round three as another severe weather system moves across the country. first, the gloves come off. republican rivals ron desantis and nikki haley go on the attack, knocking each other, while the absent frontrunner, donald trump, has a stage all to himself across town. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there's a lot happening in the presidential race with the iowa caucuses just days away. first, the republican field got smaller with chris christie dropping out of the race. then nikki haley and ron desantis went head to head trying to position themselves as the alternative to donald trump. the former president, meanwhile, held a dueling event of his own at the same time. cbs' jarred hill now from new york where trump is expected back in court today. >> reporter: yeah, former president trump expected back in court voluntarily for closing arguments in the civil fraud trial, swapping the campaign trail for the courthouse as the

gop field tightens. just days before the republican caucuses kick off in iowa, former u.n. ambassador nikki haley and florida governor ron desantis in their first head-to-head debate. >> there's going to be a lot of ron's lies that have happened -- >> she says she's never said something, that definitely means she said it. >> reporter: the two gop rivals sparred over truthfulness while offering themselves as the alternative to frontrunner former president trump. >> he said he was going to drain the swamp. he did not deliver that. >> i don't think that president trump is the right president to go forward. >> reporter: the former president declined to appear at town hall on fox news. trump taking a calmer stance when it comes to getting revenge on past political opponents. >> i don't have time for retribution. we're going to make in country so successful again. >> reporter: the former president's sparingly about is stack of legal issues during the town hall, and he's not speaking today when he shows up in new york for closing arguments in his civil fraud trial. the judge ruled trump couldn't make his own closing arguments

in the case after refusing to abide by a provided list of conditions. >> there isn't a path for me to win the nomination. >> reporter: in new hampshire former new jersey governor chris christie announced he's suspending his campaign. christie caught on a hot mic before the event taking swipes at ron desantis and nikki haley saying, quote, desantis called me petrified and she's going to get smoked. she's not up to this. going back to today with this court case, again, this is closing arguments in the civil fraud trial for former president donald trump related to real estate issues here in the state. new york's attorney general, anne-marie, is seeking $370 million in damages, also to bar trump from doing any business in the state of new york. back to you. >> one of several court cases. jarred hill in new york, thank you. one person was killed and three others injured in an avalanche at a popular california ski resort near lake tahoe.

>> sounds like somebody just got buried. somebody's trying to get him. >> yesterday an avalanche on a seconds of expert trails took place just as a group of skiers started to head down a mountain at palisades, tahoe. rescuers freed at least one skier who was trapped in the snow. >> i'm lucky that the bus was late because i would have been in that avalanche. so i saw it when i was going up the chair, and then as i came around, anybody that was off the chair, we just all got asked to help. >> the avalanche took place as a major storm with snow and gusty winds moved into the region. and now to that dangerous weather that pounded the northeast. the storms may have moved out, but the cleanup is far from over. many communities are still dealing with rising rivers and a lot of flooding. cbs' meg oliver has that story. >> reporter: the monster winter storm that pummelled the south also pounded the northeast.

the iconic pemaquid point lighthouse banged up in bristol, maine. >> historic building, never been damaged like this. >> reporter: officials warned residents to shelter in place during dangerous coastal flooding in kennebunk. in portland, streets were submerged. cleanup continues in florida after catastrophic tornadoes tore through the panhandle. cbs' dave malkoff is in panama city beach. >> reporter: the national weather service is trying to figure out how fast this tornado was actually spinning. >> bending steel beams like this and yanking them out, they're pretty will secured. this would be an 125 mile-per-hour wind. >> reporter: what ef? >> a two. >> reporter: some new jersey residents trapped in their home surrounded by floodwater. how high do you expect it to get? >> all the way up to here. >> reporter: charles mcdougal and his family moved here in 2017. this is the third time he's been hit.

back in december when the flood hit, it went above that mailbox? >> yes. >> reporter: how much damage did your house suffer? >> $10,000, $20,000 maybe. we're just getting through. >> reporter: emergency crews are going door to door advising people in low-lying areas near the passaic river to evacuate before it crests. meg oliver, cbs news, paterson, new jersey. the next big system in a parade of cross-country storms is moving east. across the south where they are still cleaning up from last tornado outbreak, another chance of severe storms arrives tonight in eastern texas, louisiana, and arkansas. the tornado threat climbs tomorrow with a widespread risk of severe weather from mississippi to north carolina. in the plains and the midwest, snow moves in later today. the winter weather reaches chicago tomorrow morning. snow and gusty winds become more intense near the great lakes. some areas can expect total snowfall, over a foot, with lingering snow showers into

