the department of homeland security has sent a cease and desist letter to texas auauthorities demanding its ages be allowed in a park that's on the border in eagle pass, texas. three migrants drowned on friday near the park, which has been under control of state authorities including the texas national guard. and a fetch weekend for "mean girls" in its opening weekend. the remake led the way at the box office, taking in $28 million. for more download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm carissa lawson, cbs news, it's monday, january 15th, 2024. this is the "cbs morning news." it's caucus day. the presidential candidates make their final pitch to iowa republicans just hours before the first votes are cast in the nominating race. polar plunge.

a dangerous arctic blast and heavy snow are gripping much of the country. will it impact turnout in iowa? and 100 days. israel marks a somber milestone in its war with hamas as its prime minister vows to keep up the fight. good morning. thanks for watching. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. we start this morning with the iowa caucuses and the brutal, bitter blast of winter weather. take a look at this map. the arctic temps are impacting much of the country with windchills in the minus 20s and 30s. and the cold could have an impact on turnout in iowa. a new cbs news poll shows former president donald trump with a commanding lead among likely republican voters nationwide. cbs' charlie demar joins us from des moines with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and the race to the white house officially begins today, and the weather has already played a major factor.

here there have been a number of in-person campaign events canceled or moved on line. despite the bitter cold, the candidates are urging supporters to simply get out and vote tonight. iowans came out in the subfreezing cold to attend rallies on the eve of today's republican caucuses. >> this is iowa. if you don't like the weather, stick around, it will change in ten minutes. >> it's important to see all the candidates. you know, get to hear all the perspectives before making a decision. >> reporter: the brutal weather has added yet another question mark for the gop candidates hoping to build momentum as the presidential race heads into high gear. >> so brave the weather, and go out and save america because that's what you're doing. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll finds former president donald trump's support among national republican primary voters has risen to its highest level yet, even as former south carolina governor nikki haley leads president biden by a wider margin in a potential general election match-up.

advisories with a wide swath of the country in a deep freeze. just look at this photo from dallas. a fountain frozen over where the temperature was a whopping 15 degrees. cbs' cristian benevides has more on this. >> reporter: from northern new york to parts of california, yet another round of winter weather. this is what the inside of highmark stadium looked like, same time the buffalo bills and pittsburgh steelers were originally set to fate off. that game was postponed to monday. >> probably for the greater good, getting home would probably be a little tough one, right? so it's probably better off. >> reporter: new york governor kathy hochul said the storm was stronger than forecasted. >> what that means, whiteout conditions, limited or no visibility, and again, very, very dangerous on our roads. >> reporter: across the eastern seaboard, flooding remains a major concern. >> there's water coming up in the shower. there's like -- everything is flooded.

>> reporter: the midwest is digging out in nebraska where the windchill is negative 40, treacherous driving conditions led to a snowplow getting stuck, while in iowa there couple was ready to ditch the snow boots for some beach sandals. >> in florida it's i think 75 and sunny. >> we're excited to see both ends of the spectrum the next couple of days. negative 20 to 80 degrees. >> reporter: much of the south won't be spared either. the windchill in the southern city of dallas, nine degrees below zero according to the national weather service. for most americans, there's just no escaping the cold. cristian benevides, cbs news. in oregon where the windchill was below 60, four people were killed, two suspected of hypothermia, and two after trees fell on their homes. democratic and republican congressional leaders unveiled a short-term spending bill to avert a partial government

shutdown. the senate and the house needed to pass the continuing resolution and send it to president biden's desk before friday's deadline. the measure would fund the government through the beginning of march. the department of homeland security says texas authorities physically barred border patrol agents from entering a park near the rio grande on friday to try and save three migrants who drowned. mexican authorities recovered the bodies of a woman and two children saturday across the border from eagle pass, texas. texas officials say the drownings had already occurred when border patrol requested access. now to israel which marked the 100th day of the october 7th massacre and 100th day of the hostages held in captivity. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu vowed to keep fighting despite pressure from the u.s. to scale back its military offensive and rising tensions in the region. the u.s. military says an american fighter jet shot down a

