a small plane crashes into a florida mobile home park. what went wrong. one down and one more to go. california drying out following the first of two powerful storms that's leaving homes and roads under water. i wish he would have killed us instead. >> on the stand. the mother of a school shooter testifies in her own defense saying she wouldn't have done anything differently. today she faces cross-examination . good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the breaking news overnight. several people were killed when a small plane crashed into a mobile home park in clearwater, florida. authorities say the single-engine plane hit one home killing several on the plane and one inside the home. it sparked a fire that also damaged other nearby homes. the faa says the pilot reported engine failure before the plane went down. >> we have report of an airplane

crash that was -- the location is now on fire. >> shocked neighbors described what it was like. >> i was screaming, call 911, call 911. i wanted to get everybody out, but the heat was horrible. >> it is sad, and i'm praying for the people that were involved. >> there's no word on the exact number of people killed or how many were on the plane. a federal investigation is under way to determine the cause of the crash. and now to that monster pacific storm, the first of two bringing torrents of rain to parts of california. this powerful system is now pushing through utah and arizona before the next atmospheric river arrives in california this weekend. that doesn't give the flooded out communities much time to dry out and clean up. cbs' carter evans reports from a heard-hit area. >> reporter: dramatic rescues today in southern california as floodwaters rushed in.

>> hey, they're coming -- >> reporter: a swift water rescue team saved this man trapped under a bridge in orange county. and in long beach, drivers needed help getting to dry land after their cars wound up submerged up to their roofs. this area south of los angeles received nearly a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. >> i've been living mere for like three years and never seen it like this. >> reporter: in l.a., winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour downed trees. and torrential downpours made for a dangerous morning commute. the storm slammed northern california first, knocking down trees and flooding streets along with nearby vineyard where up to three inches of rain fell. >> reporter: i'm elise preston in northern california's wine country. crews are keeping drivers away from floodwaters like here in sonoma county where the incessant storm washed out a road stranding a driver and forcing this overnight rescue.

across the area the pounding rain had nowhere to go. several wineries are under water today after the rushing river swelled and overflowed. >> reporter: back in southern california, at higher elevations, the powerful storm is good news for skiers. but with up to two feet of fresh powder expected in the mountains, this bald eagle is hunkered down in her nest keep her eggs warm. behind me workers are trying to pump out all this water now so police can reopen the road. another round of heavy rain is expected to hit on sunday, and that's right before the grammys which could make for a soggy red carpet. carter evans, cbs news, long beach. now to the trial of jennifer crumbley, the michigan mother whose son killed four students in 2021. today she's expected back on the stand to face cross-examination after testifying she didn't think her son needed mental health counseling despite a warning from the school the day of the deadly rampage.

cbs' jarred hill is joining us now from new york with details on the case and the testimony. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. jennifer crumbley said she wouldn't have done anything differently in the lead up to her son's shooting spree as that relationship and her choices as a parent sit at the heart of her manslaughter trial. 45-year-old jennifer crumbley took the stand. >> i wish he would have killed us instead. >> reporter: in what's believed to be the first trial of its kind. the mother of a school shooter charged with involuntary manslaughter after her then-15-year-old son ethan opened fire at oxford high school in michigan back in 2021 killing four students. prosecutors accuse jennifer and her husband james of ignoring major warning signs. school staff testified the parents were called to the school and urged to get ethan psychological help just hours before the shooting, but the crumbleys refused to take him home. jurors heard chilling entries from ethan's general one reading "i want help, but my parents don't listen to me."

>> did you ever believe that your son needed mental health treatment? >> no. i mean, there was a couple of times where ethan had expressed anxiety, but not to a level where i felt he needed to go see a psychiatrist or mental health professional right away. no. >> reporter: crumbley told the husband bought the gun that was used in the rampage and that he was responsible for safely storing it. >> i didn't feel comfortable being in charge of that. it was more his thing so i let him handle that. >> reporter: she broke down as prosecutors showed jurors surveillance footage from the deadly rampage. jennifer crumbley has pleaded not guilty. her trial continues today. so the father, james', trial starts in about a month. and talking big picture here. legal experts have said if either are convicted this could change the landscape of how prosecutions are conducted in shootings like this where the shooter is a minor. back to you. >> that's why this case is being

