aine. but their time is running out and we need you to act now. we pray, that you will be a blessing to these forgotten jews. the preceding program was sponsored by the international fellowship of christians and jews. f0 we're getting ready for a wet and windy weekend. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey alongside paul. get used to him, get used to the rain because we're just at the
2:07 am
beginning of what will be a wet weekend, and not just rain. >> right. rain, heavy rain, some wind. lit breaks in between. so it's not raining everywhere all the time. but yeah, not the weekend for outdoor activities or for -- >> which is a shame because we have one major outdoor activity happening in the bay area. >> that looks okay. it's football. it's not, you know, baseball or hockey. that's why they don't have the winter classic around here. here's the big picture pattern across the bay area. it's been a generally wet evening, and there are still plenty of showers out there. but the heaviest rain has pushed farther off to the east. this is the kind of shower activity we'll see through the rest of the night. zooming in for a closer look. slightly heavier downpours for parts of the north bay. one about to move into santa rosa. some making their way into the mountains of northern napa county. it's lighter shower activity in marin county and san pablo bay.
2:08 am
there's more showers falling right now in the santa cruz mountains. some trying to make its way into the santa clara valley. most of it getting squeezed out over the higher terrain. as we put everything in motion, you can see the bulk of heavier rain to the east and southeast. there will be off and on shower activity at every point during the weekend. even as the rain chances continue to diminish throughout the rest of the night, there are still going to be showers dotting the radar at every point overnight. even when the rain chances are at the lowest, they won't be zero. scattered showers to start the day saturday. this hit or miss activity is what we'll see most of the day. inconvenient for outdoor plans. and the showers become more widespread into the afternoon. and this area of rain is what's going to be moving over it will bay area just in time for kickoff tomorrow evening. now, it's not going to be as heavy as the rain that came across the bay area during rush hour this evening, but light to
2:09 am
occasionally moderate rain is possible. hopefully that impacts the packers more than the 49ers. the winds strong, but not too noticeable during the game. they pick up more overnight into sunday morning. there's heavier rain on the way sunday night into early monday. that's when we have to worry about the flooding potential. more on that coming up. >> all right, paul, thank you. people are getting ready for this. store fronts lined with sandbags in the mission district in san francisco a little earlier. some were using plastic flood barriers. and one of the most obnoxious things about storms like these are the risk of nasty potholes. tonight on 280 in daly city, a big one caused drivers to blow out their tires and get stuck on the side of the highway. that's never good. the north bay, though, is expected to get hit the hardest. our andrea nakano is in santa rosa tonight with how people are getting ready for a long weekend of downpours. >> reporter: the storm didn't stop these soccer players from hitting the the pitch, it also didn't stop dedicated parents
2:10 am
from cheering on their daughters. >> we're dressed. we have the ski clothes on, the gorton's fishermen here basically in fishing rubbers. >> reporter: gray saunders says it was worse last season when we were hit be one atmospheric river after another. she has no complaints about the rain. >> we're happy to have it. we need it. it keeps us out of drought and fire. a lot of the families farm, we need it. we welcome the rain. >> reporter: the rain did bring the evening commute to a crawl throughout the bay area, including here on the richmond san rafael bridge. there haven't been any major flooding issues, and the fire marshal with the santa rosa fire department hopes it will stay that way. >> with this storm, although we're expecting anywhere from 3.5 to 5 inches over the duration of the entire storm, that's spread out over several days. if we expected that in a 24 hour period or two-day period, that's a lot of rain
2:11 am