saturday. hunter biden is due in a los angeles courtroom today to be arraigned on felony tax evasion charges, and it comes one day after the president's son made a surprise appearance on capitol hill, showing up at a hearing to hold him in contempt of congress. cbs' scott macfarlane was there as the meeting descended into chaos. mr. biden, you plan on testifying today? >> reporter: the president's son walked into the house committee room telling cbs news he was willing to take a seat at the witness table. the committee was set to vote on whether to hold biden in contempt of congress for snubbing their subpoena last month for a closed door interview. biden has insisted he'd only testify at a public, open hearing. >> i want to ask unanimous consent to -- >> reporter: decorum turned into chaos. republicans again today declined to swear him in. >> you said the witness can choose. >> mr. biden doesn't make the rules. >> reporter: 20 minutes later --

>> excuse me, hunter -- >> reporter: biden bolted adding another chapter into his business dealings and claims without direct evidence the president benefitted from them. >> why are you choosing to leave now? >> i have a statement to make to the press. >> reporter: it was his attorney who spoke -- >> republicans have sought to use him as a surrogate to attack his father. >> reporter: biden's appearance surprised even some democrats. >> i hd no idea. >> reporter: and fueled -- >> you are the epitome of white privilege. what are you afraid of? you have no [ bleep ] to come up here -- >> reporter: a fierce marathon of arguments. >> interesting, he's here, doesn't seem to be too afraid. >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. turning to the war in gaza now. israeli forces are focusing on the southern city of khan younis. it's there the idf said it found evidence including dna that hostages were held in an underground tunnel. the israeli military would not say what was found or when they were there.

israel also believes that hamas leader yehya sinwar is hiding in a tunnel under the city. the idf also put out a statement saying the two journalists killed in a strike on sunday belonged to terror groups. the military released a document they say shows the group's logo and one of their names. all eyes will be on the hague today where hearings get under way in south africa's claims accusing genocide against palestinians. israel categorically denies the allegations. this will be the first time israel has chosen to defend itself before the world court, attesting to the seriousness of the charges, and the stakes for its international reputation. and secretary of state antony blinken wraps up his mideast diplomatic tour with a final stop in egypt today. yesterday, blinken pressed the palestinian president to reform its government so it can take responsibility for gaza. coming up, new flight cancelations following that alaska airlines blowout.

board came off the elevated tracks above coney island. officials say there may have been an issue with the track. passengers were stranded for about an hour until they were evacuated onto rescue trains. no one was hurt. last week another train derailed in manhattan following a collision. "the san antonio express" says a third person was arrested in connection with the murder of a pregnant texas teenager and her boyfriend. police arrested myrta romanos yesterday on several charges including abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence. she is the stepmother of 19-year-old christopher preciado who was arrested earlier and charged with capital murder. his father was also arrested. the bodies of 18-year-old savanah soto and father of her unborn baby, matthew guerra, were found shot to death last month. "the denver post" says the ex-husband of republican representative lauren boebert was arrested on an assault charge in a fight with his 18-year-old son.

saban, who is -- rather 72 years old won seven national championships, six with alabama and one with lsu. that's more than any other major college football coach. he took over the program at alabama in 2007 and turned it back into a national powerhouse. his alabama teams were ranked number one in a record 15 straight seasons. and another coaching change. this one in the nfl. pete carroll is out as the head coach of the seattle seahawks after 14 seasons. he led the team to its only super bowl title in 2014. the seahawks made the playoffs ten times under carroll's watch. he'll stay on in an advisory role. mcdonald's is bringing back an old favorite, while another old favorite is leaving us forever, and bitcoin gets a green light. here's today's "money watch." >> reporter: u.s. stocks closed higher wednesday as invest await inflation data set to be released today.

the dow gained 170, the nasdaq up 111, and the s&p 500 gained 26 points. a big move from the securities and exchange commission. on wednesday the agency approved 11 exchange traded funds for bitcoin. the approval will make it easier for ordinary investors to put their money into the digital currency. but the sec says this decision does not signal an endorsement of bitcoin. engine maker cummins, inc., will recall 600,000 ram trucks as part of a settlement with authorities. details of the $2 billion settlement were made public wednesday. it includes requiring the company to pay $325 million for pollution remedies. this after using illegal software to cheat emissions tests. how about a big mac but bigger? starting later this month, mcdonald's will offer a double big mac sandwich to patrons across the country, that includes four beef patties instead of two. the last time the mega sandwich was on the menu was in 2020.
