their platforms. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. what will congress do to regulate big tech? that is the question this morning after lawmakers grilled the ceos of five social media companies on capitol hill. the bipartisan group and families taking the companies to task over failures to protect teens and children who use their platforms. cbs' jarred hill is joining us in new york. there were a few ceos that have never been before congress before. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, and there were a couple who have made this trip a number of times. this online safety hearing was one of the rare moments where everyone in the senate committee across party lines seemed to be on the same page, holding the ceos' feat to the fire. it's like this every time there's a hearing like this. many are wondering what's next. >> do you have blood your hands? >> reporter: tough questions on capitol hill for the ceos of meta, snap, tiktok, x, and discord.

the heads of the five social media giants also came face to face with parents who say their children were harmed, some of them died as a result of online exploitation, harassment, and bullying on their sites. >> would you like to apologize for what you've done to these good people? >> reporter: snapchat's ceo apologizing during questions related to children who died after allegedly buying drugs through the app. >> i'm so sorry that we have not been able to prevent the tragedies. >> reporter: this woman's granddaughter fell into a crisis after she was sexually exploited on snapchat. >> they need to be accountable, they need to do more instead of doing less. >> reporter: the ceos of snap and x expressed support for one of several bills proposed, others vow to work toward a solution as members of the committee acknowledged congress also hasn't done enough. >> it's been 28 years since the internet, we haven't passed any

of these bills. >> reporter: committee members want to reform a 1996 law that shields tech companies from being sued by users. all right, again, congress does not have a good track record, really a track record at all for passing any meaningful legislation in this space. but the highest ranking members of the committee hope that whoever wins the white house in november will get behind some type of reform. opponents, though, argue the bills on the table would undermine privacy protections. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. now to california where much of the state is under alerts for flooding and high winds as the first of two storms fed by an atmospheric river moves in this morning. storm preps got under way yesterday in santa clara. fire crews cleared out trees that had fallen on a vehicle that took down power lines. an atmospheric river or pineapple express is expected to drop heavy rain across california. up to four inches of rain is possible along with damaging

winds. there are fears of flooding and mudslides. higher elevations could see four feet of snow. a second storm is forecast to hit sunday to monday. and the u.s. is blaming the islamic resistance in iraq, an umbrella group of iranian-backed militia, for sunday's drone attack in jordan that killed three american soldiers and wounded at least 40 others. the national security council says the u.s. believes the attack was planned, resourced, and facilitated by the group. as the u.s. prepares to retaliate, the administration officials say that will likely involve multiple bombing targets over the course of several days. >> we'll respond on our own time, on our own schedule. i would also caution you not to -- not to think that the first thing you see, you talked about publicly seeing, not the first thing you see won't be the last thing. >> kirby added the u.s. doesn't want a war with iran. iran is threatening to respond decisively to any u.s. attack. on tuesday president biden

offered condolences and spoke with the families of the three u.s. soldiers killed in the drone attack in jordan. it included the parents of 24-year-old kennedy sanders at their home in georgia where mr. biden delivered some bittersweet news. >> we're promoting her posthumously to sergeant. >> oh, wow. that is the best news i've heard today. thank you so much. you don't know how much that means to us. >> the white house says all three families will join mr. biden at the dignified transfer ceremony of the service members tomorrow at dover air force base in delaware. tensions continue to rise in the red sea where houthi militants have increasing their attacks. a senior defense official tells cbs news american fighter jets bombed ten unmanned drones in western yemen yesterday that were preparing to launch. the "uss carne" shot down a ballistic missile and several drones fired toward the gulf of aidan. we learned a houthi missile came within a mile of the "uss

gravely" on tuesday, forcing sailors to use their final line of defense. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu told the families of hostages that efforts were under way to bring their loved ones home. he did not go into detail, though, about the talks under way for a new hostage release agreement. and there's growing concern along israel's northern border with lebanon where hezbollah militants have been launching nearly daily attacks on israeli targets. debora patta traveled to a border town. >> reporter: israel is not at war with lebanon, but every day explosions echo along this border. israeli troops trading fire with hezbollah fighters. >> every minute they can track you. every minute they can track me, shot you, shot everybody. >> reporter: yoni yaakobi is one of the last remaining residents in the farming village of margaliot. 450 people once lived here, now

they are just 15. the community was evacuated on government orders. yaccobi is a farmer. he has chickens and fruit orchards, but he's part of a security team that stayed behind to protect the village a few hundred yards from the lebanese border. we can't stay here long, we're directly in the line of fire of hezbollah lookouts points. they could fire at any time. [ sirens ] and they do. this village was hit just monday. the iranian-backed hezbollah has amassed an arsenal of weapons, and now israel's defense minister has deployed more troops along that border in preparation, he says, for what comes next. are you worried that this could open up a new front in the war? >> not that i worry, i know that we have a problem with the hezbollah. it's -- now we don't know when. >> reporter: you're saying it 's

only a matter of time when something more serious could happen? they're on the terms of a hostage deal that are coming into view, offering a 45-day cease-fire in exchange for a staggered release of the more than 130 hostages. debora patta, tel aviv. a stark warning from fbi director christopher wray. the chinese hackers are targeting critical american infrastructure. wray told house lawmakers yesterday chinese government hackers are targeting u.s. treatment plants, the electrical grid, and transportation systems. he said beijing is getting ready to disrupt the daily lives of americans if the u.s. and china ever go to war. >> china's hackers are positioning on american infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real world harm to american citizens and communities if and when china decides the time has come to strike. >> u.s. officials also revealed they had disrupted a major

officials say that some of the victims were on elevated platforms when it came crashing down. five are in critical condition. no word on what caused the collapse, though. an apparent road-rage shooting in tampa and a gruesome murder case are r some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the philadelphia enquirer" says a man is facing a murder charge after decapitating his father and posting a gruesome video on youtube. justin mohy killed his father in their home and posted a video showing him holding up the severed head and spouting right-wing conspiracy theories. he was arrested hours later at a national guard facility about 10 miles away. "the tampa bay times" says police arrested the suspect in a road-rage shooting that interviewed a 4-year-old girl. authorities say james jackson was driving a car tuesday night in tampa when he got into a fight with several people in another car. they say jackson pulled alongside the car at a red light

i'm still timid. i ain't going to lie. >> that's the reaction from a florida sheriff deputy after a man said he found a pair of friendly bear cubs on a rural road. body cam video shows the bears approaching the two and checking out their vehicles. officials said the bears are kodiaks, native to alaska, and had escaped the home of a self-proclaimed bear trainer. another streamer cracking down on password sharing, and the fed keeps interest rates steady. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks fell wednesday after the federal reserve decided to hold interest rates steady in march. the dow lost 317 points. the nasdaq fell by 345, and the s&p 500 lost 79 points.

it wasn't the news wall street wanted to hear -- interest rate cuts are still months away. on wednesday, the central bank capped its key rate at about 5.4%, that is a 22-year high. federal reserve chair jerome powell said the country is close to taming inflation but won't lower rates until they're more confident the nation is nearing their 2% target. less than a year after launching, "the messenger" is shutting down. the news website pledged to shake up the media industry but is now one of the biggest busts in the online news world. the collapse impacted roughly 200 journalists, many of them taking to x to announce they're looking for work. hulu is cracking down on password sharing on the platform. the streaming service has changed its subscriber agreement to ban sharing of accounts outside individual households. the ban takes effect on march 14th and follows a similar