and would likely create a lot of issues. >> reporter: the main concern with this rain is that the surround is already soaked and winds could knock down trees and power lines. >> the storms essentially take their toll in the sense they start to lead to soil saturation. >> reporter: for many of the residents in the area who have experienced fires, they'd rather have too much rain than worry about fire danger. saunders is ready for a full season of wet weather. >> we're just getting started. these will stay in the trunk for the next game. >> reporter: good news in santa rosa is conditions are improving in burn scar areas. in fact, the santa rosa fire department recently took down warnings of possible mudslides where the glass fire burned in 2020. you heard paul talking at the top of the show about it being wet and windy at levi stadium tomorrow, at least in pockets. you probably should bring a poncho to the game. obviously the postseason rivalry between the niners and
2:12 am
packers back on in this playoff showdown. niners superfans were out in full force in san jose tonight. our mary lee got in on the action with a little help from sourdough sam. >> reporter: you know how loyal the 49ers fans are. the faithful showed up and represented out here in downtown san jose for the 49ers rally. we are cheering on our ninners. check it out. >> let's go niners! >> reporter: from the cheers. >> let's go! let's go niners, baby! >> reporter: to the dancing. >> yeah, let's go, baby! >> reporter: it was an all out red and gold party. mike has been a 49ers fan since 1972. he says red and gold runs through his veins. >> from the very beginning, it always felt like we were part
2:13 am
of a family. once you get into it. i live and die with them. >> reporter: the faithful lined up in the rain to support the team. they said nothing could keep them away. >> it's worth it. >> yeah, it's worth it. so we get a little wet. it'll be fine. >> we'll dry. we've had pouring torrential rains during the games, so this is nothing. >> the faithful shows up anywhere and everywhere. it doesn't matter what city, what stadium. we all come in force for the niner empire, and we're faithful until the day we die. >> reporter: former niners running back frank gore was at the rally signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. saturday's game is the tenth playoff meeting between the 49ers and the green bay packers. the most in nfl history. fans say they're excited for the niners to beat the packers. >> okay, so this is one of the last bags they gave out at candle stick before they shut down. then we went to the playoffs against the packers.
2:14 am
that's when we sent the packers packing. so we'll send them packing again from levi stadium this time, though. it will be a great game. go niners! see you at the super bowl in vegas. >> reporter: what do you think about the packers? >> eh, they're young, and we need to smack them down and they need to learn. >> oh my gosh, they're serious! tonight we did not think that packers fans needed too many reasons to escape green bay, after all it is 7 degrees there tonight. a lot of them did get out to travel to the beautiful mild, though rainy, bay area. and they ended up at a packed pep rally at a palo alto sports bar, go figure. our jose martinez was there. >> reporter: it's clearly friday night here in palo alto. i'm in this iconic establishment, the patio, setting the stage for an unforgettable night for many packers fans gathered here to enjoy a pre-game celebration
2:15 am
ahead of tomorrow's game against the 49ers. [ cheering ] >> we live here. family coming all the way from wisconsin. go pack go. got my kids here. we're having a blast. we're super excited. love how the team's performed this year. great fan base. couldn't be a better organization. love it. >> i'm from milwaukee, wisconsin, and i'm out here to represent tonight. every time we have this match up, i have high hopes. i'm hoping for a win this year. >> reporter: and of course, this excitement is all over the bay area tonight. it will be a fun weekend for everybody, including us because we'll be hanging out here with everybody. everyone's excited for that game. less than 24 hours away as the niners host the green bay packers. and listen, there are three easy keys to ensure a 49ers win to send them to the nfc championship game.
2:16 am
i'll reveal them later in the show. >> coach matt lively, love to see it! okay, you know these football fans are loyal when they show up to the stadium and answer the call to do something that most people dread in the winter. and it's scary enough seeing a plane on fire, but imagine what it was like inside the cockpit. the recordings of a scary moment for a cargo jet. and something just happened to this unusual chicago landmark in the pavement, and it is so distressing to some people, even lawmakers are getting involved.
2:17 am
this is truly wild video. this is a plane in the sky on fire over a major city. haven't seen anything like that before. this boeing 747 cargo jet made an emergency landing thursday night when one of its engines caught fire after taking off from miami. thankfully nobody got hurt, but tonight we have a recording
2:18 am
