from confetti to midnight kisses, we'll show you the celebrations. red sea attack. the u.s. navy sinks three houthi boats after the iranian-backed rebels tried to hijack a container ship. jeremy renner's surprise appearance. how the actor thanked the first responders who saved his life after a snowplow accident. good morning and happy new year. i'm charissa lawson in for anne-marie green. at the stroke of midnight, we rang in 2024. festivities in new york's times square went off without any trouble, with hundreds of thousands of revelers packing the streets. wendy gillette reports on the celebrations and the security. >> three, two, one! >> reporter: the waterford crystal ball descended from a pole high above times square, ringing in 2024. couples kissed and celebrated, showered by 3,000 pounds of confetti dropped from the buildings above. security was tighter this year,

in part because of israel's war against hamas. >> free palestine! >> reporter: nypd kept a protest in support of palestinians far away from times square. >> free free free palestine! >> reporter: there were demonstrations in chicago, boston, and other cities around the world. part of this year's security measures here in new york city included an expanded perimeter, stretching more than a mile from central park. for the first time, nypd launched drones to patrol street by street. >> this is a combination of everybody working together as one city, one mission, one goal. that's to keep everybody safe. >> reporter: revelers we talked to say they felt secure. >> there's policemen everywhere. i really, really feel safe. >> reporter: celebrations across the globe unfolded without incident. fireworks lit up the sky across asia, and there were colorful displays throughout europe including over the acropolis in

athens, greece, and london's big ben. all of the festivities bringing hope for a new year of happiness. wendy gillette, cbs news, new york. now to the middle east where the u.s. sank at least three boats they say were waging an attack on a container ship. it happened in the red sea along one of the world's busiest shipping routes. a container ship issued a distress call yesterday saying it was under attack by houthi militants in four boats. u.s. navy helicopters from the aircraft carrier "eisenhower" and "uss gravely" responded, returning fire. they sank three of the boats. the houthis acknowledge ten of their fighters were killed. escalating tension in the red sea is part of a spillover from the israel/hamas war. yesterday israeli strikes in central gaza killed 35 people, according to hospital officials there. cbs' ian lee is on the front lines of the conflict. >> reporter: paramedics arrive on the scene of an artillery

strike in khan younis. "move quickly, there's a boy," shouts the ambulance driver. the boy moves amidst the rubble, alive but injured. they quickly bring a stretcher and haul him off. the war in gaza has transformed its hospitals. people gather for information or hoping to find safety. the injured seek life-saving treatment. but now gaza's largest hospital has a new addition. a cemetery. hundreds of graves line the courtyard of al shifa. signs bear the names of the men, women, and children killed in the fighting since october. over 21,800 have died, according to the hamas-run ministry of health. the idf has intensified its operations in recent days. going building by building, street by street, after hamas militants. destroying tunnels and hoping to rescue hostages seized by fighters on october 7th.

as the year wraps up, some harbor hopes for the future. "i wish to go back to normal, for electricity to return, and to go home," says this boy. for 12-year-old mouna alsawa, even a return to the mundane seems special. she says she wants to return home and run errands again. in tel aviv, some expressed the need to end the fighting. >> in order to release these hostages, a cease-fire must be taking place. >> reporter: for now, the war grinds on. ian lee, cbs news, tel aviv. the israel/hamas war and the war in ukraine are top priorities for president biden as he begins his new year. cbs' skyler henry is traveling with the president in the u.s. virgin islands. >> reporter: president biden staying in close contact this weekend with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy, with western military aid stalled and

kyiv running low on supplies as it defends itself from russian aggression. the biden administration is urging congress to take action and give more funding to ukraine. >> we believe that they can be successful in this conflict, that they can win, and they can push russian forces out of ukraine. but what they've got to have, additional resources. >> reporter: republican lawmakers on capitol hill say aid to both ukraine and israel hinges on beefing up assets and sweeping policy changes along the u.s. southern border. more than 300 migrants landed in rockford, illinois, before being bussed to chicago, one of the major cities concerned about federal resources as they deal with an overflow of asylum seekers. >> what we have is clearly an international and federal crisis that local governments are being asked to subsidize. and this is unsustainable. >> reporter: u.s. officials signal they're on track to process a record-breaking more than 300,000 migrants crossing into the country in just december alone. though the number of

year's fireworks from around the globe. janeiro, brazil. fireworks lit up the night sky. thousands of people were at copacabana beach to watch the show which took place over the water. people in dubai marked the year with an impressive light show and pyrotechnics display. it took place at the world's tallest building. the show featured state-of-the-art technology. it projected thousands of shapes and colors into the night sky. back home, new year means new laws are taking effect across several states. as cbs' elise preston reports, some of these laws will affect many americans. >> reporter: nearly 10 million americans -- many of them working in fast food, child care, and housekeeping -- will be getting a significant bump in pay tomorrow. 85 cities and states across the country are boosting their minimum wage in 2024. some as high as $20.29 an hour. far exceeding the current

federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. that adds an estimated $7 billion a year in pay for those workers. in california, it will be illegal to carry a gun in most public places, even with a concealed carry permit. new jersey and minnesota are trying to reduce period poverty by mandating that public schools provide free menstrual products. porch pirates beware. anyone caught stealing packages left outside in pennsylvania could now face felony charges. in florida, residents can reserve a campsite a month before nonresidents. and in illinois, if you happen to have a bear or a primate, keep them to yourself since it's illegal for the public to come in contact with them. a california tradition will no longer be a crime. lowriders and other drivers will be allowed to cruise on public

streets. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. actor jeremy renner is looking back on 2023 with gratitude after surviving a snowplow accident one year ago today. the two-time oscar nominee visited a reno, nevada, hospital to thank the staff for saving his life. on friday, he arrived at the renowned regional medical center with pizza for everyone and posed for pictures with young fans. renner underwent multiple surgeries after being crushed by his seven-ton snowplow at his nevada home, but look at him now. coming up, moviegoers went out for "wonka." the sweet movie that took over the holiday box office.th day bo. they set things in motion and make us happy or sad. but there's one word that stands out, because when people say it, lives are changed. it's not a big word. it's itsy bitsy. it's only three little letters.
