threats, and is that's not all. and championship celebration. the michigan wolverines take down the washington huskies to win their first national title in 26 years. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with new developments if there that terrifying scare on board the alaskan air flight. the faa is investigating the bolts that held the door in place before and during the flight and united have reported finding loose hardware in their grounded 739 max-9 planes. cbs's jarred hill is joining us with the latest on the investigation. good morning. >> good morning. it continues to be scary. a big question for aviation investigators, though, is weather the loose hardware issue

is a systemic problem. united believe it's linked to the manufacturing process, but this investigation is just getting started. this morning major mystery in the alaskan airlines mid flight blowout. federal investigators are trying to figure out what happened to the bolts that were supposed to hold the door plug in place. >> we have not yet recovered the four bolts that restrain it from its vertical movement, and we have not yet determined if they existed there. that will be determined when we take our plug to the lab in washington, d.c. >> reporter: after a days-long search, they found one key piece of evidence, the missing door panel in a high school teacher's backyard. >> i was pretty surprised and also amazed that could be happening in my yard. >> reporter: just one day after the faa temporarily grounded all 737 max-9's, united airlines said it found loose bolts of their 737 max-9 planes during

ins insp inspections. texas also found them on their aircraft. >> foremost figure out what happened here on this aircraft. if it's systemwide or a fleet issue, we will issue an urgent safety recommendation. >> reporter: the temporary grounding of the 737 max-9 is causing disruptions for thousands of air travelers. >> i need to get home. as we were walking out the door of the airport, the flight was canceled. >> reporter: according to flightaware monday hundreds of flights were canceled, thousands delayed. the faa says these planes are not taking off until enhanced inspections are done and whatever recommended repairs are completed, anne-marie. >> all right, jarred, thankyou so much. turning now to that master massive winter storm slamming the country, millions of americans are under dangerous weather alerts. the storm unleashed severe blizzard conditions across parts of the country, stranding drivers in kansas.

in the south they were dealing with hailstorms, flooding, and tornado threats as the storm moved across texas and louisiana yesterday. and in the northeast, the big concern is potentially dangerous rain and coastal and river flooding. parts of new york, new jersey, and connecticut could get up to 5 inches of rain. an explosion at a historic texas hotel injured 21 people. authorities say they believe a gas leak at the more than century-old sand man signature hotel closed which rocked downtown fort worth. the restaurant in the hotel was undergoing construction. the rescue crews found dozens of people trapped in the basement. former president donald trump will attend the federal appeals court hearing in washington, d.c., today. a three-judge panel will hear arguments over trump's claim he cannot be prosecuted for election interference because of presidential immunity. trump has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing.

the federal judge earlier denied trump's attempts to dismiss the case on grounds of presidential immunity. and while the former president is in a d.c. courtroom, his top gop rivals are on the ground in iowa with the caucuses less than one week away. as ed o'keefe reports, president biden traveled to south carolina where he called out trump for glorifying political violence. >> the truth is under assault in america. >> reporter: making concerns about the future of democracy being his central theme, president biden struck back donald trump and those serving time for the january 6th matter in 2021. of the 1,200 people charged, more than 700 admitted they broke the law. nearly 500 were sentenced to prison time. >> they tried to steal the election. now they're trying to steal his

history, saying the violent mob was a, quote, peaceful protest. >> reporter: biden also called on trump over the shooting in iowa. >> my response is we have to stop it. >> reporter: biden gave a speech from the pulpit on a 2015 mass shooting. he criticized nikki haley, former south carolina governor now a presidential contender for recently blaming slavery. >> the freedom people could and couldn't do. >> let me be clear for those who don't seem to know. slavery was the cause of the civil war. >> reporter: haley later confirmed those comments. >> of course, we know that. >> reporter: trump still leads iowa by double digits. he's built an army of volunteers, a robust operation he didn't have when he first ran and lost here. but one potential challenge for every campaign in iowa, the weather. tl forecast in the coming day

