israel says it will defend itself against charges of genocide before the u.n.'s top court at the hague. south africa launched the case friday. cbs' jarred hill starts us off this morning here in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that hamas leader was wanted by both israel and the u.s. now as you mentioned, there are concerns that his killing could escalate tensions in the region. these are the smoldering remains from a drone strike that killed a senior hamas leader, saleh al arouri, founder of the terror group's military wing and several other militants dead in beirut. this man heard the explosion caused by the strike and ran toward it. he described seeing body parts on the ground in the aftermath. saleh al arouri's killing sparked protests in the west bank overnight as concerns increased that the conflict could spill over to neighboring regions. in lebanon, hezbollah leaders have threatened a severe reaction, while lebanese officials say the strike violates their sovereignty.

overnight israel's military released video of strikes carried out against hezbollah targets in lebanon. israeli defense officials say they're prepared for any scenario that they remain focused on the fight against hamas. the hamas-run gaza health ministry says more than a dozen palestinian civilians including a baby were killed in israeli strikes on the refugee camp and the khan younis headquarters of the red crescent society, a humanitarian organization. >> no child should be killed let alone one sheltering under the humanitarian organization. >> reporter: in the red city, tensions high yesterday as yemen-based houthi rebels fired two anti-ship missiles, though the u.s. says they didn't cause any damage. the hearing regarding those genocide charges against israel is reportedly set for next week. unrelated, anne-marie, yesterday the u.s. state department condemned comments from two israeli ministers who'd advocated for palestinians to be resettled outside of gaza. >> thank you.

now japan dealing with a double disaster. as investigators search for answers in that fiery plane collision, the human toll from the series of powerful earthquakes is just coming into focus. at least 62 people are dead, and officials fear that number will rise as rescue workers scour the rubble searching for any signs of life. as for that japan airlines collision, the question -- what was a coast guard plane doing on the same runway as a passenger jet was coming in for landing. cbs' elizabeth palmer has that story from tokyo. >> reporter: first you see an explosion far down the runway, then the japan airlines airbus comes into view trailing sparks and flame. video from inside the cabin showed relative calm. outside, fire was engulfing the aircraft. pictures posted on social media show passengers escaping on

evacuation slides and then running for their lives. incredibly, all 379 people on board got out. [ speaking in a global language ] "i saw the fire in the engine," he said, "but only when we got away from the plane did i see how fast the flames were spreading." "i can only say it was a miracle," said this man. "if we hadn't got out right then we could all have died." as the airbus burned out of control, authorities said it had collided on the runway with a smaller plane belonging to japan's coast guard. five of the six crew members were killed. in a tragic twist, they'd been on their way to another disaster -- to bring relief supplies to ishikawa in western japan. the area devastated on new year's day by a powerful earthquake. the scale of the damage in this relatively remote area is becoming clear. many older wooden houses not

built to modern earthquake-proof standards simply collapsed. whole neighborhoods disintegrated. and now rescuers are racing the clock fighting mudslides, wrecked roads, and strong aftershocks to find anyone who may still be alive but trapped in the ruins. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, tokyo. donald trump is appealing the decision that would keep him off maine's primary ballot. last month maine's secretary of state disqualified the former president because of his alleged role in the january 6th capitol attack. trump is also expected to appeal a similar ruling in colorado to the u.s. supreme court. new jersey democratic senator bob menendez is facing new allegations. this time for allegedly using his influence to help the nation of qatar. federal authorities say menendez accepted expensive gifts in exchange for making favorable comments about qatar. menendez has pleaded not guilty

to taking bribes to help egypt's government. and the u.s. will reopen four legal southern border crossings with mexico tomorrow. authorities say the crossings at eagle pass, texas, near san diego, and two in arizona will resume operations because high levels of illegal immigration have decreased and freed up personnel. border officials struggled last month to process migrants as apprehensions topped 10,000 on several days. and now to the shakeup at harvard. the president, claudine gay, resigned amid a firestorm of controversy. she's been under intense scrutiny since her congressional testimony about anti-semitism on campus. she faced growing accusations of plagiarism. cbs' nikole killion has the story. >> reporter: six months into her tenure, harvard university president claudine gay announced she's resigning so that our community can navigate this moment of extraordinary challenge. gay's resignation comes nearly a month after she and the

"the democrat and chronicle" says two people killed in the new year's day crash in rochester have been identified as 29-year-old joshua orr and 28-year-old justina hughes. they were passengers in a ride-hail vehicle that was hit by another suv loaded with gas cans. investigators say that driver, michael avery, intentionally drove into pedestrians after a concert, but there's no evidence of terrorism.

police released photos of avery buying gas canisters before the crash. he may have suffered from undiagnosed mental health problems. and the "associated press" reports on new audio of the police shootout with a gunman during last month's shooting at unlv.
