home of super bowl lviii between the 49ers and the chiefs. this is kpix , cbs news bay area. breaking news. the u.s. military begins airstrikes against the targets in the middle east. the act of retaliation that is raising the question if we are headed toward a war. another an atmospheric river is making a beeline for the bay area. we are tracking the storm. the 49ers hit the practice field again before heading to vegas tomorrow. they are breaking out of their comfort zone to prepare for the super bowl. as we know, the rain is coming and going today, at least for now but it is all leading to another atmospheric river this weekend. taking a live look at the conditions outside, we have had spotty

showers across the bay area. you can see how it is coming down in patches with brief breaks in between. the real focus today is the weekend when a much stronger system is expected to hit. first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen is tracking the storm from our virtual view studio. >> these storms hit back-to-back. we had the atmospheric river a few days ago and another one working through saturday into sunday. there are a few spotty showers out there. as we head into the weekend, showers will continue into most of the day tomorrow but the next atmospheric river will arrive saturday night into sunday. in that timeframe, flooding and wind damage are going to be possible. there are high wind warnings for parts of the bay area. the unsettled weather pattern will continue into next week. it should be tapering off into showers by

sunday night. right now, let's take a look at the atmospheric river scale which you are seeing on the coast. it is mostly beneficial for the bay area but can bring some hazards. because it is happening on the heels of another similar atmospheric river, everything slides up a category. it will be a balance of beneficial rainfall and hazards with wind damage and the potentials of flooding. here is what is happening on first alert doppler. scattered showers, thunder storms through the central valley. just intermittent shower activity for much of the day tomorrow. those showers are coming out through we head through the next 24 hours. as we wind the clock forward on saturday, another batch of showers mid day. the heavier rain is going to be moving in right around news time. darren will be tracking that on saturday and that will continue to fall on saturated ground. we will be

live at 6:00 with updates on sunday on cbs news bay area and we will be seeing more rain falling throughout the day on sunday. how much rain are we talking about? through 10:00 a.m. on sunday, the northbay will not see as much on a widespread basis as it did with the last storm system. a lot of the moisture gets squeezed out of the santa cruz mountains but we will be looking at a half inch to over an inch and a half through san rafael. the rain will continue several hours after that. over 3 inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains and more will fall as that system sends more moisture through us. the wind energy is going to be significant. not a breezy day tomorrow. the winds will start tomorrow and they will accelerate. some 40+ miles per hour winds before the sun comes up. look at these numbers by 10:00 a.m. on sunday. we will see much

stronger winds. the center of it will be closer, squeezing the atmosphere to a greater extent on a widespread basis. it will be capable of doing some significant damage to trees, power lines , moving trucks around those wet roads as well. in the sierra, this will be a big snow maker. 2 to 4 feet of snow will pick up accumulation. the highest peaks, 5 to 6 feet of the total snow. travel will be almost impossible in 60 and 80. as we head through that timeframe, the action day will be late tomorrow and then into sunday and then we taper things off to shower by monday and tuesday. according to the latest forecast model projections, we will cross our fingers that we can get one dry day but then light showers return to the forecast for the first full

week of february. all eyes on that next storm system which will bring statewide impacts. we will talk about that, coming up at 5:00. people in san francisco took advantage of the brief blue skies to pick up sandbags for the next round of rain moving in. any resident or business in san francisco can get up to 10 free sandbags in the department of public works. you just have to bring proof of your address. the storm really slammed southern california. they got ends the entire month's worth of rain in a few hours. some people were trapped in their cars on flooded roadways. rescue crews flew out, or paddled out, to save them. >> the city's pumping station, which we rely heavily on here, did not function, clearing out this side of the street. this is not a new problem. it persists and persists. >> after l.a., the storm continues south to san diego. the flooding was so bad that city officials issued evacuation orders are some communities. those orders were

retaliatory airstrikes on iranian backed targets in iraq and syria. that is in response to a drone strike that killed three u.s. servicemembers in jordan over the weekend. officials say the strikes have hit iran with targets at about half a dozen locations. the administration has blamed the deadly drone strike on militia groups supported by iran. earlier, president biden and defense secretary lloyd austin were among those who attended a ceremony marking the return of the fallen service members' remains to the u.s. their deaths are the first to come and a rising tide of middle east hostility set off by the october 7 hamas attack on israel. berkeley city politics in turmoil after ray's second councilmember abruptly resigned from office. kate harrison made the announcement during tuesday's council meeting. she says her decision is in response to a broken political process at city hall. this comes just weeks after another berkeley city councilmember ,

