the motive that police say led to the killings. documents unsealed. the long-awaited jeffrey epstein-related court material is out. what they reveal. >> first, the crisis at the border. the showdown over how to crack down on the influx of migrants crossing into the united states. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the biden administration is in two political stand interviews, one with the state of texas, the other with republicans. more than 60 republican lawmakers traveled to the border yesterday for a firsthand look at the situation. it comes as the number of migrants crossing into the u.s. have dropped compared to record highs weeks ago. cbs' jarred hill now with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. for context here, u.s. officials attribute those lower border crossing numbers to historical trend of fewer people crossing during the holidays, plus increased enforcement by mexico.

still, you got communities around the country and lawmakers in washington scrambling to find more permanent solutions. in a battle over border policy, the biden administration is now suing to block a texas law that allows state and local law enforcement to arrest and deport people suspected of crossing the border illegally. it comes as the white house and congress remain at a standstill over legislation that would include border security. yesterday republican house speaker mike johnson led a group of gop lawmakers to eagle pass, texas, to get an up-close look at the crisis. >> america is at a breaking point. >> reporter: while there, a group of migrants from venezuela were seen trying to cross into the u.s. in a sit-down with cbs news' margaret brennan, johnson later urged president biden to exercise executive academies. >> the catch and release program has created part of this problem. you could end catch and release. >> it's nice that they have a trip to the border, but the only way to solve this is here working in a bipartisan way. >> reporter: on capitol hill,

negotiations continued toward a package that would include immigration measures and security funding for israel and ukraine. president biden sent his top cabinet officials to mexico just last week to discuss the issue. this week he also placed blame on republicans in congress. >> they ought to give me the money i need to protect the border. >> reporter: new border patrol numbers have dropped from highs of 10,000 apprehension per day to 4,000 on tuesday. a senior white house official told cbs news that nothing is completely off the table regarding any executive actions at the border. but they also say they're looking for more help from mexico to deal with there crisis that is impacting the entire hemisphere. >> all right, jarred hill in new york. thank you. coming up on "cbs mornings," we talk with homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas about the border crisis and if a funding deal can be reached. breaking overnight, a father and son have been arrested in connection with the murders of a

pregnant texas teenager and her boyfriend. san antonio police say 19-year-old christopher preciado is facing a capital murder charge. his father, ramon preciado, is facing a charge of abuse of a corpse for allegedly moving the bodies to another location. savanah soto and matthew guerra went missing just before she was scheduled to have labor induced. police say it appears to be a drug deal gone bad. overseas now, the growing tensions in the middle east. two explosions killed nearly 100 in iran at a ceremony honoring a top iranian general who was killed in a u.s. drone strike in 2020. while no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, iran's leaders vow to punish those responsible. the story from cbs' ian lee. >> reporter: blood, panic, and chaos after twin bombings in iran today. scores of people were killed when the explosions ripped through a procession near the

tomb of iranian general qasem soleimani. videos of the nation's deadliest bombing in more than 40 years showed bodies lying on the road. no one has yet claimed responsibility. the state department condemned the attack. >> number one, the united states was not involved in any way. and any suggestion to the contrary is ridiculous. and number two, we have no reason to believe that israel was involved in this explosion. >> reporter: iran has had long conflicts with i.s.i.s. and arab separatists that have carried out similar attacks in recent years. iranian officials told state media the bags carrying the bombs appear to have been detonated by remote control. qasem soleimani was a feared member of the revolutionary guard corps. ray a u.s. drone strike killed him in 2020. thousands gathered on the anniversary of his death when state media reports the first bomb detonated. a second bomb exploded 15

minutes later targeting people fleeing the first. iran's supreme leader vowed the terrorist attack would be met with a harsh response. ian lee, cbs news, tel aviv. israel remains on high alert along its northern border with lebanon following tuesday's strike in beirut that killed a senior hamas leader. hezbollah promised revenge for the killing of saleh al arouri. israel has refused to say whether or not it carried out the attack, but the chief vowed to hunt down every hamas member involved in the october 7th massacre no matter where they are. meanwhile, the u.s. is calling on the u.n. security council to take urgent action against yemen's houthi rebels for attacking ships in the red sea. the idf confirmed the death of another hostage in captivity. sahar baruch was killed during a failed rescue attempt last month. the military says it's unknown if he was killed by hamas or israeli gunfire.

