and asking for secrecy. hear what lloyd austin's aide told a 911 operator that led to the secretary of defense's two-week hospital stay. good morning, and of course good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin this morning with the presidential race. all eyes are on new hampshire, and now after donald trump's massive win in iowa, he is hoping that victory will propel him yet to another win later on -- rather, next week. ron desantis and nikki haley are looking to get their own boost from voters in the granite state. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with the latest on the campaign trail. it's good to have you in the studio. >> good to be here. there's a lot going on with this. with only three candidates in this race, we are seeing them sharpening attacks against each other. new hampshire is going to be an interesting state here, where polling is tighter than in iowa. it could be a last chance for

haley and desantis to slow the trump train. this morning all eyes on new hampshire. former president donald trump in the granite state touted his decisive win in the iowa caucuses taking aim at third-place finisher nikki haley. >> nikki haley in particular -- [ boos ] -- is counting on the democrats and liberals to infiltrate the primary. >> reporter: recent polling showing the former u.n. ambassador in a much tighter race with trump here as she hopes to tap into the independent or undeclared voters who make up more than 39% of registered voters. >> we have to leave the negativity and baggage behind and go forward with new solutions for the future. >> reporter: a debate set for thursday was canceled after haley refused to take the stage without trump who skipped every debate so far. the former president spent yesterday morning in a new york courtroom for the second civil defamation suit brought against him by writer e. jean carroll. back on the campaign trail, florida governor ron desantis also took aim at haley, first during a quick campaign stop in

her home state of south carolina, then again at a town hall in new hampshire. >> she does not have the ability to build the type of coalition that you need to win a republican primary, period. >> reporter: the republican field continues to shrink. former arkansas governor asa hutchinson and businessman vivek ramaswamy dropping out this week. ramaswamy appearing with trump last night. >> i'm still the only person to beat donald trump. >> reporter: president biden jumped into the fray with an instagram post touting his 2020 win over trump. so the new hampshire primary is scheduled for tuesday coming up. and this could be especially interesting, different in iowa. you have those undeclared and independent voters allowed to vote in the gop primary. we know that haley's been courting that group in particular. >> yes, that's very, very true. it should be -- we're all going to be watching. it will be interesting. thank you so much. so now to the dangerous frigid weather. most of us are dealing with. at least 17 deaths blamed on the snow and the cold.

here comes round four. a powerful storm, ice storm is moving across oregon where tens of thousands of homes and businesses are still without power after the last storm. the portland area and much of western oregon expected a total of a quarter to three quarters of an inch of ice, potentially causing more downed trees and power lines. cbs' nikki battiste has more on the dangerous weather around the country. >> reporter: the arctic blast along with high winds and blinding snow swept through the northeast. the extreme cold and snow forcing airlines to cancel or delay flights. at new york's laguardia airport more than 200 escalations -- cancelations. how are you feeling? >> frustrated. i was crying down at baggage claim. >> i'm frustrated, too. handling all of it's been really stressful. >> reporter: in nashville a ground stop on monday left hundreds of passengers stuck on the tarmac, some for almost seven hours after de-icing trucks ran out of fuel. >> we were left to wait and not

know what was coming there. >> reporter: it's a mess throughout the midwest. at chicago's o'hare airport, negative 20-degree windchills are hampering operations. roxana saberi is there. >> reporter: two of the biggest airlines told cbs news the cold here can take a toll on equipment, batteries, and staff. but winter weather elsewhere is also leading to delays and cancelations here. >> reporter: trouble on the rails, too, as crews in chicago worked through the night setting fire to train tracks to get rid of ice build-up. some tesla drivers are struggling to charge their vehicles saying the cold is draining their batteries. >> i've been here for over five hours at this point. >> reporter: the south is also getting hit with unusually frigid conditions. icy roads wreaking havoc in alabama. this semi slipping and sliding along the highway. in houston there's been more than 100 ice-related accidents since midnight. back on the east coast, cities like new york, philadelphia, and

washington, d.c., saw their first significant snowfall in more than 700 days. along with those cancelations there have been 500 delays at laguardia airport leaving many travelers stuck here overnight. one group of women standed here for their second night told me they are tired and frustrated, but they say weather is weather. nikki battiste, cbs news, laguardia airport. now to the rising tensions in the middle east. the biden administration is expected to redesignate the houthi rebels in yemen as a terrorist organization. this as the first medication for israeli hostages is expected to enter gaza today on their 103rd day in captivity. france and qatar announced the deal between israel and hamas to let in the medicine along with additional aid for palestinians. meanwhile, a group of freed hostages gathered at their kibbutz near the gaza border for a solemn 1st birthday

celebration for the youngest hostage. kafir will turn 1 tomorrow at which point he would have spent a third of his life as a hostage. and the israeli army released new video it says shows the vast hamas tunnel system. they estimate the tunnels have more than 5,000 entry points and stretch as far as 450 miles which is much longer than originally thought considering gaza is only 25 miles long and six miles wide. charlie d'agata has the latest on the widening conflict. >> reporter: the assault of gaza continued, but israel's fight against hamas has triggered a dramatic escalation in attacks across the region. off the coast of yemen, new video shows iranian-backed houthis in a song and dance with new recruits aboard the galaxy leader cargo ship. seized back in november, now turned into part trophy part floating amusement park off the coast of yemen.

