>> how the community is coming together, one year after seven farmworkers were gunned down in half moon bay. a shakeup in the republican race. why ron desantis said he is dropping out , two days before the primary. the championship matchup is set . how the 49ers are getting motivated ahead of the showdown against the detroit lions. welcome to a special edition of cbs news bay area. for the second time, a storm is bringing heavy rain across the bay area. the wet and windy weather knocked down this tree and power pole. this is on socal san jose road. chb is asking drivers to avoid the area while crews work on the downed lines. the rain has been coming down everywhere. there are advisories in effect.

>> it is a flood advisory for the north bay. just one look at why it would be a north bay issue on first alert doppler. you are looking at the last three hours. there has been steady rain coming in over the north bay. there is some lightning. the first thing i want to do is focus on the north bay rain and talk about the impact it has had on the ground. if you look at the yellow and orange, that had implications. just use that virtual map. we are going to show how this played out so differently. >> the rainfall totals, san jose, one hundredth of an inch. redwood city less than 1/10 of an inch. livermore, about 1/10 of an inch. as we go north, look at the number for santa rosa. this is just the last 12 hours. when we look at this,

suspected of shooting someone at a farmworker housing development, south of half moon bay. the male victim is recovering at the hospital. no word on a motive . the sheriff's office believes it was an isolated incident. in and out is closing its location near the oakland airport after 18 years. this spring, over crime. it is located just off interstate 880. in and out said it had been profitable because it is close to the airport but the number of car break-ins and armed robberies made it to unsafe for customers and employees. the final day will be march 24. coming out, we spoke with customers and an employee to get their thoughts on the closure. the path to the presidential nomination is smoother. ron desantis dropped out of the race and endorsed

the former president. he finished a distant second in the iowa caucus last week. that it is polling in single digits. today, he attacked the only other major candidate remaining, nikki haley saying she represents the old republican establishment. she has been gaining in the polls but trump still holds a commanding lead. >> there had to be a first case somewhere. >> we had no idea four years ago how much the pandemic would impact our lives in society. we spoke with one of san francisco's leading experts. he offered insight about the lessons covid taught us. january 30 at 2020 is when the first covid case was reported. since then several million died worldwide. developing vaccines to mitigate the spread.

neighbors in a nevada housing development are locked-in in a fight over a median island. some status unsightly and presents fire danger but the creator said it is simply a natural environment and she's digging in her heels to protect it. john ramos has the story. won 14 years ago, this median island was adopted to become a sanctuary for pollinators. butterflies and ocess, it stirred up a hornets nest of controversy. >> reporter: alameda del prado leads into the pacheco valley neighborhood. they are, the landscaping is orderly with plants arranged in neat rows.

growth stage. >> reporter: kate white is a member of friends of the pacheco valley. they would like to see the median landscape changed. along with the aesthetic concerns, there are worries about the tall and dry grasses that exist in the summer, presenting a fire hazard in case of a mass evacuation. there are plans to even reduce the oleander bushes . >> we are working to reduce the flammable vegetation. except that marsha has custody of one of the islands. >> the fire department sent conflicting messages, recommending changes saying the pollinator median sections could be renovated with an attractive and easily maintained landscape that demonstrates fire smart characteristics. there is a

letter from the same official saying plants away and the knowledge and that fire risk has been significantly reduced by work accomplished by novato fire and ms. masala. >> first they wanted me out of here because of the appearance and that it was the fire hazard. then they went back to appearance and then fire hazard. >> homeowners think she is being stubborn. >> she declined three other places she could grow her wildflowers. we feel it is not very reasonable or considerate. >> reporter: she spent years tending the garden every weekend. it has come to mean a lot to her. >> i am dead serious. this is my mission. >> wearing about critters losing their homes . that is what would happen.

>> reporter: both sides they are willing to compromise but so far no one found that common ground. the city seems reluctant to declare a winner, having to choose between fire safety and nature conservation. she remains on the island, preferring the randomness of nature over the design of man. we are headed to the sierra. more than 7.5 inches of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. the snow labs said that brings the total to nearly 9.5 inches from last night. here is a live look at the snowy conditions from the camera in soda springs. pallets had to darren peck that's tracking the conditions. >> we are going to get to that smell. we have a lot to talk about. it is a pretty impressive rain producer. we still have the entire night to go which will keep raining.

then, there is a small chance for thunderstorms. tomorrow, look at the first alert doppler. that is good for this storm to produce lightning on the leading edge. normally we have to wait until we get to the back edge of the storms. we do have that chance. i will show you that when we get there. first, the whole theme has been the rain going through the north bay. it has been consistent through sonoma county and marin for four or five hours. it has dropped about one inch of rain so far. that line is finally moving south and getting down to the heart of the day . it has implications for how rainy the rest of the evening will be. here is good news. 8:45 in the national weather service allowed flood advisory to expire for sonoma and marin. that was the short term issue. they had enough rain that you

are much more likely to notice flooding of roadways and ponding of water in the low-lying spots up to 8:45. there was a high degree of confidence. they let that expire. they kept the flood watch, the broader watch in place. that goes until 10:00 tomorrow. we will get enough rain between now and that point in time. flooding could occur within this window. right now, that is the take away. let me show you why it would be the north bay. from the city in the east bay south, you don't have any flood concern. the north bay does. we are going back to the virtual map. there is such

an unbalanced display in terms of how the rain has fallen. when we look at most of the communities, whether tri-valley, santa clara were coming along the east bay shore. then all of a sudden you get to the valleys through sonoma, marin and napa. then we get a look at santa rosa. that is well over an inch of rain. big differences. that is where the flooding concern is. let's look ahead. back to the forecast imagery and restart talking about what is next. there is still rain to go. as we go back to the doppler, you see the rain , depicted beautifully on future cast. it doesn't move a lot overnight . as we go into the early morning, this didier dance of

ram that are now focused more over the city, peninsula and south bay, they finally clear by the time we get past eight or nine in the morning. those little isolated dots that are on their own separated, that is those cells of convection. that is where you can get isolated storms which stays with us until 11:00 tomorrow. that will be one of the more exciting parts. most of us won't notice that. tomorrow it could be a brief downpour and allowed show. that is what we will watch for. this is how it is to fall between now and tomorrow. there is still more rain to go. that is live at watch doesn't expire. it will take time for the landscape to avoid the water. you have to let it flow through the creeks and uncontrolled streams. the roadway concerns will be tonight in the darkness and early tomorrow morning. the

rainfall totals for the south bay, no flood concerns. it will be a wet commute . whether or not you are getting your rain, the streets will be selected. there could be low-lying intersections with a bit of water. more snow in the sierra. it is windy. we have had downed trees. you can see why. look at the advisory, it was just located for the coast. the troubling wind was along the coast and in the hills. there is another system that is nowhere near as rainy as this one. i'm just showing you what those totals will be light. we are looking at close to 3 inches total from yesterday's storm and today's storm. wednesday has about one quarter of an inch of rain. we could use a bit of time. let's look at the seven day. you
