news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. we have heard from a lot of bay area business owners fed up with crime. so much so they are taking matters in their own hands like this consignment store owner who pulled his own gun and scaring the suspects right out the door. and in berkeley, the owner of 14carats told us when thieves swiped $100,000 worth of jewelry from the store in 2022 he did not let them go without a fight. >> i fought back. i told him to stuff it. i went after him. he started hitting me with a gun. >> and just today, a gun battle erupted during an attempted armed robbery at an oakland jewelry store. and a owner said he is joining the fight.. >> reporter: take a look at this video from inside msm jewelry just after 10:00 a.m. on monday. two suspects burst through the door, guns drawn. the owner of the store says he shot at the suspects and they

fired back multiple times. no one was hurt in the store. the owner says he may have hit one of the suspects. this is just the latest in a string of violent armed robberies in fruitvale. oakland city councilman tuesday has gotten so bad that local merchants are calling for an emergency meeting with city officials. >> we did assign an officer that reports to the chief. we did assign ongoing officers on a daily basis. we do have ambassadors through the violence prevention program. >> reporter: even with all of that police presence, councilmember says he understands business owner's frustrations. that intersection of international boulevard and 42nd avenue continues to be a target for crime. it is one of the reasons that the councilman is advocating oakland declare a state of emergency. >> you know, at one time

growing up here i did see the highway patrol. they are state highways, they need to monitor, patrol that area like they used to. >> reporter: it is unclear how much support he has from fellow councilmembers and the mayor's office. but he says he plans to talk to all of them this week. he says it is lucky no one was killed in the latest shooting and he does not want to wait around for another one to happen. >> that action, that activity, i don't care what color you are, where you are from, what is your age, no, we are not going to accept that behavior. we have to enforce the law. >> the councilmember plans to invite the police and sheriff's department to his meeting with merchants. at the same time, oakland mayor is facing a recall effort launched by opponents who say crime has never been this bear. the mayor said she has the best job in the world because she

has a chance to fight for a safer and more prosperous oakland and asked the community to come together to fight for the city that they love. today the oakland police department paid tribute to an officer killed in the line of duty. there was a procession outside of the police administration building for officer le. he was killed late last month while responding to a robbery at a cannabis business. his memorial is set tomorrow morning in castro valley. tonight, alaska and united both say they found loose bolts on the same type of plane that blew a door on friday on its way to california. they are the only two u.s. carriers that fly the boeing 737 max 9 that is now grounded for inspections. united says the loose bolts came from panels called door plugs that can take the place of emergency exits. that is exactly what blew out on the alaska max 9 on friday night. we flu over sfo earlier and saw

planes being inspected. alaska says the max 9 fleet grounded, it is expected to be canceling flights for days. meanwhile, a school teacher in portland found a big piece of evidence in the investigation, the blown out alaska door plug landed in his backyard. >> i was not expecting to find it. so, it was actually a friend of mine that lives in the neighborhood that suggested i go and check my backyard. but with the flashlight beam i could see that there was something gleaming white underneath the trees. >> that man is a science teacher and he explained why he thinks it was found in one-piece. >> in my physics class we talked to impulse and momentum. that comes up as well. the trees acted like an air bag and made for a longer stop and a lower force. i don't think that the door was damaged at all by the fall. >> pretty incredible. something else not damaged this iphone

that flew out of the airplane fell and still works. the story it is telling coming up a little later in the newscast. now, to a miracle fall in southern california where a woman survived four nights of freezing temperatures trapped in her crashed truck. she rolled 100 feet down a canyon near mount baldy while swerving to avoid a deer. that is where she stayed until sunday when a man fishing nearby heard her cries for help. >> not much left of her truck. when i got to the truck it was mangled pretty bad. she, i don't know how she survived it. i saw the steering wheel it was almost folded like a taco, her head must of hit that. >> so, chris had no cell reception which made getting help complicated but he was finally able to flag down a forest service crew. he says he knows what it is like to need a miracle because 10 years ago he was shot while hunting in that same area and needed to be

focus of jake's six year long obsession. >> november 2017 i came out here one day, just by myself photographing and i never really left. >> reporter: a street photographer or in this case bridge photographer he has been here every day capturing life along this iconic landmark. >> some days it is a really, really sad day. some days it is a really, really exciting and positive experience and i think that is what makes it so amazing. >> reporter: in the last four years he says he has missed only 20 days snapping an estimated 100,000 photos. >> are there days you don't want to be here? >> yeah. i mean, all of the time i wish i could sleep in and not be in cold fog and rain. >> reporter: he is here up to 10 hours a day. but unlike most people his eye is not on the bridge itself but on what is happening on it. >> you have one second to get it right. you can never duplicate that situation again.

and when you get something out of that, i think, it is way more magical than anything captured in a studio. >> the bulk of his work is done on film using a compact like a camera. over the years he witnessed car crashes to protests to weddings and something else this span sadly become famous for. >> there are days where i literally stopped or played a role in stopping three to four people from jumping in one day. >> reporter: after repeated delays the long awaited suicide prevention barrier has been completed this month. in the last few years jake estimates he helped around 90 people either talking them off of the ledge or keeping them distracted long enough for a patrol officer to arrive. financially speaking he is barely surviving. relying on savings and credit cards to fund his project. so far he has not been able to monetize it.

happening. just starting to see the first showers getting within range of the radar in northern california. the satellite, the radar loop, over the past few hours shows the activity hitting the far northern coast of california the moisture aimed towards the northwest. dropping down towards us as we head through tonight and tomorrow. so, let's switch over to future cast and track the rain as we head through the rest of tonight and into tomorrow when the first showers will hit the ground in the north bay. a few sprinkles before the sun comes up. the showers moving in before sunrise tuesday morning and quickly moving north and south of the bay area. it will not be all that heavy moving into the santa clara valley by early afternoon and out of the santa clara valley before the sun goes down. we will see breaks in the cloud cover with a little bit of sunshine peaking through tuesday afternoon. not done with the rain chances yet. the clouds thicken back up tuesday night and we will see showers moving back in on wednesday. it will be a brief rain chance. it might be

slightly heavier. moderate downpours, those are not going to cause issues for us. they will move out heading into wednesday afternoon and then we dry out for a couple of days, thursday and friday. totaling both days together. tuesday, wednesday, amounts are going to be modest from under 1/10th of an inch of rain from the low end to maybe 3-4/10th of rainfall. over the course of 36 hours or so. it will not be a huge rainmaker for us. efficient squeezing out snow in the sierra. adding up 10-15 inches of snow. close to 1 1/2 feet, closer to two feet in the smaller peaks, tuesday night, wednesday, strongly discouraged. and on i-80 during that time frame. tuesday night and wednesday. the road crews will have plenty of time to catch up before the end of the workweek and the weekend. there is the cloud cover filling in over head. keeping the temperatures from dropping as far last night as they did

yesterday morning, below freezing early this morning. it will not be the case tomorrow morning. 40s, 50 degrees, we will continue to end up in the 40s by early tomorrow morning. the chilly spots dipping down into the upper 30s. despite the cloud cover, the rain, we are going to warm up to near average tomorrow afternoon almost exactlily where we were today. san jose, 60 degrees, that is exactly normal for early january. the cool spots are only going to be 3-4 degrees cooler. the temperatures get cooler the farther north you go because the cold front that will be sweeping through is going to deliver another wave of cool air first to the north bay and that will make its way across the rest of the bay area heading through the rest of tomorrow and into tomorrow night. the temperatures over the next seven-days will not change that much. close to normal. highs in the middle to upper 50s every day through the
