this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. a santa clara sheriffs deputy convicted. how a mysterious drive-by shooting turned out to all be one big lie. sfo was getting ready to shut down a runway. that could cause flight delays for months. why the airport says it is necessary. the faithful are getting hyped for the niners to take on the packers. what you need to know to get in on the action. thank you for joining us this afternoon. we begin with breaking news. a freeway is shut down in the east bay at this hour. let's check in with anne makovec for a look at your news headlines. >> this will affect a lot of

people trying to head out of town. we have a back up in the richmond area. this is a long westbound i-80. all lanes are blocked east of mcbride avenue. this is because a big lake -- big rig is leaking fuel. traffic is being diverted but it is causing backups on surface streets. caltrans has not said how long i-80 will be closed but we will continue to monitor this. a former santa clara county sheriff's deputy is convicted about lying about a drive-by shooting. 30-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of misdemeanor vandalism and filing a false report of an emergency. prosecutors say he was patrolling in morgan hill when he hit an emergency button on his radio saying shots fired. he told the officer on scene that a driver approached him and opened fire, hitting his body camera. he has been ordered to do community service, pay restitution and surrender his peace officer certification. a third suspect charged in the death of oakland police

officer tuan le was arraigned in court today. 34-year-old marquise cooper facing fisting -- 16 felonies including first mark -- first-degree murder. an update this afternoon on that plane crunch -- plane crash in san mateo county. second person died sunday. this news comes after a woman's body was pulled from the water yesterday. the faa and ntsb are investigating. the cause of the crash is under investigation. the san francisco airport's international terminal is being named in honor of the late dianne feinstein. airport officials just voted on the change today. feinstein's work in developing the city's airport was an accomplishment during her time as mayor. a heads up for drivers who take highway 101 in the south bay. mar morning, some lanes will be closed for maintenance. closures are in both directions between shoreline boulevard and mountain view and 13th street in san jose. they are scheduled between 9:00 in the morning and 4:00 p.m. and crews expect to have that work finished by friday. not a moment too soon for people driving on the road. >> anything that causes delays,

we want that done as soon as possible. let's get onto our weather . let's get a check with our first alert meteorologist darren peck who is tracking the rain. i got a little tongue-tied because i got so excited because of the raindrops on the roof. >> plus, you have that great segway because you are talking about delays on the road. we are hearing it here on that really cool skylight we have as you walk into the studio. that is what it looks like on first alert doppler. if it is not raining for you yet, it is about to and you can see the last three hours on there. let's get specific. if we posit like this, you can see what the rain looks like. that is the good line coming in across the city. upstream, there was a lot more on that will be coming our way. let's take that line. it works its way along 101 through sonoma county. we are looking at 4:30. we are still seeing the main band , kind of focused on the northbay. as we go through the

afternoon, now we will see those showers working across the heart of the bay. we are looking at 6:45 in the evening when we see some of the better organized rain bands move across the city and then it goes from there. you will see steady rain. we are in the 10:00 hour already. then we are back here by 2:00 a.m. that is the exact timing that the forecast models had on this yesterday. it has not budged at all. the totals are a little lower. about a quarter inch of rain in the northbay. take a look at the south bay, the numbers should be pretty similar to that. bottom line, it is enough to get the streets slick tonight. we are not worried about flooding. there is not even a significant wind component although it will get a few -- a bit breezy. it will snow in the sierra but not super impressive. we will get a couple inches on donner pass but that will impact anyone who needs to drive over the

mountains tomorrow night. that covers what is going on with this system. let's take one other look at the forecast for tomorrow. we are done with the rain tomorrow. it has a chance to clear out. you will be looking at daytime highs in the low 60s. these numbers apply to wednesday, wednesday afternoon typically right around 3:00, 4:00 . let's look ahead. wednesday and thursday are both pretty easy. there is not a whole lot going on. by friday, the next system gets here. let's pull backup the forecast imagery to find the next storm. when we do that, we can see there is a series of them. it will be busy starting friday . the first system shows -- the best way to do this is bring the forecast ahead to friday. you have one storm here and then there is a couple of them lurking out here. that is the friday system. we can use the longer-range models to get a good idea for how this would go. if we take the friday system and play that forward, that one comes on shore and

then it just looks like a mess from there all the way through monday. the key with a forecast like this is not to get too tied into timing but rather to come away with the notion that starting friday and going through monday, we have a decent amount of rain coming and there will be brakes. at this point it looks like saturday might be one of the better days in between systems but if we look at the rainfall totals, here is friday. plan on most of the day friday picking up half inch of rain. saturday, there are still some left over showers. at this point, saturday looks like it will be the in between day. by sunday, the next system gets here. the totals really go up. monday it is still lingering. when you add it all up friday through monday, we are looking at the potential of 3 inches or so coming our way. it is going to be busy. by the time we get there, we will turn all of our attention to those approaching systems for friday through the weekend and start getting real

