frigid temperatures and winter storm after winter storm hammering nearly every corner of the country, making everyday activities dangerous and even deadly. but first, the countdown to new hampshire. the first primary turning into a two-person race between a former president and his former u.n. ambassador. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. five days and counting until new hampshire's gop primary. donald trump is considered the frontrunner there, though nikki haley is counting on independents to pull her out of perhaps her first victory. while florida governor ron desantis is already shifting his focus. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with the latest on all of this. hello. >> hey, we are seeing both nikki haley and ron desantis look for any way they can to really find a way to break through here. despite some positive signs for both, data shows this is still trump's race to lose.

baloney, bogus hogwash. >> reporter: on "the view" vice president vice president said she's, quote, scared of heck of another trump victory. >> we don't run when we scared. we fight against it. >> reporter: it comes as maine's superior court paused an order blocking trump from the state's primary ballot at least until the u.s. supreme court weighs in on a similar case from colorado. a new poll out just yesterday shows that while nikki haley has picked up seven points since last week in new hampshire, so has former president trump. so that coming on the heels of the iowa caucuses. again, there's a lot of ground to make up if haley wants to have a good showing in new hampshire. >> yes, and we'll be watching. thank you, jarred. turning now to this relentless, miserable string of winter storms that's been hammering the country from coast to coast. dozens have been killed, including two adults and a teenager in portland yesterday when a live power line fell on their car. a baby was injured but survived. 41 million americans in 24 states, half of the lower

states, have winter weather alerts. and ten million in the plains are under windchill alerts. here's cbs' carter evans from hard-hit portland. >> reporter: the deadly cold snap continues to grip the nation with dozens of weather-related deaths so far, many caused by hypothermia and crashes on the road. among the victims, five family members in northeastern pennsylvania, all killed after being struck by a tractor-trailer. so far at least ten have died in oregon after a string of storms plunged parts of the state into a deep freeze. up to a quarter inch of ice made driving treacherous around portland. these are the icy streets that everyone in this community is facing right now. it is a complete sheet of ice. it feels like the car is in an ice-skating rink. heavy winds toppled more than 300 trees. mark christiansen's truck took a double hit. >> one right on the front, one on the back bumper.

>> reporter: the winter blast knocked out power to nearly 76,000 oregon customers. this family have had no electricity for five days. >> our kitchen is 30 degrees right now. all my fish are dead, and i had ball pythons as pets that are dead. so it's -- it's sad. >> reporter: a third of the flights out of portland were canceled today. in buffalo, new york, plows are battling lake-effect snowfall up to four inches an hour, more than two feet could blanket the region by thursday. snow also fell further south in knoxville, tennessee, where it caused this boat dock to collapse. and in several cities including bellingham, washington, schools were closed. residents urged to stay close to home and stay safe. this is the damage homeowners are dealing with in the portland area. many still do not have power, and so far 18 people have been treated at local emergency rooms for carbon monoxide poisoning. firefighters say some of them used generators and propane

stoves to stay warm. carter evans, cbs news, portland. >> reporter: breaking overnight, the growing violence in the middle east. pakistan says it launched retaliatory air strikes on iran raising tensions between the neighboring countries and raising the threat of a wider conflict in the region. pakistan says it targeted terrorist activities in sistan and baluchestan province. the iranian officials say that seven people were killed, and they were not iranian citizens. the attack comes a day after pakistan recalled its ambassador to tehran because of tuesday's strikes by iran inside pakistan. now the u.s. military launched another round of strikes against houthi targets in yemen. the u.s. says forces took out 14 missiles loaded and ready to fire. this is coming after the houthis hit a u.s. cargo ship. the u.s. has also strongly warned iran to stop providing weapons to the houthis. as for the war between israel and hamas, a shipment of

medicine for the hostages still in captivity arrived in gaza. it's not clear when the drugs would be delivered or how the hand-over would be verified. a senior hamas official said that for every box provided for the hostages, 1,000 boxes of medicine would be sent to palestinians along with humanitarian aid. funding for israel was one of the topics discussed as president biden met with top congressional leaders at the white house over a stalled national security package. the $110 billion measure also includes aid for ukraine in its war with russia, funding for other allies and money for security at the u.s. southern border. republicans want tougher measures at the border and a change in u.s. immigration policies before they'll support the package. >> we must insist that the border be the top priority. i think we have some consensus around the table. everyone understands the urgency of that. >> it was a very good meeting and a very positive meeting. there was a large amount of

a dangerous rescue mission as kentucky state police used a helicopter to get to four college students stranded atop a gorge in bad weather. during a camping trip last weekend, the asbury university students climbed up the gorge but determined it was too dangerous to come down when it snowed overnight. the helicopter managed to land on top of the rock monday as the snow fell. the students were cold, but otherwise they were okay. demolition has begun at the tree of life synagogue, and a new report on a texas school shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports the u.s. justice department is set to release its reports today on the slow police response to the 2022 uvalde school shooting. u.s. attorney general merrick garland visited the town yesterday, getting a firsthand look at the faces of the 21 lives lost that day. hundreds of heavily armed officers waited more than an hour to confront the shooter after he entered robb elementary school.

the justice department has said its investigation would provide an independent account of law enforcement actions and response that day. victims' families met with the attorney general behind closed doors last night to get a preview. 19 children and two teachers were killed. a u.s. border patrol team eventually killed the gunman. "the pittsburgh post gazette" says demolition is under way at the site of the deadliest anti-semitic attack in u.s. history. crews began dismantling the tree of life synagogue yesterday. most of the building will be removed to make way for a memorial honoring the 11 people killed in 2018 during the mass shooting. it will include spaces for worship, a museum, an education center, and a move theater. protection bureau is new proposing new rules that would lower overdraft fees. the current average fee is $26 with some banks charging as much as $39. critics argue the fees disproportionately affect the most cash-strapped consumers which president biden calls exploit tafb. under the white house's plan overdraft fees could drop to as low as $3. imports of some new apple watch models have been banned in america again. a federal appeals court denied the tech company's request to pause the u.s. international trade commission's ban during the appeal process. the ban of imports of the apple watch series 9 and apple watch ultra 2 took effect last month after the itc found the products violated patents. and apple rival samsung has now revealed its latest lineup of wearable tech and smartphones. the gayle access s-24 series
