with elizabeth cook. a deadly small plane crash in the middle of a busy east bay intersection. why authorities say it could have been a lot worse. the bay area gearing up for a major storm. when the heavy rain and wind will arrive and how long it will stick around. new details about the look of super bowl lviii. it could be a lucky draw for the niners. thank you for joining us this afternoon. we are your home for super bowl lviii. the niners taking on the chiefs. we will have full coverage including reports from vegas in a few minutes. starting with a small plane crash today in contra costa county, the pilot died. it was a single engine plane and it went down at 10:30 this morning in a busy intersection near buchanan field airport. this is on concord avenue and diamond boulevard. the pilot was the only person on the plane. it crashed shortly after takeoff.

>> i have heard conflicting reports that it was doing touch and goes or had taken off several times already. this time it had just taken off and it took what was reported to us as an abrupt nosedive. >> here is video of the crash scene from one of our viewers. nobody on the ground was hurt. the ntsb now taking over the investigation. the third suspect in the killing of oakland security guard kevin nishita is on his way back to the bay area. nishita was shot in 2021 while working as a private security guard for a local tv news station. police believe he was the getaway driver. laron gilbert was arrested earlier this month in missouri and is now arriving at the jail in dublin. >> as far as we need to go, whether it is new york, missouri, san leandro, cases go as long as the suspect is out there. >> all three suspects are being charged with murder. the case is now in the hands of the

alameda county da. b.a.r.t. civic center station in san francisco has a reputation for being sketchy but the transit agency says it is cleaning up that act. is having a new passenger experience survey that shows 77% of riders are satisfied with the overall experience at the civic center station. that is a 9% increase from the previous order. in the east bay, teachers in dublin hitting the picket lines outside of some schools. this was the scene at dublin high school. teachers held signs and handed out papers to parents. 99% of teachers voted to authorize a strike and the union says the district's.an 8% increase in the state funding and teachers deserve more of that money too. we reached out to the school district for a response but have not heard back. first alert weather now. we are gearing up for another

major storm. heavy rain and wind on the bay area with the potential for significant damage. meteorologist darren peck is tracking it all for us. >> we will start with the rain but the wind is quickly becoming a bigger side to the story. there is a lot to discuss from a wind standpoint as we track this system. let's start off with the rain because that is what the majority of us will notice. we are still watching the leading edge of the rain getting here in the morning. if anything, the timing has slowed down a little. you might avoid the worst of this for the morning commute . once we have gotten toward the early afternoon, you can see a big widespread band of rain moving through and we will come back to this timeframe. it is still right where it was yesterday. and some of the most impressive rain comes through, as we get into thursday, we will be done with a few scattered showers. thursday is more isolated with occasional thunderstorms, hit and miss showers. let's come

back for a moment. we can see this very well organized brightly lit band coming right through the heart of the bay. that is when the cold front is coming through. that is when we will notice the main impacts from the heaviest rain to the strongest wind. as we take that and watch it work its way across the bay, that takes us through the second half of the day on wednesday night into thursday morning. they don't clear out entirely on thursday. there is still a chance for isolated downpours from brief thunderstorms but the majority of the rain we are looking at is falling throughout wednesday, mainly through the second half and the totals are still pretty good. let's check out from the city and the peninsula south, east bay and tri-valley. there is a flood watch because of this bay area wide. ponding of water on roads, some low-lying intersections filling with water. the concern is still

there. we are watching for some streams and creeks to rise. here is the latest update. we are looking at a forecast for the russian river and there is good news on that. forecast is a little lower than it was yesterday. what matters here is the blackline. that is what we call the deterministic forecast. you can see where the flood stage is . we barely get there and that is going into thursday at midnight. the blue shows you what the range of possibility is. at least we were able to bring my black line just down below monitor stage. here is what is a bigger impact from this storm, wind. when we visualize the wind field, you can see the deeper bands of purple. the stronger wind gusts get here at the same time we are looking at heavier bands of rain. let's bring it back to the day and watch that line approach as we go through

wednesday morning and then wednesday afternoon. strongest winds coming in across the santa cruz mountains. if we go to that same timeframe and zoom in, we are looking at 50 miles per hour gusts off the coast here and that is taking us through the afternoon and evening. you will see that the strongest winds will pass by the time we get into early thursday but that high wind warning goes until 4:00 in the morning on thursday. it starts at 4:00 in the morning tomorrow in the focus for the worst of the wind will be in the santa cruz mountains. this is the only place in the bay that has a high wind warning. everyone else has a wind advisory. there might be some debris on roadways but a high wind warning is like to degrees of importance above that for the santa cruz mountains. this is the wording from the national weather service. there are going to be downed trees, they were going to be widespread power outages in the santa cruz mountains. that has quickly become the focus. there is

