donchey, the new year is off to a rough start, this train derailed around 9:00 this morning, nine people were hurt and there are a lot of questions about how it happened and how long it will take for everything to be back up and running the flames shot out from the train forcing passengers to scramble to safety. bart says it happened in what they described as an interlocking, basically, a junction of two sets of tracks. they have a computer system. it is supposed to set the track alignment. the train keeps going straight or veers off to the other side of the tracks. there was some problem with that system. that is the part that is still being sorted out. max kicks off our team coverage and found that thankfully there may be less danger to b.a.r.t's equipment than initially feared. >> reporter: crews will work through the night to find out what happened. they felt like they had had to run for their

lives.. this was the aftermath of antioch-bound train on new year's day. the passengers say the train came to a stop. they heard pops and then saw smoke and flames. >> i thought we were going to blow up. i thought we were going to die >> you know when a car smokes and we did not want it to happen so we ran for our lives, really. >> reporter: the cause is officially under investigation b.a.r.t spokesperson says that the operations control center that can usually remotely move the tracks was not able to do so. >> they directed the train operator to stop the train and manually move the track into the alignment. the train operator got off of the train, got back on the train and when it began to move that is when the derailment occurred. >> reporter: i asked him if it

was operator error. >> it is too early to say but that is among the possibilities we are looking into. >> reporter: it is standard protocol for b.a.r.t pd to investigate. the safety department will as well. >> they will do things like talk to the train operator, do the standard drug testing and then the california public utility's commission, they were out here earlier, they will do an investigation and look into things as well. >> reporter: the train was not moving that fast at the time of the accident says the b.a.r.t director, the fire sparked because of the train cars hitting the third rail. nine people were taken to the hospital >> we had to jump out on to the tracks on the side. it was scary. >> reporter: we are told the nine people who were transported to the hospital are all expected to be okay. >> crews are doing their best to make sure they can have the track ready to some capacity that it can be up and running tomorrow morning. a lot is still up in the air. >> reporter: b.a.r.t officials say they are hopeful that at

least some train operations will resume on tuesday morning. it is unclear, though, exactly when they hope to have full operations back up and running. making for what could be a more complicated commute for some on tuesday morning. >> reporter: after derailing at 9:00 a.m. monday morning a crane finally arrived on the scene around 4:30 on monday night to move the derailed train and get it towed away from the scene. in all, the process of clearing the tracks will take around six hours. >> once the derailed car is back on the tracks they will attempt to tow it back to concord yard and began the track inspections and any repairs that are necessary to safely resume service. >> reporter: officials say they are prepared to be out at the scene all night. >> we typically do maintenance in the overnight hours so we have all of the equipment to do

repairs and inspection at night. >> reporter: they hope to have single train service through the morning. still encouraging anyone planning to take b.a.r.t on tuesday to check their website for the latest updates before heading out. >> obviously we will work throughout the night to update it and keep it updated. i can not tell you at 4:30 or 5:00 tonight if we will have service tomorrow. we will return to service as soon as it is safe to do so. >> reporter: buses will continue to be available for passengers to ride between the walnut creek station and the rockridge station. now, the two left lanes of highway 24 here were shutdown while this crane moved that derailed train. the officials say they expect both of those lanes to reopen overnight and they are not expecting any other traffic impacts with this incident. >> all right, kelsi, thank you.

stay with us for the latest on the information, we are monitoring the repairs and we will have more starts at 5:00 on our morning edition. after a pleasant start to the new year we got more rain heading into the bay area. our chief meteorologist joins us with a look at what to expect. paul you said the timing of this is not the morning commute but maybe the afternoon commute? >> that is why tomorrow is a first alert weather day. it is not life-threatening weather but it will hurt the commute. it is blank for the first half of the day. the rain will be rolling in tomorrow afternoon. this band on the radar simulation is what we call a narrow cold frontal rainband. that brings in the heaviest rain and the gustiest wind and rolling across the bay area during the afternoon and evening commute. how much rain are we talking about overall? let's look at the numbers with a sense of maybe the low and high end of the range of

expectation. in general looking at half an inch to an inch of rainfall across the bay area. san goas a the boom numbers, close to an inch of rain. bus number, a quarter of an inch. that gives you a sense of if the system under achieves or overachieves. it is a possibility for other parts of the bay area as well. concord could pick up an inch of rain. more likely 6/10th of an inch of rainfall with similar amounts elsewhere in the east bay for the inland parts of the east bay. san francisco, expecting an inch of total rain. could get up to 1 1/2 inches if the cold rainband drops rain in a short amount of time and heavier amounts for the north bay as always expecting more rain to accumulate there. close to an inch. that is the expectation, if the system, maybe, slows down a little bit and drops more rain we can pick up two inches of rain. there is a possibility of minor street flooding during the heaviest rain. that is going to be around drive time tomorrow afternoon and evening. taking a longer look ahead for future cast and how long it will last

coming up in a few minutes >> thank you, paul. a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in western japan left the region in ruins, buildings, collapsed roads, damage to 45,000 homes and they are without power. eight people are confirmed dead but the number could rise.. >> it had had a depth of 6 miles, it triggered tsunami warnings along the western coast. cameras captured what it looked like and felt like as the quake hit at 4:00 in the afternoon on a holiday. people ducking for cover and for a moment just stunned and seemingly in disbelief. >> people there have felt earthquakes probably over the years but this is, to my knowledge, the biggest earthquake by far. people don't have experience with a earthquake this size. >> search and rescue operations are now underway. officials are warning that more major quakes can hit the area over the next couple of days. it is the end of an era in

