good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it is only a matter of time before the u.s. strikes back against the deadly drone attack in jordan. president biden says that he's already made up his mind on how to respond. the u.s. is also beefing up air defenses at the outposts. cbs' jarred hill is joining us here in new york with the latest on all of this. >> good morning. we're learning more about the lack of security and defense % capabilities at that outpost prior to the attack, as well as some of the changes being made now as president biden prepares to respond. president biden says he's made up his mind on how to retaliate after a drone attack killed three american soldiers in jordan on sunday. [ inaudible ] >> yes. >> mr. president? >> have you made a decision --

>> responsible for the death of americans -- >> i do hold them responsible in the sense that they're supplying the weapons to the people who did it. >> reporter: the u.s. is rushing additional air defenses in the base in jordan known as tower 22. sunday's strike was the first time the outpost had been attacked. u.s. officials acknowledged it was not as well protected as other u.s. bases in syria and iraq. >> we're going to work hard with our allies and partners in the region to prevent a broader conflict. militia that the u.s. blames for the attack says it's suspending military operations against u.s. forces. the pentagon, though, says there have been at least three other attacks on u.s. troops in the region since the jordan strike. the white house says president biden spoke with the families of the three reservists from fort moore, georgia, killed in the strike including the parents of 24-year-old kennedy sanders. >> he made it very personal. and i really felt that he had a sense of compassion for us as a family. >> reporter: the president is expected to be there when the

body of the three soldiers arrive at dover air base on friday. >> do we know how the u.s. is planning to respond? >> we know a bit more about this. according to u.s. officials telling cbs news that this will likely include a strategic bombing campaign that could last over the course of numerous targets for numerous days. again, all of this with the intension of not escalating a conflict, not creating a war with iran in the midst of all this. >> that is always top of mind. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> sure. a new hostage release deal appears to be in doubt after prime minister benjamin netanyahu rejected two of hamas' demand. -- demands. netanyahu ruled out a full military withdrawal from gaza and the release of thousands of jailed militants. hamas' top political leader said the group was studying the terms of the deal. in the west bank, a dramatic raid. israeli forces disguised as civilian women in medical workers stormed a hospital killing three palestinian

militants. israel said the three were using the hospital as a hideout and one was planning an imminent attack. hamas confirmed they were members. israel said it started pumping water into hamas' vast tunnel network to destroy the infrastructure. the strategy the u.n. has warned could damage gaza's drinking water and sewage systems. and now to the breaking news out of washington. a house committee voted to advance articles of impeachment against homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas for his handling of the situation at the southern border. the party-line vote came after a marathon hearing that lasted until after midnight and further complicates plans in the senate for sweeping new border security laws. cbs' skyler henry has the story from capitol hill. on that vote, chairman green, it was -- >> reporter: the house committee on border security sent the

matter to the full house. >> failure to secure the border has been so significant, so catastrophic, so egregious that congress must now use its power to provide accountability. >> reporter: for house republicans, accountability means an effort to impeach homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas over his handling of the southern border. >> the actions and decisions of secretary mayorkas have left us with no other option than to proceed with articles of impeachment. >> reporter: in two articles of impeachment, gop lawmakers charged mayorkas with willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law and allege the secretary obstructed congressional oversight and failed to rein in migrant crossings. democrats accuse the gop-led panel of having no evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. >> the sham impeachment of secretary mayorkas is a baseless political stunt. >> reporter: the gop effort follows unprecedented border crossing levels that topped as many as 10,000 last month. >> done all i can do.

>> reporter: president biden said there's nothing more he can do through executive authority and implored congress to pass a border security deal. in a letter to the committee, motor vehicles defended the biden administration policies, noting it has removed, returned, or expelled more migrants in three years than the trump administration. a new york state judge could rule as early as today on a $370 million civil fraud case against former president donald trump. the judge has already found that trump committed fraud repeatedly in overvaluing his real estates to obtain loans and insurance at more favorable rates. the judge is now set to rule on the fraud damages which represent the biggest financial threat to trump in his real estate empire. 30% million people in california are -- 30 million people in california are at risk of flooding as a big storm moves on shore. an atmospheric river feeding storm systems across the pacific will bring heavy rain and snow. it starts this morning in san francisco where it will last all

carrying 16 tourists and three crew members when it began to take on water late monday. all were mexican citizens. the survivors were rescued by the mexican navy and local officials. a stolen jackie robinson statue is found, and a potential school shooting was averted. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san diego union tribune" reports a student and his father were arrested after the student was accused of making threats of a school shooting. the teen who has not been identified because he's under age was arrested last friday after allegedly threatening an attack at rancho bernardo high school. police searched the teenager's home and found ghost guns, assault weapons, and several destructive devices. his father, neal anders, was arrested earlier yesterday on suspicions of several weapons charges. the "detroit free press"" says jennifer crumbley's trial is turning up the heat on school officials. this as video played in court yesterday showing the mothers of shooter ethan crumbley in the

back of a police car as detectives searched her house. >> my son has ruined his life -- i'll probably never see him again. >> the former dean of students testified yesterday ethan's parents said it was okay for their son to return to class after he was pulled for a violent picture he drew, and said he didn't search his backpack because he didn't have suspicion to. later that day the teenager shot and killed four students. authorities testified they northbound an open gun box and gun range targets with bullet holes taped to the shooter's bedroom wall. jennifer crumbley has pleaded not guilty for her alleged role in the 2021 shooting. "the wichita eagle" reports a stolen jackie robinson statue was found burned and in pieces. first responders reported to a trash can fire at garvey park shortly after 8:30 yesterday morning and found pieces of the bronze statue. it belonged to a youth baseball league. it had gone missing last thursday and prompted a citywide search. no suspects have been arrested,

barbie is getting into the super bowl spirit, and elon musk loses his $55 billion pay package. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks closed mixed on tuesday as big tech earnings began pouring in. the dow gained 133 points. the nasdaq fell by 118, and the s&p 500 lost almost 3 points. five years following a shareholder lawsuit against tesla ceo elon musk a delaware judge has ruled musk cannot keep a $55 billion pay package. the lawsuit accused musk and tesla's board of directors of breaching their duties to the car company and wasting corporate assets. musk denied being part of settling that $55 billion payout, but the judge said his team failed to prove the compensation was fair. following the ruling, musk took to x saying, quote, never incorporate your company in the state of delaware. the fda is warning everyone to avoid neptune's fixed products.

rivera, who was 91, died in new york after a brief illness. she had more than seven decades of credits on broadway dating back to the 1950s. rivera starred in shows like "west side story" and "kiss of the spider woman." in one of her last interviews, she spoke about her perseverance last year for "cbs sunday morning." >> i do believe that being a dancer gave me the ability to fight and to withstand and to cope. if i come back, i want to come back a dancer. that will be my second life. >> during her career rivera received many accolade including a kennedy center honor. the three actresses who followed in chita rivera's footprints by playing maria in "west side story" are paying their respects. rita moreno issued a statement saying, "chita rivera is eternal.