the first choice of which uniform to wear. they posted video today showing their red jerseys with the super bowl patch. the chiefs have worn red in three of their prior four superbowls. that leaves the niners wearing their white jerseys. over the past 19 years, the team wearing the white has gone 16-3. one of those three losses was by the niners in super bowl liv against the chiefs. if the chiefs go with their white pants, super bowl lviii will look much the same in terms of the uniforms. of course, the niners are hoping for a win in this revenge match-up. a lot of the 49er faithful are marveling over sunday's huge come from behind win against the lions including this amazing catch by brandon i uke. even his teammates were in disbelief. this is the volkswagen red and gold report. >> the 49ers will get a super bowl rematch with the kansas city chiefs but this time, they have a few more weapons on offense like brock purdy and brandon aiyuk . now, purdy and

>> even before the 49ers secured their ticket to the super bowl in vegas, the faithful made their way to sin city. we spent time with one fan who found a pretty refreshing spot to enjoy the game. troop the energy at the stadium in las vegas, electric. we met some megawatt california energy in the form of arianne roland. >> it is so crowded out here. >> you are repping the 49ers. >> reporter: getting to las vegas is no easy feat due to airline delays but this one estate faithful. >> i waited at the airport for nine hours to get here. >> it was that important to you? >> i got to see my niners. >> she saw her niners the same way super bowl fans who don't have a ticket to the big game

from the game itself to the adds to the merchandise, we know football is big business. ahead of super bowl lviii, an up-and-coming designer and 49er wife just got a huge deal. the nfl confirmed to forbes that

kristin received a license to use nfl logos and her clothing designs. still no exact details on that deal but brandon aiyuk has demond -- or social media presence got a huge spike after swift was seen wearing her custom travis kelce jacket. that one was really cool. across the bay area, bars may get a boost from the super bowl. this pub in cole valley has a history with the 49ers since it is located right across the street from the team's first home. we spoke to the owner and employees about all of the enthusiasm and they say business has boomed 40% for the big niners game. >> people tend to close off their sections. i'd say we make double the money we would on another sunday. >> people tend to get excited and spend more money and buy

drinks for their friends and buy lots of food. it has been very good. >> since super bowl tickets are so expensive, a lot of fans will be hitting their local bars instead next sunday. a peninsula restaurant is expecting a packed house on super bowl sunday. it got its start back in its 70s when the niners were not doing so great. we look back at the owner's offer to the team that has been paying off decades now. >> he was at this gas station when tim harrison noticed an abandon 7-eleven across the street and thought it would make a good location for a restaurant. it was 1972. >> all of those booths over there were deli cases. it was empty, full of slurpee cups. >> he was serving up hamburgers that his customers loved but harrison love was reserved for the 49ers. he remembers watching his heroes playing at

kezar but the team never had a whole lot of success. in 1981, he offered to host a rally for the team in his parking lot to stir up some local spirit. he says, you know what? the only way you will get these guys appear is if you give something away. >> he made the team an offer. a free meal for anyone in the organization, including office staff on weeks when the team won. >> what do they have to lose? that was the year they went to the super bowl. they went 16-3 and the rest is history. >> talk about timing but it worked. players and coaches began frequenting the place. harrison still has the free meal card issued. the restaurant has a burger named after him. >> how much did it cost you to feed these guys for free? >> turned out to be a lot. never really stopped to added up. $10,000? those are old 1981

prices. >> he got much more in return for what it cost him. the bar flourished with fans and he became close to many on the team. displayed on the wall is a personal invitation from the family to attend bill walsh's funeral service. he became friends with many of the players who were part of the glory days of those first championships. >> it has been a great ride. here we are, 42 years later, hoping for another one. it is never fun to lose but a diehard fan kept his word. we are there razz a couple of friends settle a playoff that, begrudgingly, of course, in las vegas.

>> a cbs news analysis found in the last three years, the share of unvaccinated kindergartners nationwide grew significantly. that can lead to measles outbreaks like new york city's in 2019. >> routine childhood immunizations, every single one is down. not significantly but i am worried about the trend if it continues in that direction. >> it is personal for the health commissioner. >> i don't want to live in a world like the places i used to work or like my parents grew up in in india were vaccine preventable diseases are the norm, where you don't know whether your child will live until one or two. this is life and death. >> five years ago, vaccination rates were low in the state of maine but turned around after the law there changed. it started with religious leaders who united. >> for us, it did not seem radical at all to say, in this instance, the way we love our neighbors to get vaccinated.
