the first time i tried to quit vaping, i told myself that it was like a mountain that i had to climb over and once i got to the other side, it would be clear, but i couldn't make it over. what really got me to quit was my little sister. i saw her vaping so i was back in the mountain, but this time she was up there with me. it's weird what you can do for others that you won't do for yourself.

. this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth cook. unsettled conditions on this first alert weather day. the cleanup is on from trees crashing down and flood waters knee-deep. the damage from the north bay to the south bay and when we will see the next round of rain. another business is closing in oakland. it is not for lack of customers, how crime is leading to the shutdown of in-n-out. the 9ers are heading to the championship once again, this time their opponent is no stranger to the bay. thank you for joining us this afternoon. let's first start with our first alert weather day. parts of the bay area are still seeing the threat of flooding and lingering showers. meet me darren peck is in our virtual view studio, darren? >> reporter: we are almost out of the first alert status. we are still looking at good rainfall amounts coming through. one way to get a handle on it is taking a look

at first alert doppler. so, big picture you don't see a lot. if you come in for a close-up look the nature of these being isolated you can see that moving through the north bay. there is one. and, this is the way it is going to go for the first few hours, isolated on-again, off-again showers, watch what happens, high resolution future cast, you can see them on here. beads on there. we will let it play forward and over the next, really, two to three hours sonoma county and napa county will notice one of those if you are going to get it. once you get into the later hours, midnight, a few scattered moving through. not much to that. so, from the rainfall standpoint of what is still to go we are almost entirely done with this system with the exception of a few isolated showers. but, from the amount of water that still needs to move through the landscape and

how much rain we got yesterday and what that means from a flood concern standpoint we are not done yet. it is going to take several hours for all of this. look at the numbers, peta loma, ross up in the mountains of sonoma got 6 inches, pacifica, 6 inches, it is all of the rain coming through sonoma county. one of them, a flood warning f we highlight where the flood warning is right there, that goes until later tonight. we got to get passed about 4:00 in the afternoon before this is going to be allowed to expire. this has to do with the watershed moving out of west county. in fact, one of the streams here that works its way out towards the west edge is just about at flood stage right now. it is peaking. i know the writing is signal on here but it gets us to 2:00 today. you see how the

creek has risen. the areas in orange will show you where you are at flood monitor stage, watch for it to approach its banks, look how quickly that will recede. that is why the flood warning will be allowed to expire in the 4:00 hour, that is the main concern, we will keep an eye on that. for those two reason that is why we are under first alert status. we are fast coming to an end. then we are going to look ahead. the next system gets here oned with. we can see what that one looks like on the big picture. there is a line of rain coming into the north bay. closer inspection shows us as we go into very early wednesday morning we will see a line of showers, marching across the bay as a whole, pretty much, the first half of the day on wednesday. morning commute wednesday will be the likely time to notice this. it is not anything like the rain that we had come through here over the last few days. it will be lighter. rainfall totals on the morning rain, we are looking at a quarter of an inch from that and more snow in the sierra, but not a lot. snow level will get down to 5500 feet and

picking up, perhaps, another couple of inches up at donner pass. nothing too significant there. all right, let's take a look at the seven-day forecast to see how it will all play out for us. wednesday is the day that stands out. that is the day with rain, we just saw it. there is nothing else on here that shows up. we will have a quiet run of weather over the next several days, let's just stay on guard through the rural locations in west county up in sonoma and watch for and rises on streams or creeks that are still approaching some of their banks. all right, liz back to you. >> the storm last night was intense, thank you, darren. here is a look at some of the damage. people in parts of sonoma county are cleaning up after the heavy rain and flooding. residents were told to prepare to evacuate just in case. we saw people waiting in the knee-deep water. you can see even a refrigerator just floating on by. neighbors told us they tried to push some of the leaves so the water can properly drain, we spoke to a man checking up on a friend >> it is a mess. there is

propane tanks, wood, garbage, probably a little sewage that might of spilled onut with that. i would be concerned about that the electrical making a connection. >> meanwhile in santa cruz this apartment complex flooded overnight. you can see several inches of water on the streets there. up to the wheels of the parked cars, heavy rain caused a creek behind the complex to flood. sending the water, then, just rushing in. in san mateo, a big tree fell on top of cars and shutdown a road in the neighborhood. here you can see part of the tree came through the car's sun roof early this morning. traffic was blocked off for hours while they worked to chop up the tree and get it out of there. now, rain on and off this week we have you

covered. check radar. >> the safeway store is going to stay opened through early went25. the store on webster street is set to close in march to make way for housing and commercial space. today, mayor london breed and the city is working with a plan with the site's new owner, they fought for it because it is the only grocery store in the neighborhood. picket lines at csu campuses, the union representing tens of thousands of cal state faculty are demanding a 12% pay raise. school administrators are offering 5%. >> they said 5% and walked out and said imposing a 5% contract on you and they walked out and said we are not going to margin