from the cockpit the moment the pilots realized something was very wrong. >> may day, may day. 095 has an engine fire. we have five souls on board. >> they stayed calm. that's what they're trained to do. the faa is trying to determine what happened, but investigators found a softball sized hole above the second engine. >> watch your step right here. big one. and this was another scary flight. 53 passengers had to be evacuated after their plane skidded off the runway in new york. the american airlines flight landed in rochester on a snow-covered runway. firefighters helped everyone off. thankfully no one got hurt. obviously those are the risks of the weather in other parts of the country this time of year. for us, we're focused on the wind and rain. obviously there are some risks we face in those situations, paul. downed trees, power outages, that sort of thing. that's the kind of thing we'll be facing down sunday
2:19 am
night into early monday. this evening's rain was just enough to add some moisture to the ground. not a lot in the santa clara valley. 0.04 inches in san jose. just barely more than a trace. about a quarter inch for downtown san francisco, half inch for half moon bay. three quarters of an inch for other areas. here's what to know heading into a generally wet weekend for the next few days. off and on showers tonight and through the first half of the day tomorrow. then light to moderate rain will kick in through saturday evening and the first half of saturday night. then back to off and on showers through much of the day sunday. but the heaviest rain moves in late sunday. mainly sunday evening, sunday night, continuing into drive time monday morning. that's when localized flooding will be possible and the possibility of power outages.
2:20 am
but it's not nearly the impactful event we had on several occasions last january and again last march. right now more shower activity on doppler radar, but the heavier rain around rush hour is now done for the next several hours. the showers become more sparse through the rest of tonight. but still, i mentioned this earlier, our lowest rain chances this weekend won't be zero. at no point can i guarantee dry weather the next few days. off and on showers more miss than hit the first half of the day tomorrow, then the more widespread rain moves in. it will be wet tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. then that tapers off to off and on showers through much of the day on sunday. but the heavier rain sunday night looming offshore as we head towards sunset sunday afternoon. then there's already been outlined a slight risk of excessive rainfall. that sounds reassuring, but what it means is there's an elevated threat of too much rain in a short amount of time on to already wet ground, and that brings in the possibility of localized
2:21 am
flooding. let's talk about how much rain we expect as we add it up through the middle of next week. the rainy pattern will continue through wednesday. we're talking about an inch and a half of rain or close to it. even the rain shadowed spots in the santa clara valley. little over an inch and a half of rain for much of the east bay. similar amounts for fremont and redwood city. higher amounts for san francisco. close to 2.5 inches of rain. over 2.5 inches for half moon bay. and the the highest amounts will be for the north bay and the higher elevations. the communities of the north bay and lower elevations picking up 2.5 to 3 inches. 4 to 6 inches of rain for coastal sonoma county and for parts of the santa cruz mountains as well. let's take a look at the snowy part of this system. winter storm warning in effect for the high sierra through monday evening. that's going to be the real high elevations that will be feeling the main snowy impact of this. above 7,000 feet. kind of a rain-snow messy mix around tahoe. check out the seven-day
2:22 am
forecast. no big changes to the day-to-day temperatures, but all the action is towards the beginning of seven-day forecast. saturday and sunday and monday. it's not going to rain everywhere all the time, but a wet pattern especially sound night into monday. then we dry out tuesday temporarily. more rain showers by wednesday. those should be lighter. then a couple of drier days in the forecast thursday and friday. even warming up a little bit. maybe returning to golfing weather by the end of next week if you don't mind squishing through the wet ground. >> for packers fans, that is tropical. go back to your frigid temperatures! all right, paul, thank you. many of us would not know it in the bay area, speaking of frigid temperatures, but shoveling snow is really hard. but hundreds of very loyal football fans jumped at the chance to do it, matt. they jumped. >> yeah, you couldn't find me doing that. there's no shot.