missile fired by yemen's houthi rebels toward an american destroyer in the red sea. this attack is the first since the u.s. and uk forces struck targets in yemen. the idf says it struck lebanon in response to a missile strike in northern israel that killed a woman and her son. and hamas aired video shows what -- showing what it says is three israeli hostages it is now holding in gaza. it's not known when the video was taken or their current conditions. the video ended with the words "tomorrow we will inform you of their fate." cbs' charlie d'agata has more on this from israel. >> reporter: fresh israeli assaults marked day 100 since the war began with no sign of when or even how it may end. it no longer matters to the dead arriving among those clinging to life at the al aqsa hospital in central gaza, adding to a death toll nearing 24,000 people. while hundreds of thousands of

the displaced wonder how much more they must endure. our cbs news colleague in gaza, marwan al ghoul, a survivor himself, covered this wedding only a couple of days ago at a shelter in rafah. a rare glimpse of joy, a moment of hope amid the misery. [ cheers ] [ speaking in global language ] >> reporter: "hopefully we'll have a brighter future," the bride tells marwan, "a new beginning for something better and we can go back to our homes one day." yet, he recorded this, too, the chaotic scenes at a bread line as residents jostled for food. aid agencies say it's too dangerous to get food to those who need it most. at the crossing into gaza we put the claim to the israeli military. >> while conducting large-scale operations in gaza we have large humanitarian operations every day inside the battlefield.

>> reporter: inside the battlefield. that's in direct contrast to the what aid agencies on the ground are saying inside gaza. the u.n. has warned that a quarter of the population is now on the brink of starvation. while in israel, people across the country took part in events to mark the day including tel aviv where thousands held a 102nd moment of silence. not only to remember more than 1,200 people murdered on that saturday morning but not to forget more than 130 hostages who remain missing. charlie d'agata, cbs news. a search is under way for two missing u.s. navy s.e.a.l.s off the coast of somalia. officials say the s.e.a.l.s were on a mission in rough seas thursday attempting to board a small ship believed to be carrying weapons from iran to yemen. one s.e.a.l. was knocked off the

"the des moines register" reports the iowa high school principal who was wounded during a mass shooting has died.

perry high school principal dan marburger was critically injured trying to protect students when a 17-year-old student opened fire earlier this month. an 11-year-old boy was killed and six others injured. the shooter took his own life. officials said marburger acted selflessly and placed himself in harm's way. "the arizona republic" says four people were killed in a hot-air balloon crash. this happened yesterday 65 miles south of phoenix. one person was critically injured. there is no word on a cause of this crash. the ntsb and the faa are both investigating. and "cbs new york" says suspected gilgo beach serial killer rex heuermann is expected to be charged in a fourth murder. sources say the 60-year-old is scheduled to appear in a long island courtroom tomorrow in connection with the killing of another woman. he earlier pleaded not guilty to

murdering three women whose remains were found near gilgo beach in 2010. still to come this morning, your ticket to the playoffs highlights. which team made history with its victory, and which team had to call a snow day as fans enjoyed the bitter cold. bitter cold. and martin luther king jr.'s son will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at his memorial in d.c. there is a new queen of the box office, and some student borrowers could see their debt completely forgiven next month. here's cbs' carissa lawson with this morning's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: the stock market is closed today for the martin luther king jr. holiday, but when it reopens tomorrow, it will attempt to rebound from friday's bumpy ride. the dow dropped 118 points. the nasdaq edged up 2.5, and the s&p 500 rose 3.5 points. nearly seven million americans could see their student loan debt forgiven as early as next months. president joe biden says anybody who took out $12,000 or less in loans and have already been repaying for ten years will get their remaining local balance canceled starting in february. those borrowers must be enrolled in the new save plan to be eligible. starbucks is looking for the supreme court to serve the

company some justice. the nation's highest court has agreed to hear an appeal from the coffee chain on a decision that orders starbucks to reinstate seven terminated employees. the workers were part of a push to unionize and became known as the memphis seven. and "mean girls" fetched the number-one spot at the box office over the weekend. the musical version of the 2004 original movie earned $28 million in its first three days in theaters. that's more than the $24 million the first movie earned in its opening weekend. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this monday morning. i'm carissa lawson, cbs news, new york. now to yesterday's nfl playoff games. the ones that were played and the one that wasn't. the detroit lions won a playoff game for the first time in -- get this -- 32 years beating the los angeles rams 24-23. the lions ended a nine-game post season losing streak, the longest in nfl history. the green bay packers upset the dallas cowboys in dallas