watched so closely. jarred hill in new york. thank you. well, a somber day today as the bodies of the three american service members killed overseas arrive home. the president and the first lady will join the grieving families at dover air force base for a dignified transfer to honor the three sergeants from georgia killed in sunday's drone strike in jordan. this as defense secretary lloyd austin addressed the u.s.' expected response to that attack in his first comment since being hospitalized last month. here's david martin. >> reporter: walking slowly and with a limp, defense secretary lloyd austin entered the pentagon briefing room to apologize for keeping his bout with prostate cancer secret even from president biden. >> i should have informed my boss. i did not. that was a mistake. and again, i apologize to him for not doing so. >> reporter: austin had been diagnosed with a cancer that

afflicts one in six black men. >> it was a gut punch, and frankly, my first instinct was to keep it private. >> reporter: and kept it private even after he was admitted to the icu with what he called highly, highly unusual complications from prostate surgery. >> i felt severe leg pain and pain in the abdomen and hip. i was also experiencing fever and chills and shallow breathing. >> reporter: a private medical % crisis which he now admits the public has a right to know about when it's the secretary of defense. >> taking this kind of job means losing some of the privacy that most of us expect. >> reporter: and which he is still recovering from. >> my leg will continue to improve. my pt specialist, who i think is a sadist, is -- he continues to work me hard. >> reporter: the military under his command is preparing to strike back for iranian-backed militia attacks which on sunday killed three american soldiers. austin said this time will be

different from the one-and-done retaliatory strikes the u.s. has conducted until now. >> i don't think the adversaries have a one-and-done mindset. and so they have a lot of capability, i have a lot more. >> reporter: the targets will be in iraq and syria, and the timing will depend on weather and intelligence. weather so pilots can have eyes on their targets, and intelligence so they can find the iranian operatives they're trying to kill. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. president biden issued an executive order targeting israeli settlers accused of attacking palestinians and israeli peace activists in the west bank. the order imposes financial sanctions and visa bans on four people for acts of violence and attempts to destroyed or seize palestinian property. officials say others were punished, as well. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu denounced the u.s. penalties. as for the fighting in gaza,

israel's defense minister says forces have just about wrapped up their combat mission in the southern city of khan younis, a hamas stronghold. israeli officials say hamas is running out of weapons and ammunition, and the war's next phase will move south toward the border with egypt. coming up, times square attack. what we are learning about the migrants accused of beating two officers. and pitching in, how the mlb is helping to replace a vandalized statue of a baseball great. this is the "cbs morning news." an update that vandalized statue of jackie robinson, and new details about an attack on a -- on new york city cops, rather. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "new york post" reports police believe four of the migrants arrested for allegedly attacking two officers near times square fled on a bus to california. surveillance video shows a group of asylum seekers punching and kicking the cops saturday as they were trying to disperse a crowd near a migrant center. seven were arrested, five released without bail. law enforcement sources say it's believed that four suspects gave fake names to a group that helps migrants get rides out of the city and hopped on a bus to california wednesday. the "sun sentinel" says a california teenager accused of swatting a florida mosque could be linked to hundreds of terror threats across the country. 17-year-old alan filion was extradited to florida this week to face charges as an adult. he's accused of making a fake threat of a mass shooting at a mosque last year. authorities believe he's also responsible for hundreds of false reports of active shooters

and bomb threats targeting high schools, houses of worship, historically black colleges, and government offices. and "the kansas city star" says major league baseball and all 30 teams will pay to replace a destroyed statue of jackie robinson. video shows two people cutting it down in the park last week. the only thing left was the statue's feet. burned remnants of the statue honoring the man who broke mlb's color barrier were discovered in a trash can at another nearby park tuesday. a gofundme campaign has raised more than $180,000 already. still to come, trademarking taylor swift. the name the pop star wants to register with the u.s. patent office. until, i saw how easily it picked up my hair every time i dried it! only takes a minute. look at that!

while the nation's unemployment rate is near a 50-year low, we've seen some recent and major layoffs in tech, finance, and media. new analysis from executive coaching from challenger, gray, and christmas shows america saw more than 82,000 job cuts last month alone. that is a 136% increase since december. you may notice some of your favorite tunes are no longer on tiktok. universal music group has pulled its music from the social media platform after the two sides failed to reach a new licensing agreement. the music giant released songs by artists like taylor swift, drake, and ariana grande. in an open letter it accused tiktok of offering unsatisfactory payment from music and allowing the platform to be flooded with ai recordings.
