news with sara donchey. hello, i'm sara donchey. it poured out there. it calmed down a little bit but the rain is not done with us yet. there is a lot more heading our way. today's rain, though, and wind, caused some damage in the north bay. it was isolated and it happened just before 6:00. an oak tree came crashing down knocking down two utility poles. that blocked a road and power was out nearby for hours. here is a live look at the current outage map. not bad considering how much rain we saw earlier today. you can see scattered out ages in san francisco and then berkeley. today, 18,000 customers lost power down in san jose including this youth center where adult his to escort the kids out with flashlights. it is still showering in parts of the bay area right now. paul heggen watching the radar for us. i know you prepared us for this. it felt like when we were

outside earlier wow, this is real rain >> this is the most significant rain event we have had so far this season associated with atmospheric river and the rain chances are not done with us yet. 48 hours left to go and lingering showers after that point. quite a bit of shower activity. zooming in where the heaviest rain is falling directly over much of napa county including the city of napa itself. spottier heavier downpours as well. all of the activity moving southwest to the northeast. there are showers farther to the south from san francisco down to the peninsula. this is lighter activity. enough to drop puddles in the roads and slow things down at 11:00 at night. more light shower activity moving through the mountains. we will see the same trend continuing over about the next 24 hours or so. pockets of locally heavier rainfall. light to moderate rain moving across the bay area. future cast heading through the rest of the night. showing the bands of showers moving through. nothing in terms of intense rainfall but enough to slow things down

for the morning commute and likely slowing it down. adding up how much rain has fallen so far. two thirds of rain has fallen so far. over an inch and a quarter of an inch of rain over morgan hill. inland, an inch. seeing almost 1 1/2 inches of rain adding up in san francisco and highest amounts farther to the north around san rafael. not on the map, up in elevation a little bit and the amounts go up around the same amount of kentfield and the highest amount is in the santa rosa, two and 3/4s of an inch of rain so far. still seeing more rain continuing to move in heading through tonight and tomorrow with even heavier rain likely by tomorrow night into wednesday. so, the scattered shower activity will give way to another wave of heavier downpours, tracking it with a longer look at future cast. >> a lot to talk about, paul, thank you very much for keeping

track of it all. new, the fight over recalling alameda county leader. community leaders and families of crime victims are plotting their next steps to try to remove price from office. her supporters showed up to defend her. a young mother of a man who died showed up. >> this is my kid. i am sorry i am speaking out, my truth, about my situation. >> reporter: an emotional mom spoke during the q&apportion q&a portion of town hall. her 22-year-old son was killed by a stray bullet inside of an oakland art gallery in 2016. the intended target was shot multiple times and killed nearby. the suspect was charged for both murders under the

previous da in alameda county. just last week at a sentencing hearing, price's office made a deal with the shooter for voluntary manslaughter of the intended target. the murder charge against her son was dropped all together. >> we would expect more empathy and more concern for mothers who have had to put their children in the ground at 22 years of age. innocent victim. >> reporter: she said she was told price's office did not think they could win the case if it went to trial. >> i work hard and why should i have to live with the fact that this person will not be held accountable for his choices. >> she shared the story for the crowd including price supporters who at times interrupted as tensions rose. >> i am not trying to change your mind but you need to hear the truth as well. >> reporter: it comes after the da held a rally with her supporters. she pushed back against criticism that she is

soft on crime. >> we know that this recall is not about public safety. we have their campaign plan. this campaign plan says that they are concerned with the value of their portfolios. real estate developers. there is nobody in here, there is nobody that comes through our office that is a real estate portfolio. >> she referenced a fundraising booklet saying businesses have seen negative impacts to property values as well as personal safety of their employees and their families. the recall campaign leader. >> it clearly says it is a draft that is number one. you know, 13 pages long but you go to page 8 or 9 and picked out one sentence. >> it is all public safety f. she can do her job and keep people safe and performing as a da i don't think we need to come to this stage. >> reporter: they collected more than 80,000 signatures in the last five weeks. needs 30,000 more. it plans to turn

them in ahead of the march deadline and is targeting a special election in april. one of the first people to sign the recall petition. >> i did not vote for her. i can honestly say i was not a supporter from the beginning. this is the choice of the people who decided she needed to be in office. the recall i think needs to occur so we can have a different choice. >> we reached out to price for her comment on the case. we did not hear back. we asked professor james taylor about the politics of this recall. he likened it to two different campaigns. >> the question is, when voters elected pam price as the first popular elected d. a. in over 40 years did they really hear her campaign that she was going to try to be a reformer? do those voters still stay with da price or has the organization

been able to win the argument since she has taken office? >> meanwhile, price has announced tonight the charges she is filing in the shooting death of former police officer. he was killed in oakland in november of 2021 while working as a security guard for a tv news crew in oakland the two suspects in custody will face first-degree murder charges with arming enhancements. that can add an extra year to a 25-life sentence if convicted. his wife, virginia, told us price declined to file special circumstance charges that could of lead to life without parole. we also separately asked price to comment on this case, again, we did not hear a response. oakland has not had a police chief since february. tonight, the mayor's office said it just received a list of candidates from the police commission. the mayor's office did not give us the names of the finalist but told us the mayor can choose the chief through that list or request a new one. we know fired police

chief, armstrong, and retired police chief were among the candidates that the commissioner was considering. we don't know who made the final cut. in san francisco, protesters rallied against charges that 80 people were filed for blocking traffic on the bay bridge during a pro gaza protest t. happened last month in the city. demonstrators stalled bridge traffic for hours and delayed organs that were in transit for transplant. today, hundreds of people gathered outside of the hall of justice calling on the da to drop the charges. >> i feel that what they were participating in as protesters was extremely necessary. the situation in gaza was, you know, very dire. and today it is even more dire. >> jenkins sent us a statement saying free speech can not compromise public safety. dozens of more demonstrators are expected to be arraigned throughout the week. a bay area woman missing for two weeks. tonight, the police say the former rock star