. one person died this morning at a fireworks mishap on treasure island. >> there was a group of people setting off fireworks. people at the scene told us they lit the fuse on a firework that was not supposed to go off. the officers tried to perform first aid but the man died from his

injuries. the. the bay area district is investigating the chevron refinery after a flaring on new year's eve. they received six complaints from the flaring coming from that facility this weekend. we reached out to chevron for comment. a spokesperson for the refinery said in part. the flaring as a result of what they called as a process upset. the statement goes on to say flares is an important part of keeping the refinery running safely by relieving pressure during the refining process. this comes less than a week after a surprise inspection at the martinez refining company. that inspection last tuesday resulted in a meeting between county supervisors and refinery management. the health department says that over the last year there have been 21 spills at that refinery and 46 flaring incidents. >> it is the end of an era for a beloved cafe in berkeley. home made cafe is closing its

doors after 45 years of business. everybody can get fed, even those that could not pay for it. people showed up on this new year's day to say good-bye and have their last meal. it ran a nonprofit program called everybody eats. it gave out free breakfast for people who could not afford it. the meals were paid for with customer donations. he held out as long as he could. >> because of, you know, changing economies there is no more one-more income families, harder for people to eat monday through friday which you need to do. the weekends can take care of something but not everything. >> reporter: his business is not done. he hopes to reinvent his everybody eats program in the community but for now, he is going to take just a little bit of a break. we got more rain coming into the forecast. it was a beautiful day today. let's go ahead and get details from our

meteorologist paul heggen about the storm coming tomorrow. >> the good news, the bad news, good news, morning commute looks fine weatherwise as everyone heads back to work. the problem will be in the afternoon and evening when the heavier rain is rolling in. tonight, patchy fog. not the widespread fog to begin the day today if you were up early enough. always a big question on the holiday. rain and wind on the way tuesday afternoon and evening including around the peak of rush hour. another chance of rain is in the forecast later this week. let's get into the details starting with how the rain is going to behave. just a chance of a few sprinkles, lighter shade of green evaporating on the way down for the most part the heavier rain will be moving in. talking about the narrow cold front, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds around the peak of rush hour. late tuesday evening with the heavier downpours continuing for a couple of hours. pushing off to

the east, fairly quickly, fast enough that we should be able to avoid flooding threat, minor street flooding possible or the storm drains are blocked and down to lingering showers as we head through the rest of tuesday night and start the day on wednesday. but, the forecast data indicates withy should be drying out by the time we hit wednesday afternoon and we will be seeing the winds backing down quickly as well. just a narrow window of time when the gusty winds will occur. how much rain? generally half an inch to an inch of total rainfall. we see some purple here indicating higher elevations of the north bay. better chance of adding up an inch and a half of total rain. how fast the rainfalls and narrow window of time maximizes the potential for an even minor flooding potential. we are looking at half an inch to an inch farther south. in the rain shadow of the valley. you should pick up half an inch of rainfall around san jose. in terms of snow. it will be a snow maker for the sierra. but,

the snow -- line will be seven feet. the highest elevations going farther and farther up picking up 12 inches of snow and gusts to 40 miles an hour. winter gust advisory for much of the day on wednesday and travel on u.s. 50 and i-80 is tricky. they are likely to add up snow farther down-the-line. the next round of rain and snow for the sierra, showers on friday. i think it is heavier rain moving in on saturday. we will keep you updated on that once the next system is out of the way. right now, calm conditions across the entire bay area. the temperatures are a mix of 40s and 50s, ending up in the lower to middle 50s to start the day tomorrow. close to normal for this time of the year. despite the increase in cloud cover, the temperatures will warm up, good weather in the forecast to start the day. because he is in brentwood he has to wake longer for the rain to arrive. it means more walking time and not needing the january flannel with a few degrees above average. taking a

quick look at the high temperatures, again, few degrees or several degrees above normal in the middle 60s in san jose. lower 60s for most of the bay area. peninsula, lower 60s and hitting 60 at half moon bay and san francisco. cooler temperatures, rain arrives in the upper 50s for most of the north bay. a degree or two of what is above normal for this time of the year. seven-day forecast, this is for the whole bay area, another scenario, no variation from coastal to inland locations, temperatures returning closer to normal. wednesday, thursday, continuing the trend as we finish the workweek. showers on friday, looks like it will be light activity. widespread rain in the forecast to start the weekend. we dry things out for the second half of the weekend as everyone tries to take down the holiday decorations. >> i will hold you to that. starting the new year with prestige, we take you to the tournament of roses parade. ahead in sports the regular
