a small plane crashes into a florida mobile home park. what went wrong. one down and one more to go. california drying out following the first of two powerful storms that's leaving homes and roads under water. i wish he would have killed us instead. >> on the stand. the mother of a school shooter testifies in her own defense saying she wouldn't have done anything differently. today she faces cross-examination . good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the breaking news overnight. several people were killed when a small plane crashed into a mobile home park in clearwater, florida. authorities say the single-engine plane hit one home killing several on the plane and one inside the home. it sparked a fire that also damaged other nearby homes. the faa says the pilot reported engine failure before the plane went down. >> we have report of an airplane

crash that was -- the location is now on fire. >> shocked neighbors described what it was like. >> i was screaming, call 911, call 911. i wanted to get everybody out, but the heat was horrible. >> it is sad, and i'm praying for the people that were involved. >> there's no word on the exact number of people killed or how many were on the plane. a federal investigation is under way to determine the cause of the crash. and now to that monster pacific storm, the first of two bringing torrents of rain to parts of california. this powerful system is now pushing through utah and arizona before the next atmospheric river arrives in california this weekend. that doesn't give the flooded out communities much time to dry out and clean up. cbs' carter evans reports from a heard-hit area. >> reporter: dramatic rescues today in southern california as floodwaters rushed in.

>> hey, they're coming -- >> reporter: a swift water rescue team saved this man trapped under a bridge in orange county. and in long beach, drivers needed help getting to dry land after their cars wound up submerged up to their roofs. this area south of los angeles received nearly a month's worth of rain in just 12 hours. >> i've been living mere for like three years and never seen it like this. >> reporter: in l.a., winds gusting up to 45 miles per hour downed trees. and torrential downpours made for a dangerous morning commute. the storm slammed northern california first, knocking down trees and flooding streets along with nearby vineyard where up to three inches of rain fell. >> reporter: i'm elise preston in northern california's wine country. crews are keeping drivers away from floodwaters like here in sonoma county where the incessant storm washed out a road stranding a driver and forcing this overnight rescue.

across the area the pounding rain had nowhere to go. several wineries are under water today after the rushing river swelled and overflowed. >> reporter: back in southern california, at higher elevations, the powerful storm is good news for skiers. but with up to two feet of fresh powder expected in the mountains, this bald eagle is hunkered down in her nest keep her eggs warm. behind me workers are trying to pump out all this water now so police can reopen the road. another round of heavy rain is expected to hit on sunday, and that's right before the grammys which could make for a soggy red carpet. carter evans, cbs news, long beach. now to the trial of jennifer crumbley, the michigan mother whose son killed four students in 2021. today she's expected back on the stand to face cross-examination after testifying she didn't think her son needed mental health counseling despite a warning from the school the day of the deadly rampage.

cbs' jarred hill is joining us now from new york with details on the case and the testimony. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. jennifer crumbley said she wouldn't have done anything differently in the lead up to her son's shooting spree as that relationship and her choices as a parent sit at the heart of her manslaughter trial. 45-year-old jennifer crumbley took the stand. >> i wish he would have killed us instead. >> reporter: in what's believed to be the first trial of its kind. the mother of a school shooter charged with involuntary manslaughter after her then-15-year-old son ethan opened fire at oxford high school in michigan back in 2021 killing four students. prosecutors accuse jennifer and her husband james of ignoring major warning signs. school staff testified the parents were called to the school and urged to get ethan psychological help just hours before the shooting, but the crumbleys refused to take him home. jurors heard chilling entries from ethan's general one reading "i want help, but my parents don't listen to me."

>> did you ever believe that your son needed mental health treatment? >> no. i mean, there was a couple of times where ethan had expressed anxiety, but not to a level where i felt he needed to go see a psychiatrist or mental health professional right away. no. >> reporter: crumbley told the husband bought the gun that was used in the rampage and that he was responsible for safely storing it. >> i didn't feel comfortable being in charge of that. it was more his thing so i let him handle that. >> reporter: she broke down as prosecutors showed jurors surveillance footage from the deadly rampage. jennifer crumbley has pleaded not guilty. her trial continues today. so the father, james', trial starts in about a month. and talking big picture here. legal experts have said if either are convicted this could change the landscape of how prosecutions are conducted in shootings like this where the shooter is a minor. back to you. >> that's why this case is being
