. this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. now at 3:00, a ceasefire rally turns violent. why the police in one east bay city say they may have a hate crime on their hands. plus, why hundreds of people crammed into san francisco city hall. the message they are trying to send ahead of a big vote. and the feds found the door that blew off of the alaska airlines plane but they found new problems in other boeing jets. thanks for joining us, let's get right to your top headlines this afternoon. the police are looking into a potential hate crime that happened as protesters called for a ceasefire in gaza over the weekend. this man shoved a counterprotester to the ground,

ripped the israeli flag out of her hands and burn today on the street. they have video of the incident. they are asking any other witnesses or anyone who recognizes the man to give them a call. cruise is offers $75,000 to resolve the investigation into the october pedestrian crash that ultimately cost the robo taxi company its san francisco testing permit. the dmv accused them of misleading regulators about that crash. cruise, that is owned by gm says they are offering to share more data with regulators. there was flaring again, today, the chevron refinery in richmond. chevron says they are investigating and there is no risk to the public. this is the latest flaring incident at that refinery in recent weeks. the fire department is monitoring today's decision. let's get to first alert weather right now. meteorologist darren peck is here with the forecast, darren?

>> reporter: we woke up with a batch of cold air this morning. will not have the frost advisory back to you. tuesday and wednesday but thursday we might. thursday will be cold, the real focus is not necessarily the cold air at this point. it is timing the bands of rain and we are going to do that in more detail coming up in the first alert forecast. you can see tomorrow, there is the leading edge, we have a weak cold front moving across in the morning, not much out of that. on wednesday, the follow up to that system comes through. a little more focused on the middle of the day. and that one gives us perhaps a little more rain. there is another one for next weekend. coming up in the forecast we are going to look at three of them. get you caught up on what there is to expect. for four hours now the san francisco board of supervisors rules committee have been listening to public comment on a proposed ceasefire resolution in gaza. hundreds of people

came to city hall to speak their mind on the resolution. the committee is expected to approve it and send it to the full board for the vote tomorrow. it will have amendments including one that calls for a two-state solution. >> the suffering that i am seeing on the footage it is just unbearable. there is nothing that can justify that suffering. >> a group of health care workers stagedda i protest inside of city hall. including a die in to show the medical workers killed by bombings ander is a strikes in gaza. according to the world health organization there have been 600 attacks in gaza and the west bank since october 7th. meantime, secretary of state blinken is attending diplomatic meetings and negotiations around the middle east. he just arrived in tel aviv to meet with israeli leaders. it comes from saudi

arabia, the uae, cutter, jordan and turkey. back here in the u.s. protesters in south carolina briefly disrupted a speech by bide en. they were shot down by chants of four more years. they understand their passion and will do all he can to resolve the war. new information about that terrifying alaska airlines flight. this afternoon, united airlines said it found loose bolts on door plugs on several other of its aircrafts. the faa ordered all 737 max 9 planes to be inspected after a door plug blew off of that alaska flight on friday. investigators are still trying to determine what exactly caused that to happen. alaska airlines says it expects to be canceling flights for days here in the bay area. 17 alaska airline flights have been canceled at sfo alone at

oakland international, two canceled and san jose the airline canceled eight flights. 100 planes have been grounded by all of the fallout from this. we have the latest on the investigation from portland. >> reporter: these boeing 737 max 9 planes are not leaving the ground. the faa ordered 171 of the planes pulled out of service forcing hundreds of cancellations from alaska and united on monday while the investigators try to determine what caused a door panel to blow out during an alaska flight on friday night. >> alaska -- moving down to 10,000 and intending to return back to portland >> it happened shortly after taking off from portland leaving a hole. the force was so great it pulled off a passenger's shirt and ripped open the cockpit door 26 rows away. nicholas was on the flight. >> a loud boom, almost like a

miniexplosion happened abruptly. >> reporter: so-called plug door was recovered in a schoolteacher's backyard. the panel is put in place of an optional emergency exit on some 737. >> when they install it, it is not something that is an inspection item from the inside of the plane you can not even tell that there is anything different about that location. >> investigators will spend another day pouring over the airplane. you will see it back here behind us with the focus on that area where the 63 pound piece of the plane blew out. they reported pressure lights including january 4th, the day before. alaska restricted the plane to fly only over land while they looked at the problem. >> reporter: boeing is planning a safety summit on tuesday.

