>> i want to start with good news. the tsunami warning was lifted in japan, but this is still a dangerous situation. there are concerns about the stability of the buildings left behind. cleanup and rescue efforts are underway in western japan as shocking new images show the extent of the damage from yesterday's strong earthquakes. the series of about 20 quakes struck after 4:00 p.m. local time on new year's day, the % strongest measuring at a magnitude of 7.6. the violent tremors caused buildings to collapse, roads to split, sparked raging fires, and triggered massive waves and tsunami warnings. >> the whole room was shaking. the tv was shaking. it was quite scary. >> thousands of people were visiting shrines and temples, a new year's day tradition, when the ground started to shake. >> at first i just was stined. >> american tv producer and japan resident daniel smith said he was visiting this shrine when the quakes began.
