all-hands meeting on safety for tuesday. congressional leaders say they've agreed to an overall spending level to fund the government for the rest of the year. congress now has until deadlines on january 19th and february 2nd to hammer out a deal and avoid a government shutdown. and "oppenheimer" was the big winner at last night's golden globes, taking home five awards. investigators say they found the missing piece of an alaska airlines plane that blew off mid flight. where it was located. and the golden globe goes to "oppenheimer"! >> a the golden globe goes to "oppenheimer." >> hollywood's golden night. the big winners as the stars shine on the first big night of the awards season. good morning, good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with a one-two punch from mother nature. while millions are digging out of the first major snowfall of the season, they are also bracing for a second winter storm. this new system is moving across the country hitting the plains and midwest today, and it's expected to slam the northeast tomorrow night. flooding is a big concern. this is what many people are dealing with -- tires spinning after more than a foot of snow fell in some places. cbs' astrid martinez joins us now from here in new york with the details. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the snow started early in the afternoon on saturday and continued throughout the night until sunday afternoon across much of the northeast. the system leaving travel woes for many adults, while children, they marveled at the first sight of flurries in years. the first significant winter storm of the season blanketed the northeast over the weekend. >> pretty nuts having this much snow in such -- very sudden, too, like we didn't get any gradual snowstorm, nothing like that. >> reporter: cleanup is under way in haverhill, massachusetts, as chris helson shovels through the more than a foot of snow that walloped the region. >> plan is to stay warm. >> reporter: further in the state in littleton, treacherous travel conditions were to blame for at least one fatal car accident. snow began to fall saturday afternoon in connecticut bringing down power lines. and over in new jersey, snowplows worked to clear the way for drivers stuck on the roads while children enjoyed the first sight of flurries in

nearly two years. >> it's like a white miracle. it's snow. >> i want to play in the snow with my sisters, and i'm going to build a lot of snowmen. >> reporter: the combination of snow on the ground and expected rain could mean widespread flooding in the tri-state area on tuesday night. new york governor kathy hochul urged residents to prepare. >> after 16 hours of snowfall, conditions are slushy and wet. >> reporter: out west, there was snow in nevada and california where blizzard-like conditions pounded the sierra-nevadas. and down south in fort lauderdale, florida, this tornado caused power outages as it touched down saturday. no injuries were reported. and that second storm that is on the move from the southwest to the northeast is expected to bring every winter weather threat imaginable from heavy snow, strong winds, potential tornadoes, and serious flooding. anne-marie? >> sound terrible. astrid martinez in new york, thank you.

more than 140 boeing planes operated by alaska and united airlines continue to be grounded this morning. it comes after an alaska airlines flight had to make an emergency landing friday when a door plug blew off the side of the plane shortly after takeoff from portland, oregon. it left a gaping hole. >> seattle, alaska, we declare an emergency, need to descend down to 10,000. >> the boeing max 9 jet was carrying 177 people, but no one was sitting next to where part of the fuselage blew off. last night the ntsb said alaska airlines' pilots reported pressurization warning lights on three earlier flights on the same plane. officials say the plane was not being used on long flights over water to hawaii in case the warning light reappeared. they only say -- they, rather, also say a man near portland sent a photo of the missing part of the plane last night after he found it in his backyard.

>> i can just see the outside of the door plug from the pictures, the white portion, we can't see anything else. we're going to pick that up and make sure that we begin analyzing it. >> united and alaska airlines canceled or delayed more than 1,000 flights over the weekend, and so far today because of the grounded planes. travel disruptions could last through at least the middle of this week, though. and now to the fighting in the middle east. israel says that it has wrapped up major combat in northern gaza and dismantled hamas' military infrastructure there. in the south, an air strike near the city of rafah killed two journalists including the oldest son of wael dahdouh, al jazeera's chief correspondent. he also lost his wife, two children, and a grandchild in an october air strike. the cross-border fighting with lebanon is intensifying. the idf said it struck hezbollah

targets in lebanon after a hezbollah rocket hit an air traffic control base in northern israel. in the west bank, ten people were killed including a young girl as israeli police fired at a car that rammed a checkpoint, and a palestinian man killed by attackers while driving a car with israeli plates. and as secretary of state antony blinken shuttles between capitals on his latest trip to the region, he says he's focused on preventing a wider conflict and securing the release of hostages in gaza. and we are learning new details about the delays in letting top government officials know about defense secretary lloyd austin being in the hospital. the pentagon says austin had an undisclosed elective minor medical procedure december 22nd and went home a day later. he was admitted to intensive care unit at the -- at walter reed army medical center on new year's day after experiencing severe pain. president biden, congress, and top military leaders were not notified for days.