. welcome back. 10 years ago, if you remember, san francisco began a program called vision 0, to end all pedestrian fatalities by 2024. now we are in 2024 and the program has not reached its goals, the new state law aims to improve pedestrian safety at crosswalks. but it comes at the expense of parking spots. >> reporter: its purpose of the new law is to increase pedestrian visibility. there are places in a city like san francisco where the letter of the law seems a bit

impractical. >> reporter: robby traveled from connecticut for work and has not figured out what to make of san francisco's traffic. >> i have been here for a week and no, i have not gotten used to t. i don't know what is harder, driving or walking. >> reporter: amazed at all of the distractions that drivers have to deal with. >> there are scooters, there are cable cars, there are people, there are, you know, tents in the middle of the streets. there is a lot of obstacles. >> reporter: it makes it dangerous for people trying to cross the street especially when they can be partially hidden by cars parked along the sidewalks. >> i feel like, like people can not see me when i am on the sidewalk. it feels that way a lot. especially here in san francisco. >> reporter: so, ab413 was signed into law and went into

effect january 1st. prohibits parking so guys like joe do not have to wander into the street to see passed the van parked near the corner. >> you don't want to get hit by a car. you got to look around any way. i look around any way. because here, the drivers are, oh, boy, some of them are bad news. >> reporter: a safety measure known as daylighting, allowing more room for pedestrians to be seen. most corners have barriers that prevent parking near the cross walks. in the residential areas of the sunset district it is a different story. resident says there is a reason there are so many cars parked on her street. >> not just this street. it is a lot of streets, you know, one person may have 5-6 cars. and that is their privilege, you know, but it is not fair because it is keeping the parking away, the people that really need a space. >> reporter: here there are no barriers, red curbs keeping people back, cars are parked right at the edge of the

intersections. according to the new law these cars are illegally parked. a resident named hilton says he does not think it is practical. >> it will not be possible out here, man >> why? >> mainly because look how tight it is already and then even at that it is like when you see people parking out here, even for just a little bit it post up on there, get their stuff out of the house and come out and it is illegal people will get tickets left and right. >> reporter: he says it is that way in many areas in the city. >> out here in san francisco you are fighting for parking as it is. making it difficult and the tickets they do for out here it is absolutely ridiculous. you will go broke in like a month if you end up with that law. it is crazy. >> reporter: the law already exists but how much it will be enforced is yet to be seen. for the next year san francisco will only be issuing warnings to illegal parkers, come 2025 the tickets will begin flowing for people parking on the

clouds out there. we are watching that from the window on the bay. that is the storm, calling it a storm it is a major upgrade. not a lot of rain or super impactful, there is rain coming our way, tomorrow and wednesday. we will look at that. first, here is monday. monday, day time highs will climb up to pretty much on the mark for average. pretty much in the upper 50s bay area wide. tomorrow morning will not be as cold as today was. no frost advisory for tomorrow. does not mean it will still not be cold but not as cold as today. getting into the detail of the arrival of this rain. the big picture shows us the system coming together, leading edge coming together on tuesday. we looked at this a moment ago. wednesday, follow up showers coming through. let's get more specific on that. slow it down. here is the tuesday rain. notice where the rain begins in the north bay. this is early, the 6:00 hour. then, the showers fall apart. get stalled, they manage to hold together enough to get a few light showers across the heart of the bay area here. now

we are looking at the 10:00 hour. then, early afternoon, you can trace the cold front right there. watch the line. that is going to be the back edge to this. just to show you how it will progress. wider view, play it forward, watch it leave by the time we get to 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. then we will have blue skies for sunset tomorrow. then, on wednesday, next batch of rain coming in. same timing, wednesday morning, we get widespread showers northbound in the morning, throughout the afternoon, good band moves through the south bay, 7:00, 8:00 in the evening we will be done. not a lot of rain in that. we will pick up rain. more in places, looking at the south bay, it is the same story on that. snow in the sierra from that system it is going to be pretty good. tuesday, maybe not so much. watch wednesday. more snow comes in on wednesday. that is the travel issue. look at it again on i-80. that is tuesday. maybe a couple inches, now look at

wednesday. far more impactful, give yourself extra time. i would not take the drive on wednesday. if you can go early tuesday or thursday that is the way you get across the sierra. next system coming in on saturday. does not look like a lot of rain on that one. more so like saturday and sunday and monday and maybe we are really only talking about a quarter of an inch of rain from that one. in the seven-day forecast we got it all spelled out for you. keeping an eye on the system, a chance of rain begins on friday, lingers into sunday, timing will shift as will the amounts. former warriors gm bob meyers is headed to the nfl. he will join the washington commanders. he won four championships with the warriors and was twice named nba executive of the year. now he will start working with the commanders along with another new higher. vikings gm. the two, the first order of business is, of course, to find a new head coach this have the coach was fired today. the warriors hope the