hampshire. they are allowed to participate in the republican primary. it will be interesting >> very. all right, anne, thank you. all right, oak land is set to lose another business thanks to concerns about crime. the only in-n-out is closing down. they are upset because this is nothing new. >> dozens of cars inching along the drive-thru line and plenty more people inside of the dining room. including loyal customer jan bundie. >> first time i had one of the burgers, oh, my god. >> reporter: he comes twice a week. he is aware of the car break ins in the parking lot, warning signs in front of in-n-out, he has witnessed thieves breaking into a car next to him. >> they have weapon so you don't want to run up and be no hero >>reporter: less than two months ago it happened to his truck when he ate inside. >> they were trying to steal my vehicle, i had a kill switch, they could not get the vehicle

but they took all of my belongings. >> reporter: it cost him about $500 in damage. now his partner stays in the truck while he orders inside. that is why he is not surprised n-n-out in-n-out. >> it is not this, it will be something else tomorrow. >> reporter: these are people's jobs, you know, it is essential to have jobs to spend money in the community. >> reporter: the chronicle reports since 2019 the police recorded over 1300 incidents in and around the fast food restaurant, more than any other location in oakland. most of the reported incidents were car break ins targeting visitors coming through from oakland airport. they have seen armed robberies of customers as well. >> it is terrifying because like it also puts us in danger. >> reporter: this worker says thieves stay away when officers patrol the lot but they are only here for a few hours a day. >> they just look around all of the time and then they see pd

this is why we fight. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message. . on today's health watch, more children are being hospitalized for eating disorders. a new study led by stanford medicine finds the rates climbed 6-7 fold since 2010. now, when we think of eating disorders here is what might come to mind for a lot of people. >> being able to control how i look versus i thought, you know, i was not worth enough or smart enough. so i was like maybe i can be pretty enough. or i can follow these norms that social media set. >> it is a different generation. their ability to cope with things is very

different. they are resilient but they are -- >> while body knowledge can be a factor in some eating disorders some say it is not the only factor. they looked at something called atypical anorexia and avoid ent restrictive food. joining me now is the director of eating disorder outpatient clinic at stanford, thank you for joining us, doctor. >> thank you for having me. >> reporter: how are the conditions different from other eating disorders and what are the health rinks to all of this? >> -- rinks to all of this. >> that is a good question. something important to recognize. when we say atypical anorexia these people have all of the same medical instabilities, the same psychological effects of people we think of having typical anorexia but when you plot them on a growth curb or look at them they look average or

sometimes higher on the growth curve. it is remarkable they can have all of the same suffering and instabilities. >> so what do you attribute to this? social media? since we are talking 2010 where the uptick really started and around that time more and more kids started really using social media. can we blame social media or other factors at play here? >> reporter: it is an excellent question. i think it is multifactorial. there is a clear link with the messages of body image and dissatisfaction in a way our brains are not designed to filter. there is a link between that and disordered eating, we also know that the trauma of the pandemic really seemed to compound all of these other risk factors and things that were playing a role. >> so, what are signs that parents and caregivers can look out for? i know a lot of

adolescents are really good at hiding some of the disordered eating patterns, what are some secret signs to look for? >> reporter: really good question. i think parents have really good pulse on the way that their children are and the way they normally are, if you are sensing any kind of change like it means asking and paying a little more attention, secretive eating like you mentioned is a red flag, eating alone, eating in secret, changes to their normal eating pattern. i don't like that, i prefer not to eat that. probing into why. and the other really important thing is to know that young people 97 their teens, 97 their early 20s are supposed to be gaining weight year over year. it is organ growth, muscle growth, and so if somebody is not gaining weight or if they are losing weight it is important to pay attention to that. >> how do you start the conversation, though? it is a

sensitive topic if you worried your child may have a eating disorder, what do you say first? >> it is a really good question. i always say parents know their kids best. they know what is going to fly and what is not. i would start with i statements, so instead of you, you know, you are making me worried, or something like that, i am noticing this, let's talk a little bit more about it. using open-ended questions, and creating that space that a young person can share. something that i often come back to is if we were to go out and survey the entire population about 10% of people would meet criteria for a eating disorder. and probably up to a third of people we talk to would have something that they were suffering from. so i might even start with, this is an incredibly common issue, i know it effects people that you might know or might effect you. can we talk about it. >> i know for caregivers it can be really hard to understand

why your child is exhibiting this behavior, harmful to themselves and the parents and caregivers feel angry, they feel sad, confused. obviously fear for their child's health. what do you tell caregivers and how to best understand why their child is doing this? >> oh, my gosh, such a good question. i think it is important to recognize it is not something that a young person could choose or control. who would choose this for their lives, knowing it really is something that is separate from your loved one from your child, but they can not control and they need help to be able to defeat. i think it is really important. and then i would praise any parent who is even willing to think about it or have that hard conversation that you already halfway won the battle that you recognized it is san issue and needs to be addressed. >> all right, such important information, thank you very much >> my pleasure. coming up, the home game for the niners this sunday. it is is always a homecoming for