and a propaganda tool used to make a mockery of the american-led threats. but following last week's u.s.-uk bombardment, those threats turned to action again. the u.s. military says fighter jets struck four anti-ship ballistic missiles preparing to launch from houthi territory in yemen. barely 24 hours after an attack greek-owned ship was struck by a houthi missile in the red sea. near the coast of somalia, the u.s. military released these new images, iranian supply warheads and missile parts confiscated from this ship headed to houthi militants in yemen in an operation in which two navy s.e.a.l.s were lost at sea. at the world economic forum in davos, switzerland, white house national security adviser jake sullivan said this goes beyond a regional problem. >> this is a global challenge. we're talking about a vital

artery of global commerce. a critical maritime choke point that's being held hostage. >> reporter: despite u.s.-led attempts, the houthis say they'll keep hitting that choke point as long as israel keeps hitting gaza and there's no sign of either of those battles coming to an end any time soon. the israeli military has begun withdrawing a significant amount of troops out of northern gaza, but we went to that border and saw the iron dome in action, intercepting hamas rockets even as israeli soldiers pulled back. charlie d'agata, cbs news, tel aviv. back home there's new information on defense secretary lloyd austin's secret trip to walter reed medical center on new year's day. cbs news has obtained the 911 call where an aide is heard asking the dispatcher to keep the emergency discreet. >> can i ask, like can the

ambulance not show up with lights and sirens? we're trying to remain a little subtle. >> yeah. i understand. yeah. usually when they turn into a residential neighborhood they'll turn them off. but they are required by law to come with them on the main street. >> austin was taken to the hospital due to complications from prostate cancer surgery nearly two weeks earlier. president biden and senior administration officials did not find out that he was in the hospital for three days. the pentagon's inspector general is investigating why it took so long for austin to disclose his hospitalization. austin is back home and recovering. coming up, new body cam video of a police raid in ohio that a woman claims injured her baby son. and a suspected serial killer in new york faces an additional murder charge. o. but he's still living in the red. with a very high risk of another attack. with his risk factors his recommended ldl-c level should be below 55. find out if you're living in the red.

a raid at a house in ohio that the family claims was at the wrong address. the city of elyria released the video yesterday. a mother claims the flash bang explosion police set off injured her 17-month-old son who was on a ventilator at the time. police say the search warrant was executed to the -- at the correct house. the club q shooter is expected to plead guilty to hate crime charges, and a new development in a new york serial murder investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "cbs news new york" reports suspected gilgo beach serial killer rex heuermann was charged in the murder of a fourth woman. heuermann is accused of killing 25-year-old maureen brainard barnes who vanished in 2007. her remains were found more than three years later along a coastal highway near long island's gilgo beach. barnes' daughter was 7 years old when her mother disappeared.

>> while the loss of my mom has been extremely painful for me, the indictment by the grand jury has brought hope for justice for my mom and my family. >> investigators say dna testing from a hair found at the scene linked heuermann to the murder. he's pleaded not guilty to the murders of three other women whose remains were found in the same area. "the denver post" says the shooter who killed five people at a colorado lgbtq nightclub is expected to plead guilty to dozens of federal hate crime charges. anderson aldritch is already serving multiple life sentences for the 2022 mass shooting at club q that also injured more than 20 people. court records show he plans to plead guilty and avoid the death penalty. and "the baltimore sun" says a 10-year-old maryland boy was attacked by a shark at a resort in the bahamas. police say the boy was bitten on his right leg monday while he was in a shark tank -- at a shark tank exhibit at a resort in paradise island. he was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. authorities have not identified the resort where this happened.

costco is cracking down on membership sharing, and more financial help is on the way for families struggling to make ends meet. here's shanelle kaul in today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks dropped tuesday after the federal reserve confirmed rate cuts are coming but didn't say when. the dow lost 231 points. the nasdaq was down by 28, and the s&p 500 lost 17 points. good news for parents. congress has agreed to expand the child tax credit meaning more american families will qualify. taxpayers will be able to use income from either the current or prior year, and the calculation to determine the credit will be changed to help more poor families receive more money. the center on budget and policy priorities estimates around 16 million kids from low-income families would benefit from the new deal. a major airline deal is blocked. a federal judge ruled tuesday that jetblue's proposed $3.8 billion buyout of spirit
