millions of americans are assessing the damage one day after a powerful and deadly storm slammed the east coast. and fiery eruption. an iceland volcano finally blows, lighting up the night sky weeks after a series of earthquakes rattled the country. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. and we start with the israel/hamas war and another round of hostage talks in the very early stages. cia director william burns met in poland with his israeli counterpart and qatar's prime minister. it's the first known meeting of the three since the end of a weeks-long cease-fire at the end of november. meanwhile a naval force will protect commercial ships passing through the red sea. this follows a slew of attacks from yemen's houthi rebels. and israelis say they found

cash inside suitcases at the home of a senior hamas member in gaza. cbs's jarred hill is joining us from new york with the latest developments. despite the hostage talks in europe, no sign of an imminent change of the fighting in gaza. and the rerouting in the red sea because of the ship attacks could disrupt oil prices and supply chains. the defense secretary says they've already impacted the global economy. >> reporter: chaos from the israel/hamas war spilling over into international commerce. bp and other oil companies are changing the path in the red sea. u.s. secretary of defense lloyd austin on mound announced a new international coalition to protect the region. >> these attacks are reckless, dangerous, and they violate international law. >> reporter: israel also continues to face threats from hezbollah in lebanon with increased fighting along the border, lebanon launching this israeli rocket on it sight.

israel's military released this footage of its retaliatory strike in syria. it all comes as international pressure mounts on israel to scale back its bombardment of gaza on its war against hamas. >> this is israel's operation, and i'm not here to dictate timelines or terms. >> reporter: though secretary austin said he did do more to fiduciary for protection of israelis and babies. a baby was reportedly among those killed this morning. meanwhile hamas has released the images of three elderly israeli male hostages in what israeli officials condemned as a terror video. the white house says it's working hard to get another deal with israel and hamas, though the leader said they would give no deal until israel ends its strikes.

and six have sent a letter to president biden expressing concern of p.m. benjamin netanyahu's strategy. they argue his strategy isn't in the best interest of israel's security or the security of the united states. back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you, jared. parts of the northeast are under the threat of more flooding this morning after a powerful storm battered the east coast. at least four people were killed, including a man removing debris from his roof in maine when part of the tree fell. hundreds of thousands of people from virginia to maine lost power as nearly 70-mile-per-hour winds toppled power lines. near boston a downed power line ignited a fire when it fell to the roof -- to the ground real estate, and thousands of flights across the country were canceled or delayed ahead of the busy holiday travel week. boston's low kban airport was t the hardest hit. it caused damage here when this

tree came crashing down. roads throughout new jersey were flooded. a high school football field was inundated with water. snow and a whiteout led to a massive pileup on the interstate in kalamazoo. well, texas is stretching the limits on how far it can go in pushes immigration limits. republican governor greg abbott signed a new law yesterday allowing police to arrest migrants suspected of entering the u.s. illegally. it gives local judges the authority to have them leave the country. the new law which takes effect in massachusetts is likely to face new legal challenges. and former president donald trump is drawing fierce criticism for his hateful comments about migrants over the weekend. cbs's ed o'keefe reports from the white house. >> reporter: former president donald trump's comments came saturday night in new hampshire. >> they're poisoning the blood of our country. that's what they've done. they've poisoned mental institutions and prisons all over the world, not just in

south america or three or four countries we think about, but all over the world. >> reporter: president biden's campaign denounced it. the former president also praised authoritarian leaders including hungary's viktor orban, china's xi jinping, and north korea's kim jong-un. cbs news has asked the trump campaign for comment about his reaction to the remarks. among trump's gop opponents only former new jersey governor chris christie rebuked him. >> he's disgusting, and what he's doing is dog-whistling to americans who feel absolutely under stress and strain from the economy and from the conflicts around the world. >> reporter: but trump continues to dominate because gop primary owners back him and immigration.

>> having a border is leading to a lot of problems. it's creating an unsafe environment for our citizens. >> reporter: cbs learned last week the border patrol turned away 7,900 each day. the white house has deepened its conference. they could expel migrants without processing detentions and expanding migrate grant detentions. ed o'keefe, cbs news, the white house. funeral services will be held today in washington for the late supreme court justice sandra day o'connor. the first female justice in history lay in repose yesterday at the supreme court. all nine current justices paid their respects. justice sonia sotomayor said o'connor was a living example that women could take on any challenge. o'connor died earlier this month at the age of 93. in a radical change in policy, pope francis formally

neighboring taiwan says it is willing to provide assistance to china. after weeks of activity, lava has started flowing from a volcano in iceland. the volcano erupted last night about 2.5 miles from a fishing village that was evacuated last month. the town is about 30 miles southwest of the capital reykjavik. so far there's been no disruptions in flights to and from iceland, and scientists say the eruption would likely produce lava, but not an ash cloud. justice clarence thomas faces new pressure and rudy giuliani is being sued again. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "atlanta journal-constitution" reports two former georgia election workers are suing rudy giuliani again for allegedly continuing to spread falsehoods about them. on friday the jury ordered the former attorney for donald trump to pay the mother and daughter $148 million in damages for making false claims they committed election fraud. they claim giuliani is

continuing to spread lies about them. they're not seeking additional damages. they're asking a court to stop them from making the baseless claims. "the washington post" says democratic lawmakers are ramping up pressure on justice clarence thomas to recuse himself in the special election interference case. special counsel jack smith has asked the high court to rule on trump's claims. they say they're concerned about thomas' and to remain impartial after his wife's involvement to overturn the 2020 election results. they also cite the new court's code of conduct. a federal judge issue and order temporarily barring the removal of a confederate memorial at arlington national cemetery. work to remove the memorial started yesterday. it was halted after the restraining order was issued. critics say the statue unveiled in 1914 portrays highly
