rivers and inundates homes in southern california. captioning funded by cbs well, good m well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. voters in new hampshire are heading to the polls today for the nation's first primary. the results could have a crucial impact on the gop race for the presidential nomination whittled down to two. former president trump and former u.n. ambassador nikki haley made their closing arguments to voters last night, and at the stroke of midnight, the tiny town of dixville notch kept up their tradition of casting the first ballots. cbs's penny kmitt joins us. good morning. >> good morning. primary day is here. in just a few hours polls across the state are going to start to open. remember, new hampshire does have an open primary system. what that means is that independent or undeclared voters are allowed to cast a ballot today. so that's really where nikki

haley is looking to make ground against former president donald trump. >> reporter: today all eyes are on voters in new hampshire as former president trump and nikki haley face off in what's now a two-person race for the republican presidential nomination. last night trump was joined on stage by former gop candidates now backing him as he tries to deliver a knockout blow to haley's campaign. >> we're going to bring our country back with your vote. >> reporter: haley is hoping to pull off an upset later today with the help of independent and undeclared voters. >> do you want more of the same? >> no! >> or do you want to go forward? >> reporter: the former u.n. ambassador has already grabbed an early win just after midnight grabbing all six of the available votes in the tiny town of dixville notch. new hampshire secretary of state is expecting a record turnout today with 22 gop delegates up for grabs.

course, on paramount plus. president biden and kamala harris are putting abortion front and center on their campaign. it will be the subject of their first joint campaign rally in virginia. cbs's nancy cordes reports. >> how dare he. >> reporter: the biden/harris campaign kicked into high gear going after donald trump on the issue of abortion in op-eds and ads around the country. >> in texas you are forced to carry that pregnancy. >> reporter: the goal, to tie the recent rollback in reproductive rights directly to the gop front-runner. >> we did the roe v. wade thing, which we've been trying to get it done. >> reporter: since roe v. wade was overturned 19 months ago, 21 states have established full or partial abortion bans. the issue has galvanized voters on the left who have turned out to protect abortion rights in seven states so far. come this november, the issue will be on the ballot in up to nine more states including battlegrounds like arizona and nevada.

white house. well, dangerous weather continues to impact parts of the country including flash flooding in southern california. 3 inches of rain fell near san diego yesterday in a three-hour period. vehicles were swept away, homes were inundated. people and pets had to be rescued. and a major freeway was shut down leaving hundreds of cars stranded. in the midwest, snow, freezing rain, and ice storms created a mess and caused havoc on the roads. outside st. louis a fire truck was unable to stop and slid along an icy street. the coast guard says 20 people were rescued by air and by boat on a floating sheet of ice on lake erie. they got stramted yesterday on a half mile-long ice floe near ohio. severe weather is expected to continue this week with heavy showers, thunderstorms before a thaw-out. and now to the israel/hamas war. breaking overnight, a big loss for israel's military. the idf says 21 soldiers were killed in gaza in one of the

deadliest single attacks since the three-month war. israeli media says the soldiers were preparing explosives to demolish two buildings when a militant fired a rocket-propelled grenade at a tank. it triggered explosions causing the buildings to collapse on the soldiers inside. israel has proposed a two-month cease-fire that calls for the release of all hostages and leaders of hamas would be allowed to relocate to other countries. hamas rejected the proposal and officials in egypt and qatar are working to bridge the differences. and this news comes as families of hostages increase the pressure on israeli lawmakers. yesterday a group stormed into a meeting at israel's parliament to demand they do more to secure their loved ones' release. cbs's charlie d'agata reports from the region on the u.s.'s eighth strike -- rather eighth attack on houthi targets in yemen.

>> reporter: the joint u.s./uk strike hit eight houthi targets in attacks smaller in scope compared to allied launched jets from the same eisenhower aircraft carrier in cyprus, striking more than 60. in that ongoing u.s. led fight against houthi militants, u.s. military officials say the search for two missing navy s.e.a.l.s has ended, declaring them deceased. 37-year-old christopher james chambers from maryland and 27-year-old nathan gage ingram from texas were on a nighttime raid of this boat, confiscating weapons bound for the rebels in yemen when one of them was swept overboard. following protocol, the other jumped to attempt a rescue. this new video is said to show one of those houthi missiles hitting a greek cargo ship last week. the houthis say they're attacking red sea targets in support of palestinians in gaza where the war rages on. cbs news producer marwan al

locations in the joliet area sunday and monday while police say nance took his own life last night after a standoff at a gas station in texas. investigators say he knew the victims, but they do not know a motive for the killings. the "atlanta journal-constitution" says a georgia judge unsealed court records in a divorce case involving the special prosecutor in the state's election interference case against donald trump and others. an attorney representing one of the defendants in the case accuses prosecutor nathan wade having an affair with fulton county d.a. fani willis who hired him. the unsealed documents do not include any references to the alleged affair. the judge also delayed a decision on weather willis will have to be deposed in the divorce case. and the "associated press" says a harvard university investigation into alleged plagiarism by former president