specific once we get through today. by that point, we are getting close to the three day window where forecast accuracy and detail can really go up. over the next several hours, we will be focused on the rain today and we will have much more on that as we track that through the evening. do you have a trip planned from sfo? get ready for some delaying. starting on thursday, the airport will close one of its longest runways for safety improvements. as shawn chitnis reports, they are already warning travelers to pack their patients. >> it is starting to pick up this morning. we have seen more cancellations and delays here at sfo. the goal of this project is to improve how planes exit the runway and make it easier and safer. of the project will realign two taxiways and require one way to be closed for at least five months. people will have to reconstruct two taxiways so they don't intersect. the airport will improve safety and bring the runways to the latest

standard. through april, sfo anticipates that one third of its flights will be delayed 30 to 60 minutes, especially during peak time periods. airlines are captivating with the impact will be for may and june but we do know this will be for both domestic and international flights. we had a chance to hear from a couple of passengers and get their early reaction as this project begins. >> i always take the first flight out in the morning because the plane is already here and there is usually not a problem. coming home will be a challenge, i think. >> fortunately, most of the time, we are not changing planes. if i do change a plane, it will be a mess. >> again, the focus is on how the planes exit after they land. the project will cost $55 million and it is federally funded. they hope to have it done by july 1 so they can

avoid any issues with the independence day holiday weekend. the runway project comes after a new study last month found sfo runways are sinking at a faster rate compared to 15 other coastal u.s. airports. first lady dr. jill biden will be touching down in the bay area later on today. she will be making a series of campaign stops. the first lady will attend fundraisers in san francisco as well as southern california. it is all part of a four day tour ending in columbus, ohio on sunday. the race to replace congresswoman anna as she is heating up with some candidates announcing some key endorsements. today, san jose mayor matt mahan officially endorsed former mayor sam liccardo. tran23 had endorsed mahan in the mayoral race. >> sam understands that homelessness has many, many causes. he pushed us to get out of our comfort zone, do

something differently, more cost-effectively, more creatively to address the crisis we see on our streets every day. our local governments need a national partner so that we are addressing these issues from every angle. >> one of liccardo 's opponents, evan low, also announced a key endorsement. he has the support of california legislative caucus. low is also a member of that caucus. santa clara supervisor joe simitian and councilwoman julie lythcott-haims are also running for the seat. congresswoman anna eshoo has been in the district since 1992. she announced last year that she would not run for re-election. still ahead, a close call for drivers in the san francisco. a woman describes the moment a giant tree crashed on top of her car. it could cost apple billions of dollars. the move from the supreme court regarding the company's app

crushed a car. we spoke to one woman who was inside one of those cars when the tree fell out of nowhere. >> it was slow motion coming down and then as soon as that tree falls on you, everything goes silent. >> sandy young was enjoying the holiday off with her family, heading to the mall for some fun when a massive eucalyptus tree crashed on top of their car. >> it was back to back traffic. the next thing you know, i could see -- i was on the back passenger side and i could see the eucalyptus tree and the light post come crashing down on our car. >> sandy says her first instinct was to check on her kids and her husband. thankfully, she says everyone was okay but the front of their car was crushed .

>> some gentleman from the car behind us rushed over and opened the car door and got us out. my daughter came after me and then my husband and my son had to climb from the front seat into the backseat to get out. >> san francisco fire says the tree hit five cars with 11 people inside. miraculously, every single person walked away from the scene. only two had minor injuries. >> it is important to know that these vehicles were in motion when this tree fell down. had this tree fallen just a second later, we would be looking at a much worse scene behind us than what we are seeing right now. >> sandy says she understands that. that is why she is so thankful everyone is okay. >> even all the cars around us, nobody was hurt. i think we had a guardian angel watching over us today. >> unbelievable. just last year, a tree toppled across brotherhood way during a powerful storm and crashed into the car of a san francisco police sergeant who suffered serious injuries. google just announced a new

round of layoffs . this will affect hundreds of employees in its advertising sales team. the tech giant cut more than 700 positions last week including engineers and people working with augmented reality. google says those impacted by the most recent layoffs can apply for open roles within the company. the supreme court dealing a big blow to apple. the court is allowing a court order to take effect that will let app developers use payment methods other than apple. apple generally takes a 30% cut of inapt purchases. the company estimated that developers generated $1.1 trillion in the app store alone in 2022. uber is shutting down the alcohol delivery service drizly. uber bot drizly in 2021. it will now be integrated into uber eats. uber says the move allows them to get anything using a single app.

drizly will operate on its own through the end of march. the cowboys are not coming to town. 49ers fans were hoping to see them later on in the playoffs but instead, one of their other longtime rivals is coming to town this week. >> this is the volkswagen red and gold report. >> the 49ers are 10 point favorites saturday night. they have never lost a playoff game at levi's stadium. that includes a win against the packers in the 2019 nfc championship. they also know they can't overlook a green bay team that dropped 48 points on the cowboys. >> i feel like we have had the best team in the last three or four years. it is not about having the best team but it is about how could you can play in those three hours.
