heavy snow, ice, and wind. who gets snow and who doesn't? breaking overnight, south african athlete oscar pistorius is out of prison after serving nine years for killing his girlfriend. first, another deadly school shooting. another community grappling with grief, and another investigation into why. why did a 17-year-old student open fire inside a school? and the other disturbing discovery police uncovered inside. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it is happening way too often. this is the second school shooting, just four days into the new year. the latest happening in a tight knit community in iowa where parents are holding their kids just a little tighter this morning. here's what we know -- a 17-year-old high school student shot and killed a sixth grader and wounded five others. police also found an explosive device. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york. you have new information on this investigation? good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. so local police are saying they got to the school within seven minutes of receiving that call, but as we know now, this was too late. now yet another american community is left asking why. ♪ an iowa community in mourning, rocked by gun violence. stoic faces at a vigil last night after a student opened fire at a high school killing a sixth grader and injuring five others. >> we've got an active shooter situation at perry high school -- >> reporter: the shooting started shortly after 7:30 yesterday morning, just as students as perry high school were returning from winter break. according to police, the student killed one on the same campus. authorities identified the suspected shooter as dylan butler, a student at the high school. >> butler was armed with a pump action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. butler also made a number of social media posts in and around the time of the shooting. >> reporter: according to police, butler died on the

scene, turning the gun on himself. after checking the school, they found an improvised explosive device. atf officials and the fire marshal later rendered it safe. >> it is absolutely a nightmare. this is absolutely horrible. >> reporter: investigators are now searching for a motive in what's already the second tragic school shooting in the u.s. just five days into the year. while investigators have not said anything about a motive here, they did say that the suspect had a number of social media posts, something that they will be looking into. anne-marie? >> i can only imagine. jarred hill in new york. thank you. millions of people in the east are bracing for the first major winter storm of the season. it's the same system that blanketed santa fe, new mexico, with snow yesterday. winter storm alerts are posted from north carolina to maine. the system will bring a mix of snow and freezing rain starting tomorrow. heavy snow could fall in pennsylvania and new england, and some areas could see 6 to 12 inches of snow. high winds are also forecast.

new york city's central park, which is expecting a snowfall drought is expected to dodge any major snow. overseas now and a u.s. military air strike in baghdad killed a high-ranking militia commander blamed for attacks on american forces in iraq. yesterday's drone strike on the headquarters killed the deputy head of operations in baghdad. the militia said the attack killed two people and wounded five others. iraq's government condemned the bombing. i.s.i.s. is claiming responsibility for wednesday's suicide bombings in iran that killed nearly 100 people. it happened during a ceremony honoring a top iranian general who was killed in a u.s. drone strike in 2020. i.s.i.s. said two men detonated explosive belts in the crowd. it was iran's deadliest bombing in more than 40 years. and now to israel and the new round of crisis diplomacy as tensions mount in the region. secretary of state antony blinken is on his way to the middle east.

he will visit nine countries, his fourth trip there since the war began. meanwhile, the white house is considering stronger military options against the iranian-backed houthi militias -- militants, rather, in yemen. this after the group launched a drone boat filled with explosives that got within a couple of miles of u.s. navy and commercial vessels in the red sea before detonating. israel's defense minister is laying out his vision for the next phase of the war saying israeli forces would shift to a scaled down combat approach in northern gaza while continuing to fight hamas in the south. and thousands of people took to the streets in beirut for the funeral of a senior hamas leader, saleh al arouri and two of his comrades killed in a drone strike in the lebanese capital. back home, groups of voters in illinois and massachusetts filed motions to remove donald trump from those states' primary and general election ballots. the challenges filed in conjunction with a liberal

advocacy group claim trump's alleged role in the january 6th capitol attack violated the insurrection clause in the constitution's 14th amendment. trump is challenging earlier rulings keeping him off the primary ballots in colorado and maine. and house democrats are accusing donald trump's businesses of improperly received at least $7.8 million in payments from 20 countries while he was president. the report from democrats on the house oversight committee claims the payments violated the constitutional foreign emoluments clause. the report focuses on payments for stays at trump-owned hotels and apartments. the trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. more documents describing epstein jeffrey epstein's abuse of teenage girls were made public.

300 new pages were released that includes the accounts of some of epstein's young victims was they described how he used the names of his famous friends to suggest that he could help them become models or artists. one high school victim said that she went to epstein's house thinking she had been hired to give him a massage. she said he removed her clothes without her consent the first time she met him. the biden administration is pushing back against harsh republican criticism that the president isn't doing enough to ease the burden at the southern border. this as new york city files suit to stop the unannounced bussing of migrants to the city by texas governor greg abbott. cbs' weijia jiang has that story. >> reporter: the blame game goes on for the unprecedented number of migrant crossings at the southern border. >> there's only one reason why this is happening, and that's because joe biden has eliminated all of the four policies that donald trump put in place that led to the lowest illegal border crossings in 40 years. >> reporter: governor abbott says his state can't handle any more migrants, so he continues

to bus them elsewhere. the chicago mayor's office reported at least five buses are on their way from texas. and new york city mayor eric adams announced he is suing 17 charter bus companies for more than $700 million, demanding they help cover the costs to provide for about 34,000 migrants who have been transported to the city over the last two years. >> these companies have violated state law by not paying the costs of caring for these migrants. >> reporter: the white house blames house republicans for blocking a funding package that included $14 billion for border security. >> the president understands that there's a problem at the border. he put forth on his first day something to deal with that problem. >> reporter: house republicans are in no mood to negotiate. instead, they are trying to impeach the secretary of homeland security, alejandro mayorkas, who blasted the lawmakers on "cbs mornings." >> i don't have time for words

pistorius is freed on parole. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports authorities in south africa say oscar pistorius was released from prison on parole today and is now at home. the double amputee olympic runner has served nearly nine years for his sentence for the shooting death of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp, in 2013. she was shot multiple times through a closed bathroom door at pistorius' home. officials earlier said he will live under strict restrictions until the remainder of his sentence expires in december of 2029. cbs new york reports a collision caused two trains to derail injuring 24 people. a train with about 300 passengers board was traveling at a low speed when it hit a train that was out of service during the afternoon rush. that train had four crew members on board. all of the injuries are said to be minor. subway service might not be fully restored, though, until later today, and the ntsb is

investigating the accident. and the "miami herald" says firefighters determined the cause of a fire at miami dolphins' wide receiver tyree hill's mansion. officials say wednesday's fire was started accidentally by a child playing with a cigarette lighter in a bedroom. they did not say how old the child was. hill was not home at the time, but other families were there. everyone got out safely. still will to come, an incredible story of survival. >> swim to the boat, three strokes, i knew i was going to make it. >> a fisherman lost at sea for nearly 24 hours reveals what saved him.
