and talks at a standstill. israel and hamas both refusing each other's demands for another hostage release. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the holiday season. aaa predicts more than 115 million americans will take to the skies and the roads. so how are things going? cbs' jarred hill is joining us with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we've been checking the boards, and according to flight aware, it's not a bad day for travel when it comes to delays and cancelations. with so many people trying to go somewhere this weekend, watch out for the lines. ♪ some holiday cheer to help ease the headache that can come with holiday travel. >> i don't like flying, and it's crazy during christmas season. >> reporter: aaa expects more than seven million americans to pass through the nation's airports over the next few days.

>> we did anticipate a bit of a crowd in the airport, which is why we wanted to come early. >> reporter: by and large travelers say they've been surprised by how quickly and smoothly the lines have moved. >> i think we'll be able to get through and get something to eat and just be relaxed and have a nice, easy flight. >> reporter: folks lining up for the amtrak at new york's penn station are among the growing number of people aaa says are opting for the train or bus to get where they want to go. >> i prefer planes, but it is convenient. it's cheaper. >> reporter: the vast majority of holiday travelers, nearly 104 million according to aaa, are expected to drive. the moore family has a few tricks for how they've passed the time stuck in traffic. >> sang christmas songs and played on tablets. >> reporter: those traveling out west this holiday season will need to take precautions as storms are rolling through. aaa says tomorrow is probably going to be the busiest day for drivers. speaking of the west coast, flight aware has a misery map where they see the most delays

and cancelations. right now l.a.x. in the middle of all those storms is the most miserable airport. san francisco number two. >> you know, on a good day l.a.x. is questionable. so i can't imagine -- >> reporter: exactly. >> jarred hill in new york, thank you so much. so as mentioned the major storm system is pounding california and arizona. communities in ventura and santa barbara counties were among the hardest hit. flash flooding inundated roads leaving cars stranded with people in need of rescue. in the city of port hueneme, ring camera video caught this flash flood. homeowners were left with water in their homes. about 60 houses all in a senior citizen community had to be evacuated. the flooding risk heads south and east today with flood watches in effect from san diego to phoenix. up to another three inches of rain is expected to fall. overseas now, a deadly mass

shooting at a university campus in prague. the capital of the czech republic, where gun violence is quite rare. at least 14 people were killed when a student opened fire yesterday from the roof of a building just steps from the old town square, a popular tourist destination. police are still looking for a motive but say the 24-year-old shooter killed his father first, and they believe he's responsible for two other murders last week. cbs' elaine cobbe reports. >> reporter: shots fired. [ gunfire ] and chaos erupted mid-afternoon at charles university in central prague. panicked students and faculty ran for their lives. police say the suspected shooter was a 24-year-old student. he took aim from a campus rooftop. sergei medvedev was giving a lecture when the shooting began. >> we barricaded the door. we put all the desks against the door. >> reporter: students were warned to stay put, while some desperately took cover on a

ledge, others jumped to safety. police say at least 14 people were killed, and 25 injured. tell me what did you see? >> yeah, we had the sirens, like four, five gunshots that were very loud. people screaming. people running for cover. >> reporter: joseph hyland and college friends visiting in england were nearby as the attack unfolded. they stayed with harry cranstone who was on crutches. >> it's probably one of the most frightening experiences i'll ever have. >> reporter: video posted on social media appears to show the gunman firing atop a building in the busy historic area filled with tourists and shoppers. s.w.a.t. teams were on site within minutes, sealing off the area and evacuating buildings. a short time later, authorities say they found the shooter dead with a large quantity of ammunition beside him. the interior minister said the death toll could have been much higher. earlier in the day, the gunman's father was found dead, prompting

a search for the student. police received a tip that he wanted to take his own life and was heading to the capital. several european countries have increased security in recent weeks following a spate of attacks. here in france, the threat alert has been raised to its highest level after a knife attack at a school two months ago. elaine cobbe, cbs news, paris. the attack in prague is deepening concern among american intelligence officials about an attack here in the u.s. over the holidays. a recent law enforcement bulletin obtained by cbs news warns the threat of violence by lone actors is likely heightened through the winter months. the bulletin warns of opportunistic attacks on public gatherings, large-scale new year's eve events reportedly among the likely targets. and attempts to broker another cease-fire appear to be at a standstill. hamas says no hostages will be released until israel stops the war, but israel is vowing to continue its bombardment until

hamas is wiped out. new this morning, the hamas-run health ministry is putting the death toll in gaza at more than 20,000, but that figure does not differentiate between hamas fighters and civilians. the u.n. security council is set to vote today on a watered down arab-sponsored resolution for desperately needed aid to get into gaza that the u.s. no supports. -- now supports. and a u.n. report shows more than half a million people in gaza, a quarter of the population, are starving. and only nine of gaza's 36 health facilities are still partially functioning. all located in the south. cbs' imtiaz tyab shows us how how some of the sick and wounded are being airlifted out of the war zone. >> reporter: it's a hospital like no other. a boeing 777 to collect and care for gaza's most desperate. and the need is desperate. according to the w.h.o. after

just 11 weeks of war, only nine out of gaza's 36 hospitals are just barely functioning. these ambulances are a glimmer of hope. on board are the dozens of patients, some so sick a cargo lift had to be used to get them on board. on the flight we met little fatina who still manages a smile for doctors despite a crushed pelvis from an israeli air strike. what do you want the world to know about gaza? "i only ask the world for a cease-fire," she says. as other patients board the mercy flight, some of the smallest can't help but be amazed at the new surroundings, all grateful to be safe. amid the relief exhaustion. some so sick they deteriorate right before our eyes. in total, 132 palestinians were allowed on this sixth mercy mission operated by the uae. near the back of the plane, we

met isra. three of her five children were killed in an israeli strike. she's accompanying her two surviving kids and three others badly injured and orphaned. but the memory of her dead children including twin daughter navine still haunts her. >> she says i'm the moon, i'm like the moon. my name is the moon, and she was really moon. >> reporter: just one of the so many killed in gaza since the war started. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, jerusalem. former trump lawyer rudy giuliani has filed for bankruptcy just days after being ordered to pay $148 million in a defamation case. a jury decided that he must pay damages to two former georgia election workers he defamed by falsely accusing them of helping to rig the 2020 election. giuliani listed nearly $153 million in existing or potential debts.

a norwegian cruise ship temporarily lost power in the north sea after being hit by a massive wave. officials say none of the 400 passengers or crew members suffered serious injuries. the ship was about 120 miles off denmark's west coast when the wave shattered windows on the bridge causing the vessel to lose its abilities to navigate. the ship was towed last night. phone calls of donald trump were made public for the first time showing alleged election interference, and a verdict handed down in the death of a black man in tacoma.

those are some of the headlines in the "morning newsstand." "the seattle times" reports three washington state police officers have been acquitted in the 2020 death of manuel ellis. the 33-year-old was shocked, beaten, and restrained face down on a tacoma sidewalk. the pierce county medical examiner ruled ellis' death a homicide caused by ox event deprivation. lawyers for the after said high level of methamphetamine in his system and a heart irregularity were to blame. the "detroit news" says donald trump pressured canvassers in a michigan county not to certify votes in the 2020 election. according to recorded calls the then-president told two wayne county canvassers they should not sign the official statement of votes. through a spokesperson trump did not dispute a summary of the call when contacted by the newspaper. the revelation comes as trump faces four counts of criminal conspiracy to defraud the u.s. and its voters of the rightful
