vivek ramaswamy calling it quits. arctic air. another day of snow and frigid subzero temperatures turning much of the nation into a frozen tundra. are there any signs of relief? and the winners are the long-delayed emmy awards honors tv's best and brightest. the shows and stars that walked away big winners of last night. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. next stop, new hampshire. the 2024 gop presidential field is tightening. former president donald trump won the iowa caucuses with a commanding lead. florida governor ron desantis and former u.n. ambassador nikki haley are the projected second and third place winners. iowan who braved the cold yesterday told cbs yesterday economy and immigration were their two top issues. cbs's charle de mar joins us now

from des moines, iowa. charlie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it really was a dominant performance for former president donald trump as he secured an overwhelming majority of iowa caucus voters and the weather it appears did play a role. about 110,000 registered republicans showed up here in iowa. that's on track to be the lowest since 2000. former president donald trump took the stage claiming victory after his projected win in the iowa republican caucuses. >> i really think this is time now for everybody, our country to come together. we want to come together. >> reporter: in his speech trump gave rare thanks to his gop opponents. >> they are very smart people, very capable people. >> reporter: cbs news projects florida governor ron desantis at a distant second place. >> you helped us get a ticket punched out of the hawkeye state. >> reporter: former urn

ambassador nikki haley claimed herself part of a two-part race sbee spite her third place finish. >> our campaign is the last place hope of stopping the trump/biden nightmare. >> reporter: trump is expected to carry his win here in iowa to next week's gop primary in new hampshire where in the polls he leads both desantis and haley. businessman vivek ramaswamy suspended his campaign and endorsed the former president after coming in fourth. >> this has to be an america first candidate in that white house. >> reporter: the top three republican finishers have campaign events scheduled in new hampshire later today, though this morning trump is expected to first attend the new york civil defamation trial brought against him by author e. jean carroll. desantis will campaign in haley's home state of south carolina before heading to the granite state. and trump's win here in iowa shows just how strong his base really is despite impeachments and his mounting legal troubles.

his voters are putting all of that aside and standing with him as the potential republican nominee. anne-marie? >> charle de mar in des moines. thank you so much, charlie. now to our other big story, the dangerous bone-numbing temperatures that have a hold on much of the country, the weather being blamed for at least a dozen deaths. more than 125 million americans are under windchill alerts, and the weather is snarling travel plans for thousands. yesterday more than 9,000 flights in the u.s. were delayed while over 3,000 were canceled. the bitter cold continues to grip the central u.s. with windchills below minus 20 in the plains and midwest. the cold shifts east tomorrow. the snow moves through the northeast and into new england today. cbs's jarred hill is joining us from new york. jarred, you're seeing the first snowfall in overtwo years in new york. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, anne-marie. it's not a lot, but we're seeing

for the first time in more than 700 days at least an inch of snow in the city, but this is nothing compared to how the winter storm is impacting some parts of the nation. this morning an arctic blast continues glow across the country. >> yeah, it's pretty cold. >> reporter: from denver to d.c. where a city bus struggled to get up a slight hill. snow and cold winds are making it difficult to get around. snow buried parts of new york, so much the bills paid an army of subletters in the community to clear the stands ahead of the game monday afternoon. the wild-card playoff game moved from sunday and new york's governor kathy hochul in anticipation of the dangerous weather and danger to fans. > we know how dangerous the triple threat is. the triple threat of icy cold temperature with high winds and the blowing snow. >> reporter: the extreme weather is also being blamed for leaving more than 100 million people in the dark mostly in oregon where winter weather knocked down power lines.

portland general electric warned more wind and ice could delay the recovery. >> these are power lines that are wrapped around trees and branches that need to be disentangled and pulled apart. >> reporter: keeping the lights on also a concern in texas. the state's electrical grid asked people to conserve energy with the potential for winter lows. in 2021 the winter weather caused a days-long power outage across the state. in illinois, the windchill making it feel like negative 40, freezing the mississippi river. the winter weather wreaking havoc at the airport as crews worked to de-ice planes on the heels of a holiday weekend. anne-marie, this winter weather is also causing a number of schools to close, in particular ones in denver as well as various parts of texas as people try to make sure that they're staying safe. >> all right. well, jarred, you stay safe. come on inside, jarred hill in new york. >> reporter: definitely, thank you.

well, turning to the war between israel and hamas, one day after a terrorist group released video showing three hostages, hamas says the two membership are died. israel denies that they were killed in air strikes and is very concerned about whether they very are still alive. the woman's well-being is still unknown. in israel a woman was killed and more than a dozen others hurt in a car-ramming and stabbing attack in a tel aviv suburb. police say at least two palestinians stole three different cars and ran down pedestrians. the suspects were later arrested. and with tensions heightened in the region and fears of a widening war, iran says it launched strikes against anti-iran terror groups near consulate groups in northern iraq and syria. i.s.i.s. took the blame for two bombings. no american facilities were struck or damaged. and defense secretary lloyd austin is out of the hospital. the 70-year-old was discharged yesterday from the walter reed national military medical

center. he was there for two weeks to treat complications from prostate cancer surgery. austin came under criticism for waiting several days to tell president biden and senior administration officials that he was in the hospital. he says he'll work from home as he recovers. doctors say his prognosis is excellent. the crisis at the southern border has turned into a turf war between state and federal officials. the biden administration says three migrants drowned after texas national guard members physically blocked federal border agents from attempting to rescue them. cbs's weijia jiang reports. >> reporter: the texas national guard abruptly seized control of a 2 1/2-mile stretch of the southern border last week. dhs says on friday federal border protection agents requested access to the area where a group of migrants was attempting to cross the rio grand, but texas officials refused. a woman and her two children drowned.

in a cease and desist letter to the texas attorny general, the top lawyer for dhs says texas's failure to provide access to the border persists even in instances of imminent danger to life and safety calling the state's actions clearly unconstitutional. >> it's all politics. visceral politics. >> reporter: texas congressman henry cuellar says the state prevented federal agents from using specialized ee kwmt to save the migrants who died. >> a scope truck is a truck that has this camera that can see what's happening in the river that could have had an impact of what happened here. >> what is your message to governor abbott? >> you cannot do this. this standoff is not helpful. >> reporter: the texas military department says two of the migrants had already drowned by the time border patrol asked to enter the area. governor greg abbott says he has the legal authority to control areas of the southern border
