this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. thank you so much for joining us on this friday. let's get right to your news headlines. the u.s. supreme court says it will decide whether former president donald trump can be kept off the 2024 presidential ballot. justices will take up a case from colorado and that state supreme court ruled he should not be on the primary ballot because it said he committed insurrection and was ineligible for office. dozens of mourners attended a community memorial in oakland today for police officer tuan le. it has been a week since

he was shot and killed while responding to a burglary call. two men have been charged with his murder. next wednesday the oakland police department plans to hold a public memorial at three crosses church in castro valley. has met leak from to shelter in place order in fremont this afternoon near fremont boulevard and icehouse terrace. the fire department has not said what kind of hazmat hazardous material it actually was. it was lifted this afternoon. there was a 4.1 magnitude earthquake in southern california at the san gabriel mountains about 45 minutes east of downtown l.a. a lot of people said they felt the shaking but no reports of serious damage or injury. the giants have made a trade for a new left-handed pitcher, robbie ray is coming to the bay from the seattle mariners in exchange for right-handed pitcher anthony desclafani and mitch haniger. ray is currently recovering

from tommy john surgery and is not expected to make his debut until the second half of the season. he is a previous cy young award winner in 2021 with the toronto o'jays. onto the first alert weather. rain is on its way back to the bay area for the weekend and darren peck will timing out from our virtual studio. >> here comes the system for tomorrow. let's track the details. rain, colder air endo little bit of a wind chill factor. in just a time-out the arrival of this, late morning the showers will arrive. this is tomorrow, saturday morning. showers moving in by 9:00 and moving through the heart of sonoma and napa county by 11:00. then down to the golden gate in the 1:00 hour and then moving south, down in the south bay the time we get into the 2:00 hour and then it clears the bay and by the time we get to sunset we are done. might be a few stragglers off the coast

but they don't appear to have the best aim and i don't think we will get rain. we pick up about .10 of an inch of rain in this. some places could see about .25 of an inch of rain. what it really does is it brings in colder air. watch that cold air drooping down our way from the gulf of alaska. look at morning lows, this is where we work in general for friday and watch what happens as you look at saturday. a lot more blue and the numbers are down. sunday and monday are colder than this. and a sunday and monday it will be breezy. so when you factor in the windchill factor, a northerly breeze sunday morning , making it feel like the mid 30s for many of us. it won't be that cold on the thermometer but it will feel that way when you step outside sunday morning and monday morning. all that cold air will

be great for snow in the sierra. picking up a foot and a half of snow primarily on saturday at donner pass and echo summit. getting all the way down the mountain, down to around 3000 feet . that will be great from a snow production standpoint and for building the snowpack in the sierra. things we all really need . and the bigger picture shows us another system out there by the middle of next week. we will get more detail on that one as we get closer to it. seven-day forecast , while we know about saturday's rain, if we look farther out back towards wednesday that is when we get the next system. a little bit of disagreement in terms of how much we might get that it is rain and could potentially come in late tuesday from a system right before this one but it doesn't look all that likely. the wednesday rain it does, we will have much more on that system as we get closer to it. along the coast a beach

hazard statement is in effect and that means watch out for sneaker waves and breaking waves up to 10 feet. in pacific of the recent i served it some serious damage to the pier and the city says it will take at least three more weeks to repair the deck and concrete railings. when it comes to the fight against fentanyl it seems to be all hands on deck in san francisco . we know the chp and national guard have been helping police and prosecutors and now the treasury department is also in the mix with a new task force. lauren toms reports that they want to take away the financial incentive for drug dealers. >> everybody is doing it for a profit . if we stop the money flow of it we are stopping the reason why behind in selling fentanyl. >> bay area steve martins is ready to cut off the flow of fentanyl into the city of san francisco. >> we have those selling on the streets and those who are selling to the suppliers. we follow the money to identify

other sources either here locally in the ed or outside of the united states. >> reporter: a leader of the irs criminal investigation division is no stranger to supply of drug supplies. >> individuals that work at money sources that are transferring money knowingly without doing their background checks on these individuals as well as individuals using financial institutions to launder the money. >> launched weeks ago the strikeforce signals and increase federal effort to curb the surging amount of fentanyl coming into the u.s. that has become cheaper and more accessible with more supply brought in. >> in 2018 it was $30 for a 10th of a grandma now you can get it for five dollars. >> treatment and recovery advocate tom wolf comes the increased help and says he already sees a difference stemmed from the increased

effort between the highway patrol and national guard . >> you do see a difference in the daytime during the -- during the daytime in the tenderloin. it used to be four or five blocks with open drug scenes with dozens of dealers openly dealing on the street corners brazenly, you now see a lot of people out there still struggling and experiencing homelessness but you don't see as many drug dealers during the daytime. they've retreated to smaller, several pockets throughout the neighborhood. >> 2023 so the highest number of overdoses in san francisco and despite notable improvements, any help that comes in must be in it for the long haul. >> you can't come in and do it for six months and then leave. it has to become a permanent fixture in our efforts to mitigate the open drug scenes on the streets. >> for martins that is a commitment his team has made. >> it is not something that

will go away in the short term but if we can tackle both ends of the supply and payment then i think we are looking at it from the whole picture . >> all hands on deck bringing in every resource to cut off the flow of fentanyl where it begins. >> the strikeforce is just under a month old and rns says he expects a handful of arrests will be made public as they come in. he also says sanctions the financial restrictions are on the table for those linked to the influx of fentanyl to the bay area. still ahead, that climate could be some bad news for farmers. see how one is adapting to keep his farm is driving. a lot of americans want to eat healthier in the new year and we will get some expert advice on really how to focus your diet.