includes snow, winds, and plunging temperatures. it could keep supporters away from rallies and caucus night. ed o'keefe, cbs news, mason city, iowa. the white house and pentagon will look into why it took several days for president biden and other top officials to be told defense secretary lloyd austin was in the hospital. the president said austin -- or rather the pentagon says austin was admitted to the iu at roy walter reed new year's day after experiencing severe pain after receiving an undisclosed election active procedure. some authority was transferred to the assistant dep beaut, but the white house was not told that austin was in the hospital until three days later. and now to the israel/hamas war. u.n. human rights experts are calling for accountability for the sexual torture committed on israeli citizens on october 7th. the statement comes after israelis' criticism of the u.n. for what it saw on the action of

the issue on the sexual abuse by hamas. israeli forces showed off what they say is the largest weapons site found so far in gaza with underground workshops used to produce long-range missiles capable of hitting targets in northern israel, this as secretary of state antony blinken is in israel as part of his mid east tour to try to prevent the conflict from expanding. >> reporter: secretary blinken's visit comes at a critical time. hezbollah accused israel of killing one of its most senior commanders working closely with iran. death comes days after a heavy baron targeted an israeli base. >> it's clearly not in the interest of anyone. israel, lebanon, hezbollah for that matter to see this escalate.

>> reporter: blinken will also push israel to do more to protect civilians in gaza. over 23,000 palestinians have been killed according to the hamas-run ministry of health. while the u.n. reports a third of gaza's overwhelmed hospitals are still operating. >> it's as you can see a chaotic scene. >> reporter: israel's military is shifting tactics in northern g gaza with a more surgical operation while they remain looking for hostages, targeting the military's leadership while searching for hostages. secretary blinken is expected to discuss the ongoing regional efforts to bring home the more than 100 captives including six americans. the secretary will also travel to the west bank to meet palestinian president mahmoud abbas. this comes at the highest level of violence in decades. more than 300 palestinians have been killed by israeli forces

overnight for nearby residents over an active shooter. two people were shot and killed at a motel. the suspected shooter was found dead outside with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. there's no word on what might have led to the shooting. "the des moines register" says the parents of an iowa high school student who shot and killed a sixth grader and wounded seven others say they had no inkling the horrible violence he planned. 17-year-old dylan butler was armed with a shotgun and handgun when he opened fire at a school last week before taking his own life. his parents issued a statement saying we would never wish the harm and pain that dylan's actions caused on anyone and we could not have imagined that dylan would carry out such a heinous act. we hope the answers can be found and that those answers will prevent other young people from harming others. the los angeles "review-journal" says a man caught on video attacking someone was back in court facing

he barrels in. >> that's michigan running back blake corum scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter to propel the wolverines to the college football national championship. undefeated michigan overpowered washington last night, 34-13, in the playoff title game in houston. back home in ann arbor, students celebrated the victory. this was michigan's first national title since 1997. well, tiger woods and nike are going their separate ways, and a new honor for buffalo, new york, home of the bills and chicken wings. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." stocks rally to start the trading week as wall street tried to recover from a rough week. the dow gained 216 points, the nasdaq was up 319 points, and the s&p 500 was up 66 points. some big sports news. tiger woods and nike have ended their 27-year partnership. the golf star confirmed the news

and lift-off of the first united launch alliance. nasa's first mission to land on the moon in more than 50 years appears to be doomed. the spacecraft developed a fuel leak hours after blasting off from cape canaveral. the company managed to point the moon lander's solar panels toward the sun, but they say the leak is continuing and the lander would lose power. the plastics are back. >> why is he by our table? >> i can hear you by the way. >> can you hear me now? >> the stars were out for the new "mean girls" movie musical premiere in new york city last night. the new cast walked the pink carpet along with the original mean girl lindsay lohan. it is the 20th anniversary of the 2004 film. the new "mean girls" is based on the broadway version, and it opens in theaters friday. ♪ i only want to see you laughing in the purple rain ♪
