rare tornado touchdown in the first alert forecast. there is still a lot of storm cleanup to do before the next round from flooded roads and vineyards to fallen trees causing headaches around the bay. >> i was out having coffee and i come home. all of a sudden there's no power in the house. and the 49ers back at work before they take football's biggest stage, how they're preparing for a super bowl showdown with the chiefs. >> the quarterback is as hard to beat as anyone who ever played the game. it doesn't get more dedicated than this, a 49ers fan scheduling his life saving treatments on the road to cheer on the 9ers, how the team's winning season has helped him through a tough year. >> 2023 has been real rough, but i'm still here. home of super bowl lviii between the 49ers and the chiefs, this is kpix cbs news
6:01 pm
bay area. but first another one-two punch, we're in between that atmospheric river of sorts, a chance today to clean up some damage from last night before the next big storm arrives sunday. there is still some wild weather today. check this out. it's a tornado caught on camera in rural sonoma county. this video was taken around 11:00 this morning in two rock west of petaluma, the first time in more than a decade a tornado's touched down in sonoma county. for most of us it was hit or miss showers. so this time lapse video shows a cell moving through oakland this morning, a dark cloud, well, then giving way to a beautiful rainbow and eventually blue skies. then just before we caught this rainbow on our sfo camera, there were reports of thunderstorms and lightning near the terminal. as we look live around the bay area, much different from last night's commute when the rain was really starting to pick up.
6:02 pm
you'll want to keep that umbrella handy the next few days as we check in with chief meteorologist paul heggen. let's take another look at that video of the tornado in sonoma county. paul, this is pretty rare. you posted that to the newsroom. we all were in shock. was this california? >> i had to check to make sure it was actual video, but the radar matches up. let's point out where we're talking about here in sonoma county. it's west of 101 which runs the length of the petaluma river valley in some of the higher valleys west of highway 101. it was a brief tornado touchdown, but it's exceptional because it's the first in sonoma county since 2011 and if i'm checking the records correctly, the first in any part of the bay area since 2011. let's look at what's on radar now. we'll zoom in at where the tornado occur canned. we have scattered showers at the moment, including some wetting down the roads for the tail end of the evening commute. zooming
6:03 pm
into that portion of sonoma county where the brief tornado did occur just southeast of two rock which is southwest of rohnert park, northwest of petaluma. we can look at what the radar looked like when the tornado touched down at 11:00 this morning. the red and green, we're in velocity mode on radar. you can see which way the raindrops are moving. we're looking at the red area where the raindrops are moving away from the radar site in davis and the green area where the raindrops are moving towards, the center of circulation. how did this happen today? the way the winds were aligned in the atmosphere, winds at surface level and winds farther up in the atmosphere moving two different speeds. that gets the air turning over horizontally. that's not rare. what's different today is we had showers that grew into thunderstorms. there was instability in the atmosphere around the bay area. as the thunderstorms grew, the updraft of the growing clouds takes the horizontal circulation and tilts it into a vertical
6:04 pm
circulation. as that vertical circulation gets more established and reaches down closer to ground level, first you get a funnel cloud. if it reaches all the way down to ground level, an actual tornado touches down briefly, only about 60 seconds or so. no concerns like that this evening. we'll track this moving forward into the weekend coming up. this was one of the big worries with the wind. a tree fell and took out a few forward lines near the border of mountain view and los altos. crews have been working to clearly the area for hours. as loureen ayyoub shows us, it was one of a few trees to come down and will likely not be the last. >> reporter: more wind, more rain and more trees falling down. we're here at keizer stadium where some trees went down causing damage to the fences here. it's a scene that has become all too common, trees coming down in san francisco and
6:05 pm
throughout the bay. this morning at the keizer stadium, former home of the 49ers, a eucalyptus tree split in half knocking down two cypress trees and damaged the main gate at the stadium. this local runner heard the sounds. >> it was not that unexpected. trees have come down here before. >> reporter: the tree also hit a lamp. so they've temporarily cut power on site until repairs are complete. rec and park says it's due to the tree's limb failure. cam, who is a big fan of the surrounding trees, still remains cautious around them. >> i generally try to spend as little time under large trees as i can. >> reporter: another tree fell at the border of los altos and mountain view, that affecting residents who had their power cut as officials repair the damage. one local neighbor is relieved for his safety. >> i'm glad i wasn't standing
6:06 pm
there when it fell, but the tree is huge. >> reporter: as large as it is, miraculously, no injuries reported. >> whenever you get saturation, there's always a higher risk. when you've got wind coming in, they can knock down those trees. >> reporter: at keizer stadium, no injuries reported, just another good-bye to some longstanding neighbors. >> it's kind of sad when they come down, too. >> reporter: an unavoidable cycle of life. officials are encouraging residents to try to stay away from trees during wet and windy conditions. >> thank you. flooding has also been a big issue. high waters from the russian river washed over highway 175 in hopland in mendocino county. the area is prone to flooding, but the river surged above flood stage overnight, quickly receded falling below its banks this morning, but it's still left a lot of damage. a nearby winery
6:07 pm
was impacted. you can see some grapevines just drenched in floodwaters. in sonoma county crews trudged through this flooded road to rescue a driver who was trapped in a car in the community of windsor. a look at road conditions in the sierra, few cars on the road. the uc berkeley snow lab says they got more than ten inches of snowfall overnight and heed this warning. they're expecting plenty more the next 48 hours, even more from sunday to monday. chain controls are in effect this evening along highway 50. we will track the remnants of this storm and the next atmospheric river coming. you can find first alert updates anytime on kpix.com or watch us free streaming on the cbs news app. a preliminary report is in on the release of coke dust by