and we are learning the mother and american uncle of a u.s. service member were rescued in gaza during a secret operation coordinated by the u.s., israel, egypt, and others. some of the long-awaited secret court documents related to late sex offender jeffrey epstein have been unsealed. they contain mostly already public material including transcripts and interviews with some of epstein's victims. there are mentions of epstein' past friendships with bill clinton and donald trump who were not accused of wrong doing and prince andrew. in one deposition a victim said epstein told her one time that clinton likes them young, referring to girls. former president donald trump is asking the u.s. supreme court to overturn a colorado ruling that keeps him off a state's presidential primary ballot. last month colorado's supreme court ruled trump violated an insurrection clause in the constitution's 14th amendment because of his alleged role in the january 6th capitol attack.

on tuesday, trump filed a similar appeal to maine court to keep him on the ballot in that state. and parts of the northeast are bracing for their first big snowstorm in two years. this could be a prelude to what they are in for. the video comes from shaver lake, california, that got up to a foot of snow yesterday. it's the same system moving east. saturday the snow arrives in the northeast and will linger into sunday. the heaviest snowfall is expected away from the coast, though, where some areas could see more than a half a foot. folks along the coast should expect strong winds with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. more u.s. hospitals are requiring masks and limiting visitors as health officials say an expected but still nasty post-holiday spike in flu, covid-19, and other illnesses. 31 states and washington, d.c., report high or very high levels of flu-like illnesses. janet shamlian reports from the hard-hit state of texas. >> reporter: 3-month-old reece

prater's hospitalized more than 300 miles from home at cook children's medical center in fort worth, texas. it was the closest intensive care bed available. >> he was on oxygen almost immediately when we got to the hospital. his breathing was quickly getting worse and heavier. >> reporter: prater has rsv. back home in amarillo, his 3-year-old brother is sick with the flu. cases like theirs overwhelming children's hospitals. >> in the past 24 hours our emergency rooms and urgent cares have seen over 600 kids. that's a kid checked in every two minutes to be seen by a provider. >> reporter: it's not just texas. across the country, there were more than 73,000 flu hospitalizations and more than 4,500 deaths including 20 children. but fewer than half of children received this year's flu vaccine, the lowest in five years. rsv infections are dropping, but

and ask about attr-cm. new information about that fiery collision on a tokyo runway. a transcript of communication between air traffic control and the planes shots the japan airlines jet had permission to land on the runway. the coast guard plane was told to taxi to a holding point. all 379 people on board the passenger plane survived. five of the six people on the coast guard plane were killed. an imam gunned down outside his new jersey mask, and a house fire that claimed the lives of four young children. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports four siblings died in a connecticut house fire. the flames broke out tuesday night in a two-family home in the town of somers. the children ranging in age from 5 to 12. three other children including a 19-year-old escaped by jumping from the second floor. officials say the mother was not home at the time.

no word on a cause. newjersey.com said an imam died after being shot outside a new york mosque. imam hassan sharif was in his car yesterday morning when he was shot multiple times. new jersey's attorney general says there's no evidence indicating the shooting was related to anti-muslim bias, and there's no word on a possible motive. the $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. and "the alexander herald leader" says the kentucky state capitol and said other state capitols were evacuated after receiving bomb threats. authorities say a mass email was sent to secretaries of state across the country yesterday saying bombs had been placed in state capitols. michigan, georgia, hawaii, mississippi, and connecticut are among the states that received the threats. no explosives were discovered, though. the fbi calls it a hoax. still to come, a judge

>> reporter: a dismal day on wall street with all three major indices reporting losses. the dow lost 284 points. the nasdaq was down 173, and the s&p 500 lost 38 points. a major automotive recall to report. ford is recalling nearly 113,000 f-150 pickups over concerns the rear axle hub could break off. the problem could cause the vehicle to lose power or roll away when in park. the recall applies to some 2021 to 2023 models. owners who hear a clicking or rattling noise should take their truck to a dealer for temporary repair while ford figures out how to deal with the issue. for the first time, two large offshore wind farms are sending power to the country's grid. one turbine at this farm about five miles off the coast of massachusetts produced roughly five megawatts of power yesterday. four more turbines are already