a new jobs report is out and it shows the u.s.

unemployment rate remains near record lows as businesses continue to add more and more workers. hotels, restaurants and other businesses in the leisure and hospitality sector added 40,000 jobs in december. the healthcare industry also grew bringing in 38,000 new positions. altogether the economy added a better-than-expected 216,000 jobs last month. those numbers can affect interest rates in the months to come . >> if we keep getting data consistent with a solid labor market i don't think the fed will be lowering interest rates anytime soon. >> the fed makes the next decision on interest rates at the end of the month. drugmaker eli lilly launched a new online service with sending medications directly to customers. it includes the company's new anti-obesity drug for patients who have a prescription . insulin drugs for people with diabetes and migraine

medication. if you are looking to change your eating habits after the holidays you're definitely not alone. new research published in the new england journal of medicine finds that most people eat about twice as much on christmas compared to any other normal day and up to half of that holiday weight gain is quickly lost but the other half remains. dr. celine is a cbs news medical contributor and editor at large at kfs health news and she sat down with a host of cbs mornings and shared some tips to help you shed those pesky pounds in the new year. >> low carbohydrate diets do tend to promote weight loss but the nutritional value of the diet still really matters. what you want to be doing is looking for diets high in protein and fiber but you want to be getting those nutrients from plant-based foods more than meat-based foods. when you make those adjustments to your diet to see a greater weight loss.

>> just this week u.s. news and world report and the mediterranean diet again which is fruits and veggies and fish the seventh year in a row best overall diet. farmers have dealt with some unusually wild weather in the past couple of years like extreme heat and heavy rains. we know that conditions can make a huge impact on crops. we see how one farmer is protecting his prize heirloom tomatoes as the planet continues to warm. >> reporter: for farmers like nick it is hard to get last year's winter and all that rain. >> it is both a blessing and a curse when you have too much. the blessing is because there is big drought, we have had that. the curse is , you are

waiting for your soil to dry out so you can put your plants in. >> nick runs assemblies ranch, seven acres of fertile soil located in winters, california and is known for his heirloom tomatoes. >> the whole cluster right here you will see all the tomatoes and the blossoms. >> we followed nick through the 2023 tomato season to get a firsthand look at what it takes to grow these heirlooms in a changing climate. for starters, because of the extreme weather the plants got into the ground later than usual. >> i would rather it happen earlier but it was a rainy year. >> in me nick showed us how 7000 tomato plants were finally in the ground a brandy ones, beef steaks, you name it. nick was full of hope. >> they will pretty much give you every color and shape that exists out there. your table will look dutiful . >> outside as the plans were beginning to form fruit --

>> that is the nursery of the sun blazing ranch, where all the magic starts. >> nick brought us inside his green house to show us rows and rows of tomato seeds beginning to sprout. nick staggers the planting of his crops and it extends the season. >> sometimes they go to thanksgiving in one year i had them fresh on christmas. the frost never came. >> a changing climate can throw a few curveballs. in 2022 a heat wave ruined many of his prize heirloom tomatoes, cooking some of them on the vine. last july he was prepared to keep his tomatoes color. >> the sunflowers are over 10 feet high, i'd say even 12 to 13 feet. so all of these are protecting the next couple of rows of tomatoes. >> nick and his team planted rows of sunflowers to shave the tomatoes from the intense

afternoon sunshine and the strategy work. >> so far i have not seen a single tomato burnt when shaded. >> he is also experiencing shielding other crops using special fabrics. >> we measured to give 30% shade. >> while assemblies ranch battled a few cold nights and word about frost nick and the team emerged with a huge crop of healthy, plump tomatoes. they grew up bumper crop of customers at the farmers market. >> this is the beef master. >> among his fans, kendra also known as a farmer's wife. kendra makes award-winning melody, crunchy, intricately layered sandwiches. >> we are in october and getting some of the best still, nothing like a late-season tomato.

>> we caught up with kendra at her shop and she whipped up a blt telling us that the centerpiece is not the bacon. >> the bacon should take the back seat as the supporting character. it is all about the seasonal tomato. >> kendra depends on locally sourced ingredients and she is concerned about the warming planet . >> nothing is really predictable these days. the weather, crops, our livelihood. >> as for nick, he is also concerned but he is determined to face adversity had on . >> we hope for the best but we have to go with the weather. what will it look like, i don't know. >> but as a farmer nick remains optimistic and plans to transfer his first seedlings in the first week of april. >> believe it or not, california produces 90% of all tomatoes sold in the u.s. and more than a third of all tomatoes grown on the planet. heads up if yosemite is on

this sunday we know that more games will go through santa clara since the team still has the top seed in the nfc. sam darnold will play quarterback against the rams and is not lively reports, the niners feel pretty good about their chances with qb two. >> this is the volkswagen red & gold report. >> the rams and niners games have always been a treat in years past but with both teams having multiple starters it doesn't packet usual punch. this does open up a huge opportunity for another niners order back, sam darnold will get his first start in the regular season, his first start since week 18 of last season when he was with the panthers. the niners backup has limited since but he did lead a fourth quarter touchdown drive against brock purdy. kyle shanahan says it is good preparation for the playoffs .
