counting down to new year's eve and san francisco's big firework show and head of the celebrations, crowds are starting to gather at the san francisco waterfront. bars and restaurants are hoping the slow start will build a big business. we eventually sold out . >> then we get a kids perspective, looking back at 2023 and what they are looking forward to in the new year. good evening and happy new year's eve as we count down the final few hours of 2023 and look forward to 2024. it's midnight in new orleans as the big easy just rang in the new year . never a bad place to go if you are looking to party. 2024 has already advised -- all right in some parts of the world. fireworks in new york city, paris, and hong kong . it's estimated that 1 million people gathered in times square to watch the ball drop

in person. live in the bay area, this is a look at the ferry building were tonight firework show will take place and there is no sign of fog so far which is great news. we will have more details on that in a moment. this is video we shot a few minutes ago , starting to get a little busier ahead of the show as crowds keep building and local businesses hope that they can close at 2023 on a positive note. >> it's not as packed on the waterfront and there is still time and folks are expecting to mind the street as we get closer to midnight. the weather might have played a part in keeping folks home, but many businesses are optimistic that this will still be an eventful evening. family, friends, and coworkers across the city are saying goodbye to 2023 and hello to 2024.

special celebration. we will take a look at the new year's eve forecast in detail and then we look ahead to the next rainmaker gets here tuesday. we have widespread rain for the bay area with your forecast, coming up. the 49ers officially clinched the number one seed with a win over the commanders and we look ahead at their past to the playoffs. the mac cal fire is hoping to inspire young women to one day take of careers in an overwhelmingly male-dominated field. we will be right back.

cal fire is hoping to inspire young women to join the fire service once they are adults. max darrow joins us now to explain. >> the fire service is male-dominated but cal fire wants to encourage young women to consider careers in the fire service so they are asked -- excepting applications for a new program. for five days in shasta or in st. louis abysmal, cal fire hopes to get eckstein to 18-year-old girls a look at what life could be like in the fire service. this is camp sender, a summer camp for girls to learn about and try their hand as firefighters. there's

a lot more to it than only fighting fire. they predominantly learn from female firefighters. >> savanna burchfield says that cal fire puts it on, but women from agencies all over california come to take part in camp sender. >> getting to be part of camp sender to give an opportunity to young women to show that this is a career field that they could be capable of going into , that's important to me and i know it means a lot to the other women involved in this program. >> burchfield says there are not a lot of women in the fire service, 4% of cal fire employees. she says historically it's been geared toward young men, but that that should not be the case. >> there are a lot of strong and capable women in the fire service throughout the country, not just california, and it's a good way for young women to see the this is an opportunity for them and see if it is something they would enjoy.

>> whether they decide to pursue a career or not, burchfield and the rest of the team hope the girls leave camp sender with a sense of empowerment and confidence that they will take wherever they go. the application. is open through january 31st and head to our website if you would like to learn more. let's turn our attention to the weather, with the firework show coming up in less than two hours. let's check in with darren peck to see what to expect. >> let's take a look at the new year's eve forecast. at midnight we have the example for san jose with temperatures by midnight in the mid-to-upper 40s. it's colder for the inland valleys and santa rosa numbers are low to mid 40s and you may not have to get a lot colder for the morning low. new year's eve is fine. if we take a look ahead tomorrow, i want you to see the blue sky . we had a great day, today.

isolated showers came east bay into the early evening tonight. don't be surprised when you wake up tomorrow on new year's day and you have blue sky as far as you can see. the whole bay area will have that in the future cast and is nothing up here. that's from the next weather maker coming our way. that's the headline, by the way. one other thing about new year's eve, we have a weak offshore breeze through the bay, so even as those higher clouds come around , rain had been around. we clear out any of those low-lying marine layers and you should have beautifully clear skies midnight tonight. to go along with that sky on monday for new year's day, we have daytime highs in the upper 50s to around 60. we will show you the storm coming our way for tuesday and

widespread rain across the rest of the bay and that gets us into sunset, 7:00. those are some of the more impressive widespread steady rain and that's only phase one because once we get past tuesday night and into wednesday, phase two shows up and that comes in for wednesday was on and off again showers and occasional thunderstorms and that is the center of the storm . there's more instability, more energy but you don't get that widespread steady rain but instead you get isolated and occasional pop up downpours with maybe even a thunderstorm mixed in for wednesday. when you add those sides of the storm together , you get a decent amount of rain and you could see as much as an inch of rain in total by the time we get through with the system on thursday. look across the sierra, you can see more snow

and the majority of it will fall wednesday and it will be a difficult travel day for anyone getting across. in the forecast, you can see rain tuesday and wednesday with a break thursday and the next system comes in friday and into saturday with another rainmaker but it's a little too early to get specific on that, but we keep a close eye on it and we will eat you as we get closer. coming up next, bay area food banks are making one last push before the new year to get the supplies they need for 2024 and we will tell you how you can help and we will

is the end of the year and local food banks are almost out of time to meet their goals for the year. every dollar matters especially tonight. you can see just how much each region's food bank is the only, so they didn't have to serve smaller portions or turn people away. a number of foundations have been doubling or tripling donations but that expires at midnight tonight. >> for every dollar we spend we distribute three dollars worth of food. who wouldn't want that kind of investment? food banks across the bay area , everyone

the 49ers took care of took care of business today and got help from a divisional rival to lock up the number one seed in the nfc. let's go to vern with details. >> nfl laptop and the 49ers, knocking them off the nfc's top . it was a week before the end of the regular season thanks to another game that went their way. here's brock party with a bounce back to boone after a four interception game against the ravens. here is a flip to samuel and no one stopped him! 30th touchdown pass and they jumped out to a 10-0 lead but had some fight in the second quarter. they snatched it in the end zone and rallied to

meantime, the eagles, jalen hurts , rising up at home . james conner crashed in with 33 seconds left to give arizona the lead. it's a heavy favorite , with a hail mary pass in the end zone and it was intercepted! 35-31, with that loss giving the top seed to san francisco. >> if you watch those final seconds ? to have that kind of moment, watching tv clips and stuff , watching and celebrating another team win, so for us to be able to do that i was taking it in my command, this is something i've seen on tv going -- growing up. it was special.

awesome. you get that a lot. >> they call it happy new -- noon year, because at noon, the balloons dropped and everyone celebrates the beginning of a brand-new year. at the time for new beginnings for young and old. oliver and his buddies reflected on the old year and hopes for the year to come. >> did you like the year that's ending now? >> yeah. >> why? back because i had fun with my friends. i hope it's just as good or better. make new friends, have a new class next year. >> michaela allen is only six, but she accomplished big things this year. >> because i made new friends and i also got more smart.

>> making new friends is a big deal the kids and michaela's dad thinks they tend to be more optimistic because they focus on what's ahead. adults are often grumpier at the end of the year because they look at the past. >> a lot of it is you are trying to get to that next point, oh i'm glad i have that done and yeah, i feel like they are much more focus on oh i did this, it was fun i did that it was fun , without a lot of difference between the new year and the old year, just yapping >> henry and his dad explained that children can see the good in a year because just about everything they do is new and exciting. >> when you try something new for the first time but then you'll never feel the same way again when you do it again. >> i think the adults focus on the bad and getting rid of it and the kids focus on everything good.