the pentagon says austin has resumed his duties, and there's no word on when he'll get out of the hospital. congressional leaders say they have reached an agreement on overall spending levels for this year that could help avoid a partial government shutdown. house speaker mike johnson said the deal would secure $16 billion in additional spending cuts from the previous agreement. senate majority leader chuck schumer called it a good deal. the agreement cuts more than $6 billion in covid spending and speeds up cuts to irs funding. it was a big night for "oppenheimer," "succession," and "the bear" at the "golden globes". the first award show of 2024. danya bacchus joins us from los angeles with all the highlights. good morning to me i guess, good night to you, not sure what time it is there now. >> reporter: neither am i, anne-marie. good morning to you. hollywood's party of the year kicked off award season in style

bringing out a-list celebrities to honor the best in film and television. there were some surprise wins, a historic one, and one clear frontrunner. >> "oppenheimer"! [ cheers ] >> reporter: "oppenheimer" dominated the "golden globes" winning five awards including best drama, best actor for cillian murphy, best supporting actor for robert downey jr., best score, and best director for christopher nolan. >> we bring people together and try to get them to give their best. >> reporter: the top comedy/musical prize went to "poor things" for which emma stoned nabbed the best actress in a comedy or musical award. >> i love getting to say this dialogue -- >> reporter: the film edged out "barbie" which took home best original song for billie eilish's "what was i made for?" the "holdover's" won paul giamatti and d'avine joy randolph for best actress and best supporting actress. indigenous actress lily gladstone made history for

her drama acting award win for "killers of the flower moon." >> i love everyone in this room right now. on the television side, hulu's "the bear" dominated the comedic categories with winds for best actor, jeremy allen white, best actress, ayo edeberi, and best television comedy series. >> thank you to the entire restaurant community. >> reporter: hbo's "succession" took top television drama as well as acting awards for kieran culkin and matthew macfadyen. netflix had a good night. "beef" nabbed the lead series supporting drama award went to elizabeth debecki for her portrayal of princess diana in "the crown." and the "golden globes" award show is a great predictor of what we can see for the rest of awards season. if last night is any indication, we know there is a lot more excitement ahead. anne-marie? >> yep, should be good. danya bacchus in l.a. thank you.

moon. and anti-semitic incident at a girls high school basketball game and new video in a police shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "reuters" says mississippi authorities released body cam video of a police officer shooting an unarmed 11-year-old boy. >> police! you got any weapons, you better put them down! >> officer greg capers was called to a home last may after aderrien murry called police to say that his father was threatening his mother. he was shot in the chest as he entered a room and put his hands up. he survived but suffered extensive injuries. the grand jury decided not to indict the officer. the boy's family has filed a $5 million civil lawsuit against the officer, the city, and the police chief. the "new york post" says a public high school in yonkers, new york, kicked a girls basketball coach and player off the team after an anti-semitic incident. officials say during a game last week against a private jewish high school some kids from the

public school made anti-semitic slurs and cursed their opponents. security guards had to escort the jewish players off the court. officials apologized for what they called painful and offensive comments. "the denver post" says police in colorado are investigating an incident receiving republican representative lauren boebert and her ex-husband. it's not clear what happened in the restaurant. a political group working to oust boebert from office reported that she punched her ex-husband, jason, twice. in a statement she said, quote, i didn't punch jason in the face, and no one was arrested. police declined to release further details, though. still to come, let the party begin. carnival season kicks off in the big easy. we'll take you to the celebrations. sy. we'll take you to the celebrations. i was stuck. unresolved depression symptoms were in my way. i needed more from my antidepressant.

♪ [ cheers ] carnival season is under way in new orleans. the countdown to mardi gras began saturday when midnight marked the beginning of more than a month of parades, balls, and king cake. dozens of revelers rang in the season in the french quarter celebrating the birthday of joan of arc in a costume parade. more possible trouble for lead-tainted applesauce pouches and one of the largest radio podcast companies files for chapter 11. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: wall street closed its worst week since halloween with a listless friday. the dow gained 25. the nasdaq was up 13. s&p up 8 points. radio giant odyssey has filed for bankruptcy.

the radio and podcast giant says it did so to reduce its debt. the philadelphia-based company owns hundreds of radio stations nationwide, but it has a debt of nearly $2 billion. odyssey says it does not expect any operational impact from the restructuring. more problems for these applesauce pouches. the fda says children who consumed the recalled lead-contaminated pouches may have been exposed to chromium. there's a form of chromium that's a known carcinogen, but the agency is not able to determine which form of it was in the applesauce pouches. and the chocolatier is once again on top at the box office. "wonka" winning the big spot for a third time in its fourth week in theaters. it made another $14.4 million in ticket sales, and the horror flick "night swim" snagged second place with $12 million. it was the only new movie of the week. analysts say 2024 is getting off to a slower start than last year.

"rust" star colman domingo looked regal in a custom louis vuitton shirt with a jacket with pearl pins, and red was the color of the night. a parade of stars including men and women choosing the fiery hue for the event. barack obama has won another emmy award. during last night's creative arts emmys, the former president won for best narrator for his netflix documentary series "working: what we do all day."
