california jail. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey >> hello, i'm sara donchey. we are coming out of days of rain in the bay area. that is not without its problems, more on that in a minute but this rain has been dumped all up and down the state. southern california has seen the worst, specifically in san diego. they had extreme flash flooding, tonight we are getting a clear picture of how bad things got. >> this is insane. >> southern california deluged. this car, washed into a fast-moving storm channel, we don't know if anyone was inside. >> everything under water inside here. >> reporter: homes, the water, knee-deep, these pets had to be carried out of the floods. hundreds of drivers were stranded, too. nowhere to go. and others rushed to escape their own homes in chest-deep

water. the damage to houses and cars is breathtaking. a photojournalist in southeastern san diego documented major destruction from flooding that left a neighborhood trashed. the flood waters were so forceful they seemed to push a garage here. i don't know if they parked the cars in the front. >> the southern border, they had to rescue migrants who were stranded as they crossed into the u.s. from mexico. >> how did things get so bad down south. >> just the heaviest rain with the system just concentrated specifically over a densely populated urban area that is not able to absorb that amount of water. specifically san diego, this is the fifth wettest day in san diego. take a look at the satellite and replay over the past 24 hours, we are looking at the entire state. the loop will move through. it came through the bay area. all of the rain,

concentrating on san diego, it started to loosen our weather, but it left quite a bit of rain around the bay area, now we are seeing fog developing, four inches of rain far san rafael, and 3-1/2 for santa rosa. napa picking up 2-1/2 inches of rain. all of these amounts added up since friday. the bulk of it did fall yesterday evening into last night. it is almost erased the rainfall deficit for much of the bay area. in fact, a surplus of rainfall in this point in the water year for santa rosa and in san jose. sara, we have more rain chances in the forecast as we head through the rest of this week. i will track those coming up in the full forecast. >> we had the bear the brunt of all of the rain in the bay area, sounds like people in the north bay had it tough. kenny choi is there tonight with their story.

>> reporter: george has been shoveling most of the day and into the night. >> we have to hand clean all of this with our own money, our own water and all of that stuff. >> it is frustrating. >> reporter: he and neighbors live near a creek that they say overflows its banks even in mild storms, they never get help from city crews because it is in an unincorporated part of the area. >> despite a workday you have to stay up and move. we were up until 4:00 a.m. moving cars, it is ankle deep. >> residents say earlier today the water reached all of the way up to the fence line >> it happens so fast. it is like no warning. there was no water on the ground from what i understood and 20 minutes all of the water was on the ground. >> my friend was surprised it flooded but to me it is no surprise >> that truck would have water close to the doors, the fence, barely seeing the top of it. you are looking at up to your waist. >> reporter: it flooded but did not reach the rooms in his

two top vote getters, regardless of party, will move on to the general election come november. tomorrow, voters in new hampshire will head to the polls for the first primary of the presidential elections. florida governor desantis now out of the race and throwing his support behind former president trump. nikki haley has an uphill battle ahead of her. both were out campaigning tonight. thousands of university workers made waves today when they walked off of the job. how the largest university faculty strike in history is ending faster than some expected. days of rain spelled the end for more trees that came crashing down in a really unfortunate spot. why this was especially bad news for one peninsula driver >> this was the back window. the tree fell this way. >> and the stanley cup usually means something to hockey fans. now it is all the rage for shoppers. one north cal woman

. thousands of california state university workers that went out on strike today will be going back to work tomorrow. in the past hour the two sides announced they reached a tentative agreement. nearly 30,000 faculty workers were asking for better pay and benefits and they were supposed to strike all week. the union still has to ratify this agreement but teachers and students are set to go back to

class tomorrow. a safeway in san francisco's fillmore neighborhood slated to close in march will stay open for now. community members fought the closure in part because it was the only major grocery store in the area. that closure was announced after the company sold the lot to a developer. today, mayor breed said the city struck a deal to keep the store open through early 2025. back to all of the rain that we have seen that left plenty of flood damage along the coast like in santa cruz. an apartment complex flooded overnight. the water was up to the wheels of some of the parked cars. heavy rain caused a creek behind this complex to flood. sending the water rushing in. and, in san mateo the storm brought down multiple large trees like this one that fell on parked cars at an apartment complex right there. it went through the sun roof. thankfully nobody got hurt. it was horrible news for the

car's owner. >> it was depressing, shocked, sad, it was my first car that i ever bought for myself >> it was less than a week ago when this happened, that massive eucalyptus tree that crashed into several parked cars in san francisco near golden gate park. one of the many hazards that happen when we get a lot of rain in a short period of time and some of the trees are old. paul, i know we have more rain in the forecast, right? >> right, i don't think it will be as impactful. we were concerned about all of those threats, potential for mudslides, localized flooding and tree damage. now it is moving out. we get a brief dry break the rest of tonight, tomorrow, most of tomorrow night before the next storm system moves in. during the dry break we are seeing the fog spreading out and the clouds dropping closer to ground level. swallowing the tops in downtown. temperatures in the middle 50s. the fog will spread out, the temperatures will not change a lot as the fog continues to just spread out

across more of the bay area it will insulate the ground and keep the temperatures from dropping too far into the 40s. mix of 40s and 50s by tomorrow morning, it will not see the fog lasting too long even at the thickest, it will be gone at 10:00, 11:00, noon at the latest. a mix of sunshine and clouds for the rest of the day. wake up tomorrows for tomorrow morning, mix of upper 40s, 50s sprinkled in. above average for january, high temperatures tomorrow will be a little bit above average as well. only 2-3 degrees, it counts, temperatures reaching up into the lower 60s. 63 degrees in san jose, the warm spot on the map tomorrow afternoon, most of us in the lower 60s. the exception, half-moon bay, upper 50s, upper 50s for san francisco, just barely below 60 degrees and the temperatures for the north bay should be between 60, 63, tied for one of the warmest spots, napa, 63 degrees. now, we will be tracking the next wave of rain

heading our way. let's take a look at future cast. we will pick it up with where we left off at noon tomorrow. mix of clouds and sunshine. the rain does not move in until late on tuesday night. after midnight. really, closer to sunrise on wednesday morning. wednesday morning's commute it could be challenging, wet roads, the heaviest rain will not last nearly as long as it did yesterday evening and last night. pushes out of the bay area quickly and then into lingering off and on showers by wednesday afternoon and evening. even those will quiet down as we head through wednesday night. rainfall amounts will be modest. especially compared to what we had over the past 24 hours, 1/10th of an inch, a quarter of an inch, some spots, quarter of an inch to half an inch. this is the aggressive forecast models, keeping us above half an inch. not a huge snow maker. talking 2-4 inches of rain. snow level, 6500 feet. drop it down to about 5500 feet or 5,000 feet it is more of a

rain/snow mix. these amounts modest considering what is possible this time of the year. once the rain chance on wednesday moves out, the rain chances for the rest of the seven-day forecast are low. not 0, there is an outside chance, friday, friday night, saturday, a 10-20% chance is all we are looking a. middle of next week. that one looks like a heavier event. a long time to worry about that as we head,the next several days. let's look at the forecast, again, don't have to worry about the different microclimates, everyone will be within 5 degrees of each other. everyone has a good rain chance, rain chances on wednesday, a slight chance of friday, saturday, leaving the forecast dry for additional cloud cover. a of a the temperatures warming up pushing through the weekend and the last days of january. starting out next week. middle to upper 60s. some spots, flirting with 70 degrees next monday. >> oh, flirtation. 70 degrees,