the martinez refinery on thanksgiving 2022. an independent investigator revealed workers at the refinery weren't aware of this release until the next day when they started getting calls from people finding the dust on their yards, homes, and cars. the report listed several factors for the release and slow response, things like worker fatigue and the company ignoring warnings from their own engineers. we'll know more when the final reports are released the end of the month. san jose police caught four burglary suspects during a home invasion last week. they believe the group is connected to a string of burglaries that have taken place all across the bay area, including san jose, san bruno, fremont, milpitas, and union city. police say the suspects boosted jewelry, high end watches, purses, and firearms. after searching the suspects' homes, they found more than $100,000 in cash and stolen property. police say they also found a cache of

weapons. really liking this. we are less than ten days out from super bowl lviii. the 49ers will face off with the kansas city chiefs in las vegas right here on cbs, but they're getting some final work here at home. we're talking about workouts. matt lively is here with an update from practice today. >> they were back on the practice field, not like ripping out weeds from the backyard. about a two-hour practice and they got some main guys some rest, arik armstead, trent williams, george kittle. the game plan for the chiefs is being installed this week. there's one obvious discussion how on earth does the defense slow down chiefs pat mahomes and his favorite target, travis kelce? kyle shanahan is glad they have all this time before they really have to do it on february 11th. >> i know john lynch, they had
6:10 pm
to go like that monday after they won the nfc championship in philly. i couldn't imagine that. you try to get as much in this first week as possible. if you put stuff off till that week, you'll get to that thursday and friday and not feel as comfortable. >> it's a good thing they have this rest week. i was in that 9ers locker room sunday, a lot of champagne bottles, cigars smoked. the hangover effects last a few days. >> your hangover or theirs? >> theirs. >> just checking on you before you head to vegas. >> i don't know what you're talking about. stay with us for a story of a south bay 9ers fan who scheduled his life saving treatments around the team's road games. >> good morning. i'm currently in dialysis. >> how the 9ers winning season has helped lift his spirits through a health crisis. also, february marks the start of black history month. we'll take you live to our

atmospheric river behind us, another one on the way later this weekend. be careful with more chances of rain in between. paul is growing up, my parents wanted me to become a doctor or an engineer. those are good careers! but i chose a different path. first, as mayor and then in the legislature. i enshrined abortion rights in our california constitution. in the face of trump, i strengthened hate crime laws and lowered the costs for the middle class. now i'm running to bring the fight to congress. you were always stubborn. and on that note, i'm evan low, and i approve this message. in order for small businesses to thrive,