rigel robinson, resigned as well. two people are injured following a house fire in the east bay last night. contra costa county firefighters rescued four people from a burning home in pacheco. the home was severely damaged and fire officials say two of those victims suffered serious burns and have them sent to a hospital. a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hit in the pacific this afternoon. it was three miles west of the san francisco zoo and it was felt up and down the peninsula. no reports of any damage or injuries. san francisco fire tweeted out shortly that they were aware of it and no reports of any damage or injuries. the job market continues to defy expectations, the newest report shows the u.s. economy added more than 350,000 jobs just last month. that is more than double what economists expected. the unemployment rate remains about 3.7%, which is close to a 50 year low. wages are also up, just slightly, but despite that, according to the

newest pew research poll, a quarter of americans have a negative view of the economy overall and part of that could be despite the gains industries across the country continue having. u.s. companies slashed more than 82,000 jobs last month. it is a 136% increase over december. the financial companies have been seeing the most layoffs followed by the tech sector . joining me now to try to make sense of all of this is former edd director michael bernick. a lot of things are at play here. the economy is doing great. more people are working than ever before and they are making more money but the next headline is mass layoffs. make sense of this for us. >> today's numbers are very, very strong. we are well beyond the expectation across sectors. we do have layoffs in the bay

area. again, they are a very small part of the labor market. california has over 19 million payroll jobs. layoffs of 500, 1000, 1500, those are major things for the people involved. in terms of the overall labor market, very serious. >> we talked about the financial sector having some issues there but what department is doing the best? what is the best place to try to look for a job? >> healthcare continues to be the big gainer. it has been for the past three to five years. this morning, healthcare gained 70,000 jobs. always a big gainer. the other big gainer is were across sectors. this is in professional services, which has not done very well.

manufacturing, we are always hearing manufacturing. that gained another 23,000 jobs. retail gained jobs. the job growth is across sectors. healthcare this strong , a diversity of job growth. >> what category is struggling to find workers? i am walking down san francisco city streets and almost every sign has a help wanted sign. >> leisure and hospitality continue to look for workers. it is really true. even in healthcare, certified nurse assistants, people who do the real work in the long-term care home , long-term care facility owners will tell you their struggles to find workers. retail, as you say, the restaurant. the variety of these jobs, within the social services, the direct support nationals, independent living coaches, job coaches, they are not having trouble finding jobs. again, a number of

entry-level jobs, employers, especially the tight labor market. >> why do you think that is? are there other jobs available that are a little bit more attractive than some of those other jobs? >> exactly. >> we have also seen during the pandemic, the exodus of workers and some of the lower wage jobs, restaurants in particular but also, retail and long-term care facility leaving the areas just given the high cost of living here. >> one last question. if you are currently at your job, do you have advice for folks that may be hoping for a raise this year? any strategies for that? >> wages, as you say, have gone up surprisingly strong this morning. 4.5% year-over-year. that is above the 9.3% that we saw in 2022 but it is still a very strong

wage gain. the wage gain numbers are very strong, even above the inflation rate of 2.4%. there are still a lot of job openings in terms of looking for other jobs. the number of openings has slowed down in the past three months. >> overall, a good start to 2024? >> very strong. >> hope lee it continues. still ahead, the niners hitting the presley's -- the practice field today. an unlikely player is stepping up and taking charge ahead of the game. a lot of bay area businesses are excited to host niners

as we kick off black history month, san francisco mayor london breed is hoping

that historically black colleges and universities can play a key role in bringing people back downtown. the black san francisco initiative, as it is being called, will start hosting the hbcu programs at san francisco state this summer. the ultimate goal is to establish a satellite campus here in the city. city officials hope they can hope -- work with colleges to utilize some of those vacant buildings downtown. >> ucsf, university of san francisco and san francisco state, they have all raised their hand and said we want to be a part of this and we want to bridge this gap. what better way to do that than working with these historical institutions? >> mayor london breed is in conversation with howard and tuskegee universities to set up satellite campuses in the city. of the 107 hbcus in america, none are on the west coast. the oakland museum of california is hosting its

annual rummage sale this week. this massive warehouse in the fruitvale district is filled with used clothes , kitchen, household essentials, electronics and everything in between. organizers say it is the largest and oldest rummage sale in the state. they say hidden gems are all over the place and the only way to find them is to come down. >> they are treasures. they don't cost near as much as they do if you bought them in the store. we know people who plan their vacation to come to california, see relatives, to come to this sale. >> i bet you can find some real treasures. proceeds from the sale go to support the oakland museum for the next month. usually it is the winter holiday season that is associated with giving to charity. coming up, how a local group uses valentine's day to spread food and love to whoever needs it. you can watch us anytime, anywhere on our streaming