. tonight, the mysterious disappearance of a woman has an east bay police department taking a close look at a former rocker. she was last seen on december 3rd, her family has not heard from her since. they called the police for a welfare check when she did not board a flight to hawaii. the police say her car was found outside of the home of her boyfriend. the police say that her boyfriend has not cooperated with the investigation. he was a founding member of the funk metal band "mr. bungle" he left the band in 2005. days after she vanished he traveled to port land, oregon. he is now

considered a suspect. it is threatening to erupt for weeks. tonight, a volcano has. look at there video. all of this magma spewing out from the ground there. the eruption comes after weeks of earthquakes. 4,000 people have been evacuated. they closed the blue lagoon back in november. nasa's latest lazar experiment took place 19 million miles away from earth. involving a flashing red laser, sort of, see for yourself. this video of a cat playing with a laser pointer was streamed via laser from deep space. the star of the show? an orange tabby named "tators." it was beamed to the

telescope at palomar observetory in san diego county. this is the first time they used a laser from deep space. interesting choice. focusing now on our weather. you know, paul, you had us well prepared for the first round of rain. it was impressive. i know you are talking about the rain falling in the north bay right now. brief periods of this from a true downpour >> what we expected was a wave of heavier rain, showers taking over. it has happened. we anticipate another wave of heavier rain moving in tomorrow night into wednesday. let's add in more locations, filling in the gaps. showing additional amounts, getting closer. now, the numbers go up, going farther up the chart. almost two inches of rain in san rafael and almost two quarters of inch of rain. the rain continues to fall. there is what you need to know looking out from a wet hotel cam rarks

the rain is going to continue. showers are likely as we head through the rest of tonight and during the day on tuesday and then next wave of heavier rain moves in tuesday night into wednesday. eventually the forecast does dry out beginning thursday, especially in the afternoon. showers becoming fewer and farther between. then the sunshine returns for the end of the workweek heading into christmas weekend. checking out the first alert doppler. the loop, continuing to make its way to the northeast. more showers lining up off shore. continuing to move in heading through the night. future cast shows the off and on nature of the showers heading towards tomorrow morning. even in a break for the showers for the morning commute, the roads will be wet. allowing for extra time, extra stopping distance as well. staying in this off and on pattern heading through the day on tuesday. then, the rain getting heavier, steadier, heading through tuesday evening and especially tuesday night into early wednesday. band of heavier rain is when we will add up the most significant amount of rainfall. the

question is, does it shape up exactly like this? the storm system causing it could cause a problem to the west. if we are going to see any flooding threat that is when it will occur. i don't think it will be a threat. but it will be from anything clogged from leaves. you can see the rain tapering off on thursday, off and on showers through the rest of the day. how much more rain? 1-3 inches of total rainfall on top of what we picked up. the rain shadowed spots, one inches, higher elevation in the north bay, santa cruz range, closer to the 2-3 inch ranch. the tropical nature of the moisture headed in. temperatures remaining almost steady since the sun went downright around 60 degrees. we will not drop much through the rest of tonight leveling off in the middle 50s by tomorrow morning. the amount of humidity in the air does not allow the atmosphere to cool off. the

temperatures tomorrow n between showers, are going to warm up to 6 or 7 degrees above average, not seeing a lot of sunshine. the temperatures climbing up into the middle portion ever the 60s around san jose. pretty much across the entire bay area. temperatures topping out around 60 degrees for half moon bay. san francisco, oakland, cooler for the north bay. the temperatures climbing up to around 60 degrees. keep in mind our average highs are in the upper 50s. so, this time of the year it does represent a departure from normal topping out around 60 degrees. a quick check of the dog watching forecast, added the dog walker forecast because we had so many festive dogs sent to us including roscoe who will not get out to show off the santa hat unless he wants it to get wet. more shower activity and the cooler temperatures topping out around 60 degrees. there will not be much difference in temperatures

from spot to spot. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we don't have to show you the difference between the bay and coastal. everybody has the same forecast. the temperatures will be within five degrees of each other for the entire bay area. everyone has the same rain chances, showers on and off tomorrow. heavy on wednesday, tapering off to lighter showers and drying out hitting the end of the workweek. seeing plenty of sunshine for christmas weekend and christmas day itself. the temperatures returning to closer to normal but pleasantly cool in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees for the holiday. >> i had the blow-dryer ready for after the dog walk today. >> that is a good idea. leave a towel ready. >> yes. will do. paul, thank you. christmas is a week away. one charity is making a last minute push to make sure every kid on its list has a present to open. they give out thousands of gift bags to local families every year. with the give away set for saturday they

a little baby owl. they tried to grab it and caught it and release today in the yard. the shocking part, the family has three dogs and they did not notice. a woman noticed a bossom inside of her tree. she freaked out and called a wildlife expert who could not come because it was late. they gave her tips over the phone. got it outside after 30 minutes. she said it was holding on to the tree like a monkey bar. the best part, the tree is fake. it is fake. it did not come with the tree. she decorated the tree the week before. she found the possum. she is sure it snuck in and gravitated towards the tree. >> and sneezed. it had a cold >> you don't want to hear a sneeze when
