taken off from portland for ontario, california when a chunk flew off 20 minutes into the flight. now, as bad as this looks, the whole thing could have actually been a lot worse. >> we're at the end of the plane. the emergency door is right there. >> there was thankfully no one seated near the window. >> the plane was able to make an emergency return to portland. the passengers and crew held on to their seats until the plane was safely on the ground. the boeing 737 max 9 is brand new. it just started flying in october. the faa and ntsb are looking into what exactly went wrong here. a couple of people had minor injuries, but the fact that no one was seated at that window was incredibly lucky to put it mildly. alaska sent us a statement saying while this type of occurrence was rare, the crew was trained to manage the situation. the airline added they're investigating and will share what happened when

more information is available. now, something similar happened a few years ago on a southwest flight, but it ended incredibly tragically. it had a deadly outcome. in april of 2018, an engine exploded 20 minutes into a flight on a boeing 737 shattering a window and causing a woman to be partially sucked out of the plane, killing her. now we turn to alameda county where oakland's mayor now has something unusual in common with the district attorney in the county. they are both facing recalls. the mayor has only been in office for about a year, but some residents told our da lin they have seen enough. >> reporter: this senior has lived in oakland for more than six decades. she says crime has never been this bad. >> i'm scared to walk the streets at night. i can't go to the store. >> reporter: she says in 2022

she voted for the mayor, but now wants her out. >> i've met her. she's a very nice person. but i think the job is a little bit too big for her. >> reporter: and you voted for her? >> yes, because of her personality. she's a sweet person. >> reporter: on friday, she signed a petition to start the recall application process. the lead recall petitioner is a retired alameda county superior court judge. >> she continues to make mistake after mistake after mistake. it's simply poor judgment on her part. >> reporter: the retired judge claims mayor thao's first mistake was firing the popular oakland police chief laron armstrong. >> businesses are leaving oakland. she didn't even have, didn't even make the application for a grant to get money for r■etail heft. >> reporter: oakland police report violent crime went up by 21% in 2023 compared to 2022. >> she is making it worse, and

we just need to get rid of her. >> reporter: mayor thao supporters are asking for more time to turn things around. they say public safety is a complex issue. but marguerite says she's almost 80 years old. time is not on her side. she wants change now. >> it's not safe here in oakland to live. >> as with any recall, we like to ask the experts how likely is this to actually happen in the end? is it a long shot, is it achievable? professor of politics james taylor seems to think a mayoral recall would be an uphill climb. >> it requires a level of political sophistication that would have to be multipronged and multifronted and coordinated. >> some important context here, this is all just getting started. organizers still have to finish their application, then they can start gathering signatures from oakland voters.

it really looked like firefighters were getting ready for a moon mission in fremont today. it was actually an ammonia leak. people nearby had to shelter in place for an hour, but the good news, we did not hear about anyone actually getting sick from this. southern california was shaken to attention after the second sizable earthquake in a week. this one happened this morning. it was a 4.2 centserred in the mountains about 45 minutes east of downtown la.

salesforce tower. it will be a wet, windy, and cool start to the weekend. we enjoyed above average temperatures the last couple of days. that's coming to an end with a cold front that brings showers tomorrow. nice on sunday. dry weather continues monday, and more showers chances tuesday, wednesday, and maybe even thursday. some heavier rain looms towards the end of the seven-day forecast and into the following weekend. let's focus on the light rain that's going to move in tomorrow. we start the day dry. we see plenty of cloud cover in moving through the rest of tonight. the showers start to hit the ground in the north baby mid-morning. heaviest rain in the north baby mid-morning and progressing toward san francisco and oakland by midday and early afternoon. moving into the santa clara valley mid to late afternoon, and out of the valley entirely before the sun goes down early evening. we stay dry tomorrow night, and we'll be cooling off pretty efficiently. a chilly start sunday morning, but plenty of sunshine will push temperatures back up to what's normal for

this time of year. how much rain? not a lot by january standards, but a tenth to quarter inch certainly qualifies tomorrow as a generally wet day. that's why we're emphasizing the need to push outdoor plans into sunday. and it will be breezy. gusts starting to reach the 20 to 30 miles per hour range by midday for the north bay, with the most widespread strongest gusts in the 20 to 30 miles per hour range in the afternoon continuing into tomorrow evening. sunday looks like a less blustery day. here's the winter storm warning in effect for the sierra. generally 10 to 15 inches, but some places pick up close to two feet of accumulation. that's a recipe for the dangerous travel conditions along with the winds. travel into the mountains strongly discouraged tomorrow and tomorrow night. let the road crews do their thing and catch up on sunday. temperatures right now dropping down mostly into the 40s, but still around 50 degrees in san francisco and in san jose. temperatures by tomorrow morning will be a mix of 30s and 40s before the clouds thicken up, but as the clouds roll in, our temperatures start to creep up just a little bit with the blanket overhead

before the sun comes up tomorrow morning. temperatures tomorrow will be significantly cooler than where we've been the past couple of days. temperatures reach only the mid to upper 50s across the board, which is appropriately cool for this time of year. almost exactly normal for early january. cool spots 54 in half moon bay and for the north bay because that cold front is going to sweep through the north bay communities first. you get to enjoy, he said in air quotes, a cooler air mass invading by tomorrow afternoon. quick check of the dog walking forecast for tomorrow. we have a handsome adoptable dog available from east county animal shelter. this is jude, a senior pup. as the parent to a couple of seniors, they're the best. check out jude if you have room for a new fur friend. seven-day forecast. we're not going to see much change to the day-to-day temperatures. they'll be basically close to normal. mid to upper 50s. tomorrow's showers give way to a couple of dry days sunday and

the 49ers offensive line not usually the stars of the show. >> no. >> important nonetheless, but tonight they were at the house of prime rib. but they need to be bulky to protect brock purdy. andrea nakano shows us how much they put away ahead of the playoffs. >> reporter: the o linemen packed the house of prime rib. now every year the players get to pick another position group to invite to this dinner. this year it was the quarterbacks, meaning brock purdy got to enjoy a really nice prime rib dinner knowing he wasn't playing on sunday. it's truly a special occasion when the o-line and quarterbacks get to sit down and break bread in the middle of a busy football season. but the 49ers already clinching the top seed in the nfc, some players were able to splurge a bit. you're not playing sunday. does that change how you attack your meal today? >> yeah, maybe. i think i have

tonight was bruce lee night at chase. the warriors honored the bay area martial arts icon ahead of tonight's game. that was lee's daughter shannon hyping up the crowd from half court. a martial arts school also paid tribute. >> the bay area is a very rich and vital part of our legacy, you know? a lot of our lives begin right here, so we are just amazed at how much support and how much love there is for bruce lee in the bay area, and, you know, we love coming up here and being a part of it.