the atmospheric river that hit us is now causing flooding in southern california. multiple cars are trapped in rising floodwaters in long beach. everyone inside got out safely and unscathed. a tow truck arrived to the scene to pull the vehicles out of the water. as the skies clear at home, we've been spotting rainbows all over from our tower cameras. you've been sending photos in. one over the bay bridge this afternoon, another one from our san jose camera and our chopper caught one just a little over an hour ago near benicia. paul, we are not done with the rain just yet as you've been telling to us brace for more. >> yeah. tomorrow and saturday
6:18 pm
will be a lot like today where there will be dry breaks, some sunshine and also showers coming back through, more rainbow spotting weather over the next couple days. let's look at the big picture pattern. it's that area of low pressure, the center of this storm system, still spinning away off the pacific northwest coast. that directed the atmospheric river into the bay area yesterday and last night. that has shifted farther south and really soaked southern california this morning. there's still enough leftover energy spinning around that storm system to produce the scattered showers activity that we've dealt with throughout the day, a few thunderstorms popping up as well, just showers on the radar now as we look at the north bay, showers right over santa rosa and rohnert park, another shower just north of downtown napa. heavier rain is moving back into san francisco, the northern path at least pushing across the golden gate. that will continue moving over the bay bridge into oakland. there's more shower lining up farther offshore that will continue making its way through tonight and there's more rain moving into the santa cruz mountains. we'll see this off and on pattern not just tonight
6:19 pm
and into the first half of tomorrow, but it will keep repeating itself, little ripples kind of pinwheeling around the parent storm system squeezing out additional brief heavy downpours. while the showers are inconvenient for planning anything outdoors, they won't exacerbate the high water concerns we had last night. the last few raise of light on the horizon, temperatures in the low to mid-50s, 40s by early tomorrow morning with enough cloud cover even with breaks for temperatures to stay a few degrees above average. then despite the ongoing showers it's not going to be a complete washout tomorrow. put yellow paws on the forecast tomorrow. the hour-by-hour icons, the computers doing their best to guess exactly when the showers arrive, not that kind of pattern. it will be a random distribution of rain showers throughout the day. when one shower moves out, you'll likely get a little
6:20 pm
break before the next one. we'll look at that momentarily. let's look at our forecast high temperatures for tomorrow and come back to the next atmospheric river that hits the coast of california. temperatures will hit the upper 50s for the warm end of the spectrum tomorrow, a few degrees below average for the 2nd day of february in san jose, groundhog today tomorrow. the rodents will likely see their shadow and after that wet rodents. a degree or two below normal for early february, but we can handle it, similar story on the weekend with the scattered shower pattern saturday. that is what futurecast forecast models indicate as we head into the weekend, but then they really diverge sunday. that's when the next atmospheric river will be aiming towards us. let's look at them side by side. the american forecast model has consistently pointed to a wet, windy pattern for the bay area
6:21 pm
sunday with widespread heavy rain, lots of snow in the sierra and the center of the storm system close enough to squeeze the atmosphere and result in 30 to 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts. that's what the european forecast model said until about 12 hours ago. now it's shifted its forecast towards the central coast and southern california. still producing plenty of snow in the sierra and giving the bay area some rainfall, but exactly where this is going to set up will determine the specific impacts around the bay area. be prepared for rain and wind, very similar to yesterday, but there's still a chance the worst impacts miss us down to the south. it will be a mess in southern california and we're likely to get lingering shower activity monday and tuesday next week. we'll be here to keep you updated as we head through the next several days. it will be an active weather pattern. it's the specifics of the forecast the second half of the weekend that will occupy
6:22 pm
our attention. we're continually getting new ensembles of data where you run the same model over and over again to get a range of possibilities. at this point, outdoor plans discouraged sunday because of the rain and wind which could be very similar to yesterday, but there's still a chance the greatest impact will be a farther to our south. >> thank you so much. coming up, it is the story of a truly dedicated 9ers fan who put his own health at risk to follow the team on the road, how the two leading candidates for senate. two very different visions for california. steve garvey, the leading republican, is too conservative for california. he voted for trump twice and supported republicans for years, including far right conservatives. adam schiff, the leading democrat, defended democracy against trump and the insurrectionists. he helped build affordable housing, lower drug costs, and bring good jobs back home. the choice is clear.

we've heard from a lot of dedicated 49ers fans this season on the road for the super bowl, but we found one fan in the south bay who puts his health at risk to support the team and the 9ers winning season for him has been like therapy. >> reporter: the term die hard 49ers fan gets thrown around a lot, but few actually meet the literal definition the way san jose's bruce ventura does because when he's not sitting in the front row at levi's stadium or traveling to away games to support the 49ers, he's here in a kidney care center for life saving treatments. >> good morning. i'm currently in dialysis. i get up at 4:30 a.m. >> reporter: he does this three days a week. >> this is how i get my day