the bills have a problem. it's not the problem that you think i mean. the problem is with where they play. >> snow. >> the stadium just keeps getting buried over and over again. they've got to play the chiefs in just a few days, so they've got work to do. >> yeah, they get shoveling. >> get to shoveling. look at this. the bills have been working for days to clear the

stadium. >> wow! >> i know. they posted these photos today. this was the other day. they still needed extra manpower, so for the second time in a row, they asked the fans to come help dig them out for 20 bucks an hour. hundreds of people showed up. >> of course they did. bills mafia. >> they brought their shovels. some worked 12 hour shifts to help dig out the stadium. >> i just thought it would be fun to come out in the snow and shovel with a bunch of strangers. >> they're coming from everywhere. >> shocked? no. bills mafia, they come out. there's no sugar coating this. there's five plus, maybe six feet of snow in the stands right now. >> don't say anything poorly about bills mafia. they're watching. >> i know, they're watching. listen, i'll say this, this is diplomatic. their idea of fun is very different from my idea of fun. >> yeah, i would say so. but if they're going to shovel their driveway, why not shovel the

bills stadium. >> i mean, if it came with tickets, sure, but i don't think it does. >> 20 bucks an hour. >> the niners have their own weather conditions to deal with. i don't think we can complain. >> yeah. nothing like that. aren't you glad we live in san francisco? >> every day. let's start in palo alto, a chance for history because with a win the stanford head coach would tie legendary duke coach k for most wins in college basketball history, men or women. it was a scary moment for the cardinal where their star left with an injury in the first quarter. but second quarter, stanford up 20. kiki down low and will get the bucket. 21 points, 15 rebounds. the cardinal won, meaning coach tied coach k. she can set the record with a victory against oregon state on sunday. to the nfl. tony can

officially take over the head coach office at the las vegas raiders. pierce had had the support of the raiders to get the full time job. saturday night the niner host the packers in the divisional round. san francisco's first meaningful game in nearly three weeks. as the team switches into playoff mode, christian mccaffrey thinks they'll bring the same intensity as they have since spring workouts. >> obviously the playoffs, this matters. i think guys are obviously extremely anxious to get out on the field and play and excited. but that's what's so cool about the team is whether it was week 4 or 10 or the divisional round, love this team. they come ready to go. >> i'm sure they want my advice on how to win, so here we go. three keys. key one, let christian cook. he could have a historic day. green bay was

28th in run defense this season. two, limit aaron jones. niners haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 44 straight games. jones, however has eclipsed that mark in four straight. when they run it with him, it opens up the passing game for jordan love. and last, you have to make sure this game does not come down to jake moody's leg. he hasn't hit the big kick yet. he's missed a possible game winner. bad conditions. paul has been talking about it. you don't want to let this come down the a rookie kicking a potential game winning folsom. -- game winning field goal. i predict san francisco 30, green bay 21. i have the niners advancing. they've won fourth straight postseason games at levi stadium. >> yeah, i know. i think stats assure some people and make others nervous. i think they make me nervous, but we'll see. you'll be watching. >> if you don't like the stats, look at the talent. the niners have the talent. >> thank you, coach matt. it can be hard enough to

stay off your phone for a day. how about for a whole month? would you do it, though, if there was money on the line?
2:30 am
most of us can't go a few hours without checking our phones, so could you stay off yours for a whole month completely? what if someone gave you 10,000 bucks? that's what yogurt company siggi's dairy is offering people that agree to ditch their phones for 30 days. yes, a yogurt company. why? they say the idea is like dry january where you give up alcohol. instead they're saying this is a digital detox.

i guess they're hoping people will eat more yogurt instead. they have more information on their website. the beauty of online shopping is you don't have to get up and drive to the store and try on clothes in a dusty dressing room. the down side, though, is not knowing whether those clothes will fit when you order them. realizing what you ordered doesn't work and then hauling it back to the post office is a hassle. but the postal service in france has a creative way to save you some time. they've opened changing rooms right in the post office. you just try the thing on, and if it doesn't work, you're already in the post office, and you can mail it back right then and there. hmm. this sidewalk imprint has turned into one of the hottest
