of iranian-backed militants spreading fear of a widening war in the region. the vow from president biden. border battle. senators appear close to a bipartisan deal aimed at curbing illegal migrant crossings and expediting the asylum process. super bowl bound. the stage is set. the san francisco 49ers going up against the defending champs, the kansas city chiefs. a rematch of the 2020 super bowl. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president biden promising to respond after a drone strike that killed three american troops. these are the first u.s. casualties since the start of the israel-hamas war and set off scores of attacks on american military locations in iraq and syria. it happened at a remote base in jordan near the iraq and syria borders where about 350 army and air force personnel are deployed.

cbs' naomi ruchim is joining us now here with the very latest on this. >> such a tragic way to start the week, especially for american troops both at home and abroad. in addition to those three service members who lost their lives, at least 34 were also injured. several of them had to be evacuated, some in critical condition, but all are said to be stable this morning. the attack now revealing the palpable toll this war is having on americans. in what could be a tipping point to a full-scale international conflict, three american service members were killed in an attack at a military base in northeast jordan. in a statement, president biden blamed the attack on radical iran-backed militant groups operating in syria and iraq. at a campaign event in south carolina sunday, the president honored those killed. >> we lost three brave souls in an attack on one of our bases. we shall respond. >> reporter: more than 30

service members were also injured at an attack at an outpost known as tower 22 which provides support to u.s. special forces operating inside syria. a drone strike hit the troops' sleeping quarters in the predawn hours. gop presidential hopeful nikki haley was swift to weigh in. >> the fact that we lost three, and dozens were wounded, after 160 attacks on our men and women in the military, it is absolutely shameful. >> reporter: former president donald trump posted a statement saying, "this brazen attack on the united states is yet another horrific and tragic consequence of joe biden's weakness and surrender." many analysts consider the attack a red line in the conflict between israel and hamas after prior hits from houthi rebels on shipping vessels in the red sea. >> certainly americans are both feeling materially the effects

of this conflict as well as feeling emotionally the effects of this conflict. >> reporter: president biden has vowed a response to the attack at a time and in a manner of our choosing. the strike is believed to be the deadliest attack on u.s. service members since 13 americans were killed in a suicide bombing in kabul as the u.s. pulled out of afghanistan in 2021. the military has not yet identified the soldiers killed in this attack while they deliver this tragic news to their families. anne-marie? >> really unfortunate. thank you very much. "cbs mornings" will have much more on this attack and reaction from admiral john kirby, the national security council's coordinator for strategic communications. that's going to happen at around 7:00. so as for the talks on another deal for a hostage release, it looks like progress is being made. cia director william burns took part in the negotiations with officials in egypt and qatar -- in paris, rather, yesterday. israel says significant gaps

remain, but after the talks -- called the talks constructive. the deal being worked out would include a two-month cease-fire in exchange for the release of more than 100 hostages. the u.n. secretary general, antonio guterres, is urging governments to -- not to suspend their support for the u.n.'s palestinian relief agency in gaza. at least nine countries including the u.s. have paused funding to unra following allegations dozens of u.n. staffers were involved in the october 7th massacre. the secretary general says of the 12 employees accused nine were immediately fired, one was confirmed dead, and two were still being identified. unra says the funding is a lifeline for gaza's 2.3 million people who depend on it for food and shelter. as the president confronts a steep rise in violence throughout the middle east, the administration is facing a battle in congress over the immigration crisis at the southern border. there may be progress on that front. cbs' skyler henry has the story

from washington. if that bill were a law today i'd shut down the border now and fix it quickly. >> reporter: the says he will close the u.s.-mexico border if it becomes overwhelmed if congress approves the bipartisan proposal under negotiation in the senate. lawmakers are finalizing the language of the plan. >> it's been the simple request of americans whether your republican, democrat, or independent. people want a secure border. >> reporter: immigration reporter camilo montoya-galvez is at the border in eagle pass, texas. >> reporter: this would be a seismic shift in policy here at the u.s.-mexico border. the president would be allowed to suspend asylum processing when illegal crossings spike, authorizing border agents here to quickly return migrants back to mexico across the rio grande. >> reporter: the terms also would raise the standard to accept asylum seekers and shorten the legal review process to six months. while the immigration challenge

"cbs philadelphia" reports u.s. marshals captured an escaped inmate after five days on the run. shane pryor was taken into custody. the 17-year-olded from a philadelphia hospital last wednesday. video released saturday showed pryor at a corner store in west philadelphia. pryor is being charged as an adult in a 2020 homicide. "greenville news" reports alex murdaugh's jury tampering hearing, the south carolina attorney who was convicted of killing his wife and son in 2021 has -- has motioned for a new trial and accused a court clerk of talking to -- talking the jury into a guilty verdict in order to sell her book. former jurors will tell the judge what happened during deliberations. if the judge decides there was jury tampering, prosecutors will have to try murdaugh again. and "usa today" reports a woman was trapped 15 hours overnight in a gondola at lake tahoe's heavenly ski resort.
