weekend, crowds swarmed and raided trucks carrying much-needed humanitarian aid into gaza. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed to continue his country's fight against hamas while also acknowledging that israel and qatar have restarted talks on the release of hostages. cbs news "60 minutes" spoke with one of the dozens of hostages freed during last month's week-long cease-fire. >> the goal was get me into gaza. showing me off as a trophy. >> reporter: security sources say that both israel and hamas are open to a renewed cease-fire and hostage release, but the holdup involves disagreements on how exactly it would be implemented. qatari officials at the u.n. say a key part of any deal would

likely require a humanitarian pause in the fighting. >> all right. thank you so much. israeli forces say they've now found the largest and longest hamas tunnel to date. this is near gaza's northern border, and they believe hamas used it to prepare for the deadly october 7th attacks. cbs' charlie d'agata and his team crossed into the territory embedded with the idf. >> reporter: for the israelis who worked here, the crossing was a lifeline to palestinians in gaza. but for the hamas terrorists who murdered those israelis as they smashed their way through the border, it was a symbol of occupation. colonel moshe tetro walked us through the ruins of his offices. three of his soldiers were killed here, three others kidnapped. >> three of them were taken captive alive. >> reporter: from here? >> from here. and yesterday while operating -- the rescue operation, two bodies

were recovered. >> reporter: a third soldier remains missing. we were told it was time to move forward. we're passing by on foot through the crossing, that is the israeli side. we're about to enter gaza itself through here. the israeli tanks and troop carriers grinding through the dust, the distant explosions served as a reminder we were crossing into an active war zone. not much more than 500 yards from that border israeli forces uncovered this -- careful here? troops told us it's the largest and longest tunnel they've discovered so far. so the entire tunnel is made of reinforced concrete and steel. you can see the width, you could drive a small car down here. and the depth -- israeli forces say the tunnels were used not only to launch attacks toward israel in that direction but by hamas militants in retreat

taking hostages with them. it runs for more than 2.5 miles and is criss-crossed with smaller tunnels. the challenge -- hunting down hamas while safeguarding the hostages. does that mean fighting hamas fighters inside these tunnels? >> it means hunting them down and finding them wherever they are, inside the tunnels and above the ground. >> reporter: does that carry risk for the hostages being held? >> i think we are managing the risk. we have, first of all, remember the -- rescuing, want to bring the hostages alive back home. it's complex. we want them alive back home. >> reporter: he says once they're satisfied tunnels like this have been searched for hostages, they'll blow them up. snipers kept watch over the horizon during our visit. it's not clear what happens after israel's aim of eliminating hamas is achieved, but it's hard to imagine peaceful palestinians ever using this route to cross over into israel again. charlie d'agata, cbs news, inside gaza.

there was a frightening moment last night as president joe biden was walking out of his campaign headquarters in wilmington, delaware. >> mr. president? why are you losing to trump in the polls? [ inaudible ] >> so here's what you heard there -- a car plowed into a parked suv that was guarding the president's motorcade. the secret service ushered mr. biden into his armored suv. the president and first lady were not hurt. secret service personnel surrounded the car with weapons drawn and told the driver to put his hands up. in a statement the secret service said the crash was accidental, and the driver did not know mr. biden was at the event. a new cbs news poll shows donald trump remains the leading republican presidential nominee

in both iowa and new hampshire. but former ambassador nikki haley is now emerging as the top alternative choice in the granite state. cbs' skyler henry has more on our polling and what this all means. >> reporter: republican voters are showing they're standing behind former president donald trump. new cbs news polling shows his commanding lead as likely caucus-goers in iowa find him to be a strong leader. in new hampshire he's also out in front. but is drawing criticism from president biden and fellow republicans following his comments on immigrants at a rally there on saturday. >> they're poisoning the blood of our country. that's what they've done. they've poisoned mental institutions and prisons, not just in south america, not just the three or four countries that we think about, but all over the world. >> i don't know how you could take someone like that and say that they're fit to be president of the united states. >> reporter: the white house said the comments echoed the grotesque rhetoric of fascists

"the salt lake tribune" reports popular youtube star ruby franke will enter a plea agreement in utah today to multiple counts of child abuse according to her attorney. the mother of six is known for her controversial strict online parenting advice. she and her business partner are accused of abusing and starving two of franke's children. they were arrested in august.

the "sun sentinel" says the florida republican party stripped its chairman of its authority amid a rape allegation. during an emergency meeting yesterday, the party demanded christian ziegler resign. according to police records, the victim had a prior consensual relationship with ziegler and his wife. he's not been charged with a crime and says he is innocent. and "the washington post" says a confederate memorial at arlington national cemetery will be removed this week despite republican opposition. critics say the statue, unveiled in 1914, portrays highly sanitized depictions of slavery. more than 40 republican lawmakers have called for the pentagon to suspend the removal of that monument. virginia's governor says he plans to move it to another location. and still ahead this hour, the possible return of egg-flation. why the demand for eggs could be on the rise sending prices
