and "barbie" snubbed. growing outrage after oscar passes over the two most prominent women involved in the blockbuster hit. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the race for the white house. former president donald trump added to his iowa victory picking up yet another win in the nation's first primary in new hampshire. trump getting 54.6% of the vote to nikki haley's 43.2%. and she is vowing to press on. republican voters told cbs news the economy and immigration were their top two issues. cbs' penny kmitt joins us from manchester with the details. penny, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. despite nikki haley's loss to former president donald trump she is determined to stay in the race. meanwhile, donald trump is furious by her decision and says that she can expect significant

pain as long as she continues her campaign. former president donald trump scored his second 2024 victory last night after his projected win in the new hampshire republican primary. >> this is a fantastic state. [ cheers ] this is a great, great state. >> reporter: while addressing supporters, trump made false election claims and threw more attacks at rival nikki haley. >> she had a very bad night. [ chants ] >> reporter: despite her projected second-place finish in new hampshire, haley is vowing to stay in the race. >> new hampshire is first in the nation, it is not the last in the nation. [ cheers ] this race is far from over. there are dozens of states left to go. >> reporter: cbs news exit polls show that trump's voters believe they're more conservative than haley voters, and a big majority on both sides say they would be pretty dissatisfied if the other gop candidate won the nomination.

>> i voted for trump. he was great for the economy. >> i voted for nikki haley. i'm afraid trump is just too much chaos. >> reporter: president biden releasing a statement on the primary results saying, "it is now clear that donald trump will be the republican nominee." and adding, quote, the stakes could not be higher. the president picked up a win from new hampshire democrats despite not even appearing on the ballot thanks to a grassroots write-in campaign. and president biden really does appear to be already shutting out nikki haley. his campaign is even selling t-shirts that read "together we will defeat trump again." anne-marie? >> penny kmitt in manchester. thank you so much. president biden is bolstering his re-election campaign staff. he's moving his deputy white house chief of staff and senior adviser to campaign headquarters in delaware. mr. biden took some heat at a campaign rally in virginia yesterday during an event on abortion rights.

he was interrupted more than a dozen times by antiwar protesters blasting his handling of the israel-hamas war. today mr. biden will be the keynote speaker at the united auto workers convention in washington. overseas now to the war in gaza where hamas has rejected israel's latest offer of a cease-fire. the plan called for a two-month pause in fighting, the freeing of hostages in exchange for israel releasing jailed palestinians, and letting top hamas leaders move out of gaza. hamas this morning releasing new video it says shows that attack that killed 21 israeli soldiers. the deadliest single attack in israel -- on israeli forces since the war began. and the u.s. says american forces carried out strikes in yemen yesterday, destroying two houthi missiles prepared to attack cargo ships in the red sea. cbs' jarred hill is joining us now in here in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. u.s. central command said the

houthi missiles posed imminent threat to u.s. naval as well as civilian merchant vessels. remember, this has impacted the cost of shipping around the world. all of this comes after the u.s. and uk hit other houthi targets in yemen on monday. american-supported strikes hit three facilities used by iranian-backed houthi militias in iraq according to u.s. central command, targeting headquarters, storage facilities, and training locations, all in response to repeated houthi attacks in the region, including on a u.s. airbase in iraq injuring four american service members, and on shipping commerce in the red sea. >> all with the goal of further degrading the houthis' ability to conduct further attacks on ships in the red sea. >> reporter: escalation in the region comes as israeli military troops surrounded gaza's second largest city, khan younis. and as the idf suffered its most deadly day since the war with hamas began. 24 soldiers killed, 21 in a

single attack on a building a spokesman said they were preparing to detonate. as the war's death toll climbs including to more than 25,000 in gaza, antiwar protesters interrupted president biden's speech tuesday in virginia. the u.n. secretary general also renewing his call for a humanitarian cease-fire. >> this should ensure sufficient aid gets to where it is needed, facilitate the release of hostages and calm tensions in the middle east. >> reporter: in florida, a moment of hope among the devastation. a heartwarming reunion as five children stuck for months in gaza after a trip to see family made it home to their mom. >> i can't believe i wouldn't see them again. it's hard. but finally i saw my kids. >> reporter: a long road to get this family settled again as unrest in the region continues. and i want to go back to the rejected cease-fire proposal. reports are saying that hamas is insisting that no more hostages will be released until israel ends its offensive and pulls out

of gaza. prime minister benjamin netanyahu has vowed to go ahead until, quote, absolute victory. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. now to the powerful storms moving across the country. millions of people under flood and winter weather alerts. in lufkin, texas, drivers were seen trying to get through flooded water, and the wet roads caused a number of accidents across the eastern part of the state. now all that heavy rain is very slowly shifting eastward toward the deep south. a significant flooding threat will develop from houston all the way to nashville today and push into georgia tomorrow. parts of louisiana and mississippi could get doused with more than six inches of rain over the next couple of days. meanwhile, the folks in southern california are trying to clean up from the destruction left behind. cbs' jonathan vigliotti reports from san diego. >> reporter: storm-battered san diego is cleaning up a massive mess. >> this event that happened yesterday was unprecedented. more than anything we've ever seen.

>> reporter: the city known for its sandy beaches now covered in muck and debris after yesterday's record rainfall plunged neighborhoods into chaos. how fast is it rising at this point? >> it's going really fast. >> reporter: maritza ramirez and her family raced to the attic but the water kept coming. >> my fear was drowning in the attic. >> reporter: they climbed onto the roof. they waited hours to be rescued. >> i was like, what are we going to do? the water's dirty, the water's deep. weep felt helpless. we were barefoot, cold, stuck on the roof. >> reporter: emergency responders struggled as they went door to door rescuing more than 100 trapped residents using kayaks and stretchers. >> you can see the water line -- >> reporter: jessica calis was not home when chest-deep water destroyed nearly everything inside. when you walked in for the first time and saw this, what looks like the inside of a washing machine, what went on in your head? >> i mean, absolute like shock and disbelief. i've never seen anything like this. >> reporter: and cars like this show the power of this storm. tonight a long road to recovery ahead.

earlier this month a door panel on an alaska airlines boeing plane blew off shortly after takeoff. a man was found guilty in the so-called wrong driveway shooting, and new details in a deadly illinois rampage. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "chicago tribune" says police described a reign of terror when a mass shooting suspect killed eight people including two teenage girls and multiple other relatives. [ gunfire ] >> surveillance video captured the sounds of gunshots when a man carrying groceries was shot and injured outside a home in chicago in the suburb of joliet sunday. authorities say romeo nance also killed seven relatives and another man at a different location the same day. nance took his own life monday after a confrontation with law enforcement in texas. investigators say they are still searching for a motive. "the new york times" reports

a new york man was found guilty of shooting and killing a woman when the vehicle that she was riding in mistakenly drove onto his rural driveway. after deliberating for less than an hour, a jury found kevin monahan guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old caylin gillis. she was in an suv with friends when the vehicle pulled onto his driveway by mistake. monahan faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced in march. and the "detroit free press" reports on the trial of a mother whose son killed four students at a michigan high school. jury selections began yesterday in the involuntary manslaughter trial of jennifer crumbley. her son ethan opened fire at oxford high school in 2021. prosecutors say the boy's parents were grossly negligent by making a gun accessible and ignoring his mental health needs. ethan crumbley is serving a life sentence. it's the first time in the u.s. that parents have been charged in a mass school shooting. still to come, trader joe's
